One point that may be obvious but bears emphasizing is the fact the Cavs currently have Love and have his Bird rights and that's a nice asset. Windhorst recently said that 6 or 7 teams would be willing to offer Love a max contract. Maybe some saw this as bad news -- in that it means there is more competition for his services -- but I saw it differently. To me this means that Love will have multiple options, if he is for whatever reason hell-bent on getting out of Cleveland. This will also mean the teams interested in him may feel compelled to offer the full 5 year max contract via a sign and trade. This would give the Cavs a chance to get something for Love.
One idea is getting Jordan Hill ($9M team option for next year) and maybe a smaller piece like Wesley Johnson or Tarik Black, both of whom will be FA and could be included in a sign and trade. I'm sure there are better ideas.
If Love has his heart set on playing for the Lakers, and doesn't care about the 5th year and the full max contract, then of course he is free just to sign with the Lakers outright, but I can't imagine why he wouldn't want to maximize what he can get and why the Lakers wouldn't be willing to pay him.
And if he simply wants a one year deal to take advantage of the expanding cap in 2016, well, I don't know, but it seems unlikely he signs this type of contract with a team other than Cleveland. I know that LeBron did, but he's sort of unique.
The other tool to replace Love is the Haywood contract. The obvious option is a straight up deal of Haywood for David Lee (Cavs would have to add a small salary), since Golden St will presumably be motivated to clear money to re-sign Draymond.
Larger point though is that I agree the Cavs should be wary about spending money just because Gilbert can afford it.
