Summer League Game 1 - Cavs vs. Lakers - Friday, July 12, 2013, 8:00pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Drummond is not on the damn team. Andrew Bynum is. Dion Waiters is. Sick of reading about guys we don't have and can't get.

Anyone know why KJones and Goulding were DNP's tonight?

Zeller played alright, and whoever J. Taylor is looked pretty solid too.

Usually what they do in summer league is have a set of guys play off the bench one game, then another the next game. My guess is you'll see those 2 playing a lot of minutes next game.

While our offense for 2 1/2 quarters shown no light at the end of the tunnel, didn't anyone realize that the young ones were utilizing a bit of Brown's old defense? The way we executed it wasn't perfect, but you can tell we could very well double the win total alone since we have smarter guys here now.

There were 3 or 4 defensive possessions towards the end where I just smiled...Zeller showing very hard on pick and rolls, Dion and Zeller trapping the ball handler on a screen...old Mikey B concepts that we haven't seen for a couple years under that bum Byron.

So Dellavadova looked better than Quinn, no? I gotta tell ya, in however many games I've watched Quinn since last year, I'm not sure what single NBA skill he has.

Still, if we get down to needing to play the 3 string PG, I'd rather just play Waiters instead. He was pretty much the only guy on the team that could make a difficult pass out there.

So you got to see Dellavedova and what he is about: coach on the floor, great communication, tough, solid distributor off the pick and roll. He seemed to struggle a little with adjusting to quicker defenders but I think that will get better. Be didn't look to score at all and nobody looked for him as an outside shooter. Once he acclimates, I think he will be a good floor spacer as well as everything you saw today. Solid option as 3rd point guard.

He certainly looked like he had NBA potential, unlike Quinn. I can't figure out how Quinn has hung around the league this long.

EDIT: And on Drummond, I'm really tired of reading about it. Would I rather have Drummond than Waiters, knowing what I know now? Yea. Didn't feel that way on draft night, though, when I was sure Drummond was going to bust. And guess what, the 6 other GMs that passed on Drummond to take someone else, including New Orleans, probably wishes they had taken him as well. That's life. He had huge bust potential so people avoided him. That said, I shouldn't have to be arguing about this stuff in summer league. If you don't know what you're watching for, then just leave it alone. Waiters played very solid team defense and passed the ball extremely well.

With all this talk about Felix is making someone that missed the game very hungry to see his plays alone.

I liked what I saw from Dellavedova aside from about a two minute stretch. Like the way he plays and runs the P&R, didn't really get a feel for his range but imagine it's decent enough with the form on the shot.

I think he is a very solid 3rd guard option if he takes care of the ball a little more, but some of that is due to the lack of talent in summer league. I think if he proves he can take care of the ball (5 assists to 4 turnovers tonight) I think he might stick as the 15th guy or be this year's verison of Kevin Jones splitting time between the D-League and Cavs

I thought if others made their jump shots, both Waiters and Dellavedova would have pushed 8 assists.

Was fine with the game other than the first quarter, which was just an ugly period of basketball that should be forgotten as soon as possible. I knew Dion was in for a rough night when he bricked off the front-iron of the rim on his first two free throws less than 5 minutes into the game. Lets me know that he did not have his legs under him and must be pretty tired, which means he's either been working really hard this off-season, or not nearly enough, I hope for the former. Really like what I saw out of Felix and Dellavadova, and while Taylor had a good night, I like the shooting forms of Higgins and Harper better.

Obviously, Chris Quin is hot garbage and should be treated as such.

Nobody else really stood out in my opinion. Hopefully the all-around shooting improves as the young guys settle in and relax.

I would think Dellevadova gets the start next game. Chris Quinn just really looked like he had no business on an NBA Summer League court.

plus he so strange looking that he makes me look normal

I missed the game last night, but I still don't understand how so many people put significant stock into pointless summer league games. There are a ton of fringe guys who go out there and just try to get it for themselves while many proven players just try to work on different aspects of their game. Off the top of my head I can recall that Markieff Morris dominated last year, Tristan and Dion sucked last year, and Jerryd Bayless averaged ~30 his rookie year. The list can go on and on, but bottom line is there is absolutely no obvious pattern for summer league performance vs. regular season performance.

And this sudden talk about preferring Drummond over Waiters is ridiculous. All because he had a few dominant summer league performances against guys 50 pounds lighter than him? With that logic, maybe we should also take Austin Rivers over Waiters, I saw he had a pretty good summer league game yesterday too...
