Anybody know why we traded for McGee, who will make $4.2 M this season, when Hassan Whiteside signed with the Kings a few days later for one year at $2.3 M? Both will be free agents next year
Nobody has said it, but a few things stand out to me:
1. Cavs didn't want Jordan Bell and Alfonzo McKinnie taking up two roster spots if they could be traded and immediately dropped. Taking on a player under contract at about 4 million was always the plan.
2. A trade instead of a FA signing saves more of the MLE for future use. They used a fraction of the MLE to sign Dotson.
3. Everyone, including McGee, agreed to the deal. Whiteside getting into a bidding war would end up more expensive, especially if he preferred Sacramento at the end of the day.
