Summer League Game 1 - Cavs vs. Lakers - Friday, July 12, 2013, 8:00pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I missed the game last night, but I still don't understand how so many people put significant stock into pointless summer league games.

What I don't get is why so many people who say they don't care about summer league games put so much effort into complaining about how pointless summer league games are. If you don't like summer league games, just skip this thread.

What if we like watching them but fully acknowledge the fact that they are mostly meaningless, at least statistically? :)

I'm obsessed with the Cavs and love watching them play, even if the games don't mean anything. I went to the word church basketball league on Monday and saw Tristan Thompson play ONLY shooting with his right hand (even long jump shots, and his righty shot looks better than his lefty shot for what it's worth). I'm not putting any effort into complaining about how pointless the games are, I think the league is a great way to help young guys transition into the league, but I'm tired of hearing everyone complain after one poor shooting performance from Dion. Let's face it, Dion can average 30 points or Dion can average 5 points in the Summer League and it would have no impact on how he performs during the regular season, but it's still fun to watch regardless.

I bet a lot of RCF posters would be really interested if you would post some more comments about this in the Tristan thread. Very interesting (and Kyrie said something about it on the Summer League broadcast). Like, did he make any of them?

Thing about Dion Waiters is, I'm just looking for improvements in his game. In his release, his quickness, his ability to defend, etc.

Stats in the summer league definitely don't matter, but the way the player is playing for sure does.

Usually what they do in summer league is have a set of guys play off the bench one game, then another the next game. My guess is you'll see those 2 playing a lot of minutes next game.

Also Goulding had to wait for Fiba Clearance, which only came in an hour before the game, so they decided to sit him till next game.

What Im looking for with Dion is a player who can play off ball as well as he attacks with the ball, more. A guy who defends and gives you more on that end even when the offense is not going his way.

I saw a concerted effort from him in that first game to shoot shots coming off screens without putting the ball on the floor in order to create rhythm shots for himself. He looked like he had dead legs, would have been more encouraging if he adjusted to his dead legs and not hoisted as much as he was. Him hoisting when his shot wasnt falling is the kind of thing that concerns me and continues to lead to me seeing him as more Ben Gordon or Flip Murray than potential all star 2 guard.

I dont care WHAT his stats are in summerleague, never care about preseason or summer league stats in any regard. I DO care about his games development.

I saw no development on defense and that concerns me. If the season started right now, after seeing how these two players approached the game, I can tell you that Mike Brown would rather have a guard like Felix and how he plays active with length in his defensive backcourt than a guy like Dion, who even tonight was doing way too much watching off the ball defensively and was not moving well when guarding on the ball. Even though a guy like Delladova has nowhere near the same amount of quickness as Dion, I saw more effort, awareness and energy by Delladova when he didnt have the ball in his hands and thats the kind of thing Dion needs to work on.

It concerns me knowing that offensively, Dion needs to patch so many holes in his approach to playing off the ball, because I know FOR SURE both from his interview and from everything he has ever done, that Mike Brown will make defense his developmental priority with Dion and his game.

Get out of the gym with the fat dude who "hacks". Everything they show in those videos are ball handling and on the ball related developmental drills. Not impressed with that for him. Shouldnt be his focus this offseason.

Work on defensive technique and commit to improving your effort and energy on defense and without the ball in your hands on offense.
