Teen HS Football Player Dies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A 17-year-old Harrison High School football player who died shortly after collapsing during a game had a heart condition, El Paso County Deputy Coroner Dawn Miller said Saturday.

Fermin Vialpando collapsed during the third quarter and died on the field Friday night, Miller said in a telephone interview. She said he had a heart condition but further testing would be needed to determine the exact cause of death.

The teen's mother, Sundae Vialpando, told The Denver Post her son had no known health problems. "Doctors said sometimes with an athlete -- it puts a strain on their heart," she said.

This makes me absolutely sick, you hate to see anyone die but especially a highschool student with so much life ahead of them. Terrible..

I got a scare this year, I failed my physical because the doctor thought I had a heart murmor, or however you spell it.

I had to go get further testing, an echo done on my heart and a visit to my personal doctor just before I was cleared to play..

Ive always been scared of that, I had a friend in HS who died during a football game because of a heart problem and just a week after that a player in the Toledo area died from the same thing.

Our entire HS is now filled with defibulators, which would have saved both players lives if they were on the spot.

A lot of heart problems with kids our age go unnoticed because everyone assumes we're young so we don't have those type of problems.

jeez this is real sad, so unnessecary, the way some of these coaches work kids can really take a toll on someone young, stress to perform added on with the normal presusres a kid has in high school can just overwhelm to this point.

I totally agree on what your saying, so much pressure on a teenager to succeed and this is what happens, first a HS BBall player and now a Football player? Just in shock.
