Super Bowl LVI - Ohio vs Odell

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm curious about something -- why do you think Mahomes' performance this year hasn't been as good as in his prior years? Did he just somehow become a worse quarterback?
My (very)simplistic uneducated guess is that teams are playing more cover 2 against the Chiefs than in years past. I think Mahomes is used to getting away with doing whatever he wants, so he doesn't always take what the defense gives him. I would imagine a subpar offensive line is culpable as well, the more Mahomes has to freelance, the more opportunity there is for him to make ill-advised throws(I can think of at least 3 interceptions that have come from him trying to hero ball it whereas someone without his talent likely just throws it away) and having to rush fewer guys obviously leaves more guys in coverage. I also don't think their average running game does anything to help open up up their passing game, or at least the big chunk yardage portion of it. They obviously have some stuff to figure out, which they probably will, he's too good of a QB not to, but the problems aren't all on Mahomes

I will add with Mahomes performance yesterday.

The line eventually broke down, but something I found super interesting is rather than getting best deep, Tennessee worked to eliminate short throws.

And it’s something I hadn’t really thought about. If you focus on doubling Kelce, and all other focus goes to covering the short passing game… They become very beatable.

If the safety plays glorified off man on Hill, and you keep the short stuff tight, Mahomes has to force the ball a bit more than normal, and you’re no longer guessing and caught on your heels. It was really interesting to see him double clutch so much because the flat was completely gone.

Yeah, we devoted a ton of coverage to Hill and he still beat us over the top. All the attention we were directing at Hill just made it easier for Kelce to roast us underneath. If you take away the short passing game, then you put all the onus on KC's shoddy line to hold up all game and give Mahomes time to get the ball downfield.

Yeah, if you don't have confidence in your line, and the short throws aren't there...that's bad news. Mahomes has been blessed not only with tremendous ability, but with both a great deep threat in Hill, and a great underneath threat with Kelce. But the line play weakens the threat posed by Hill, and that makes them more vulnerable.

I suggested that we do this and I was told that it was not the right strategy

Regarding the :doh (1): @SuperSurge....

I'm not claiming Baker is as good as Mahomes. I'm simply saying the recognition that Mahomes' play has been adversely affected by the state of his OL is a consideration that applies equally to Baker. Dude set a completion record through two games until he lost Wills and Landry, and then later Conklin got added to that list. When those things are brought up in the context of Baker, the reaction is sometimes "those are just excuses for his inconsistency". But it can't be both ways, where a crappy line is a legit explanation for Mahomes but not for Baker.
Lawyers gonna lawyer

Browns need to keep an eye on this...

His original list was the Bears, Cowboys, Saints, Raiders and Jets, wasn't it? Bears, Cowboys and Jets have significant resources in their QB. I can't imagine the Raiders moving on from Carr now. Do the Saints have thr ability to maneuver to get him?

If he asks out, the Browns better get on the phone.

I am a Baker loyalist, but Russ is the one available qb I'd unload some assets for.

If the Jets let Zach Wilson stop them from getting Russell Wilson theyre even bigger clowns than I thought

and I already thought they were huge clowns

same with Fields and the Bears. You don’t pass on Russell Wilson for these guys who honestly have shown they are pretty likely to not be FQBs already. They’ve been that bad

Spending the #2 overall pick on a guy and spending several 1st round picks on another guy, less than a year before, tends to buy those guys some time; especially at QB. Both those teams passed on Russ last year. I'd be shocked if either did a 180.

same here. If russ is available and open to come to cleveland, i would probably send 3 first round picks and Baker (still on rookie contract). If Browns have to take an big cap hit to trade Baker the number of picks I am willing to send goes down.

If the browns could pick up Russel on this contract he would only be a cap hit for the browns at 20 million for each of the next 2 years. That would be absolutely huge.

Making 1 mistake doesn’t excuse making 2

I get what you’re saying, but it’s never too early to correct a bad plan
