Summer League Game 1, Cavs vs. Bucks, 6pm, July 9

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Best thing about Felders game today:

Playing first game in months with a bunch of shot hungry guys you've just met: 0 turnovers while moving at a lightning pace

Felder looked excellent today. He had 5 or 6 assists with 0 turnovers. Caused some turnovers on defense. Nobody could stay in front of him.

His jump shot will be something to watch. It didn't look good today. I'm not a fan of his mechanics. It isn't pure trash, but I prefer one motion shots and he puts the ball a little behind his head.

@The Human Q-Tip Did you disagree with my assessment? Or was that a slip of the finger?

You aren't usually one to hit the disagree, so I thought i'd ask.

That was an ugly offensive game. Jordan could only make 3s and the entire team shot 21% on 28 3 point attempts. I did like some aspects of Felder tonight though, he seemed to have a few nice passes and handle the ball pretty well.

To be fair, they shouldn't get too excited, because he is probably 35 and nearing retirement

Judging McRae as a bust and Felder as a superstar based on Summer League is idiotic. This game showed me nothing I didn't already know.

Yes, when McRae is in ISO he gets sloppy and turns the ball over. Good news for us, if McRae is going ISO in a real game something will be very wrong or very right. He was asked to run backup point guard duties with Felder and Pointer as the guys he can kick out to, with us it'll be that LeBron dude who has some potential. During the regular season, for us, he'll need to read the defense to start a play and hit open shots, both things he did well last night.

Yes, Felder is fast as shit and is a good passer. Evaluating his defense based on one summer league game is ridiculous. Evaluating his shooting is better, and thus more problematic, because he was missing open shots. He didn't show me anything last night to suggest he plays a Norris Cole-like role for us this season.

Most impressive to me was Pointer, who showed that he had worked on his offense while still improving defensively, still though, not sure we can properly evaluate him going up against SL-players.

Here's the best I got:

There were at most, 5 guys I was paying attention to when they were on court:
  1. Kay Felder (#20)
  2. Jordan McRae (#12)
  3. Sir'Dominic Pointer (#15)
  4. DeAndre Liggins (#28)
  5. Michael Stockton (#10)
The last two (Liggins/Stockton) are laughable, I put them here because one has NBA roots to his dad while the other has more experience in the D-League than everyone else here.

But I do like Felder's game. Nothing to add, except he won't replace Delly's role on the team. But what if he developed so well that his game resembled Isaiah Thomas? Other than that, I look forward to seeing more of him.

McRae somewhat disappointed me, but isn't this the case with most shooters/chuckers? If he manages to carve a role out on our team, he should focus on the shot. It didn't look like he could dribble to the left effectively, so that limits his ability to create. If he could become an effective bench-spark plug (poor-man's Jamal Crawford?)...

And then there was Pointer. He's not going to be a stat-stuffer. And even if he could hit ONE shot, the coaching staff has recognized his lack of production on offense. And basically had to do the offense-for-defense switch at the end so the team could possibly win. I don't like his chances for making the team. But he didn't look TOO lost. He could be decent defensively... But we still own his rights (I think). Give him some more time???

Perhaps I led the Mcrae criticism early in the game. The reason I brought up his turnovers is because I saw a lot of praise for him in the thread without noticing his bad habit. Yes, he does a lot very well. His frame could add more muscle, but defensively he played well. He passed from a standstill very accurately. We know he has three point range even if it wasn't connecting in this game. I believe he has to screw up badly to not make the team this season. He didn't do that yet.

But when you watch a Summer League game, it's smart to find something for the young player to work on. Last year with Pointer, it was clear he needed to work on his jump shot. This year, it has looked improved. For Mcrae, I want to see him find open players while dribbling. The turnovers showed me he is still a work in progress in this regard. I compare his play at point to the year John Lucas put Darius Miles to point guard. No, that isn't the long term plan, but it forced the wing player to improve on his biggest weakness.

Now you guys are looking at the same things the coaches are looking at with Mcrae this summer. Let's see if he makes the jump.

Man I was really excited to watch Putney. He was disappointing.
