The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Without getting into a long explanation of my opinion...

Reyes is, in my estimate, gonna be a monster....starting now.

His ability to consistently hit a ball hard to all fields is almost unmatched.

His makeup is off the charts. He will be a big fan and team mate favorite.

We just might consider Reyes quite special before this is all over. I was at the game in Tempe where he popped out 2 homers, and those were hit very, very far. (He flexed as he went around 3B and Rendon was not pleased)
I have glanced at 2 different season simulators that have been going on. Both had him tearing the cover off the ball.

It's all BS though, since Clevinger was the leading CY candidate in the one, and had like a 5.xx ERA in the other.

His elbow has to feel about 80 years old

Don’t hear much talk from baseball players about how their bodies feel post-career. Football players are starting to talk and it aint good and some basketball players have pointed out the toll.

I’m curious what it’s like for baseball players in general, esp pitchers. Gotta be the best of the major sports right? But some pitchers have to be a mess...

Mercado hit 19 dingers last year over 145 total games and stole 29 bases. That's pretty fair production and fits an upward offensive trend. Couple that with above average defense in center, and he looks like a decent bet in the middle of our outfield.

The downside is that he was not good in the corners, and one rookie season does not ensure much of anything. I wish Tito would stick him in center, and let Deshields do the utility bit.

Still, Mercado is likely solid.

Everything about a Luplow/Naquin platoon indicates plus production and above average defense in one corner.

Which leaves one OF spot to be managed by Tito. Deshields-Reyes-Santana-Allen-Zimmer ought to be able to combine to decently fill one spot.

My guess would be Reyes and Santana are always in the starting in the lineup (if bats are producing), while Allen/DeShields come in to pinch run or be defensive replacements in most games.

Mercado also never played any OF until a couple seasons ago and he was switching from SS, which CF is usually an easier transition for an athlete to learn. My guess is the more he plays out there the better he will get, but will always be better at CF than at the other positions

To me Reyes has the possibility to be a HR leader and to me reminds me of a Nelson Cruz at the end of the day. Cruz could get to 500 HRs in due time if he stays healthy.

Yep the major problem is Mercado is terrible in the corner spots and that looks to be where he is going to have to play a considerable amount of innings, if you believe that Deshields is going to log much time. My friends and I half jokingly called Mercado "The Butcher" last year because of a few of his questionable defensive decisions in the outfield.

His CF metrics look better than I expected though, so that's a mini-win.

The most common ailments are sore knees, mouth cancer, diabetes and white privilege.

Speaking of Reyes, it's his birthday today and he is in isolation from the team as he attended a July 4th party and needs tested for Covid as a precaution.

It's obviously hard to predict a 60 game season like this, but the White Sox, in my opinion, are less threatening in a condensed season.

With young position players and young pitchers (especially) with no/limited major league experience, they seemed like a team who could be dangerous in the 2nd half of 162 once their players got their footing. Eloy Jimenez was a league average hitter for most of the season and then appeared to really break out of his shell in the final 2 months.
Exactly and I think the Indians, with their very established lineup and rotation will benefit.

I am of a different mind about the Chisox.

As is the case in any baseball matchup, the fewer the number of games, the better it is for the underdog.

I like our team, but just about anything could happen over the short season. That reality acknowledged, I'd rather have our team than any other in the division. I'm not sure I can say that yet about all the teams in the NL Central, as I have to give the Cards and Brewers a better look, but I'm feeling good if they can stay on the field.

Mercado lacks experience in the position so he will make some questionable plays because of it. He is an athlete first and ball player second out there as well. The more innings he gets the less mistakes he will make and i think having DeShields around should help since he is a gold glove defensive guy and a second generation player as well (usually those guys have the best baseball IQs).

For me I see DeShields only starting against left handers for the most part and being a defensive sub/pinch runner. Reason why i state that is because you will have Reyes and Santana (maybe Bauers/Bradley) rotating between corner OF and DH probably with Luplow, Naquin and Mercado being there as well, starting DeShields normally batting wish doesn't make a ton of sense. Also DeShields is better against lefties than righties as well.

Who exactly do you think is our OF right now?

Naquin/Luplow
Mercado
Reyes

seems more than solid
Naquin can't stay healthy for more than 50 AB's
Luplow is literally a platoon bat
Mercado has mental issues he's dealing with, I fully expect a major decline
Reyes is a dumpster fire with the mit and meh with the bat

In other words. Reyes will be a big time flop as with every other prediction coming from your way
