Nobody has said it, but a few things stand out to me:

1. Cavs didn't want Jordan Bell and Alfonzo McKinnie taking up two roster spots if they could be traded and immediately dropped. Taking on a player under contract at about 4 million was always the plan.

2. A trade instead of a FA signing saves more of the MLE for future use. They used a fraction of the MLE to sign Dotson.

3. Everyone, including McGee, agreed to the deal. Whiteside getting into a bidding war would end up more expensive, especially if he preferred Sacramento at the end of the day.

Whiteside started all 67 games for Portland last year averaging 30 mpg, 15.5 pts, 13.5 rebs, and 2.9 blocked shots, which led the league. He also shot 62.1% from the field. He's a year younger than McGee who averaged 16.6 minutes, 6.6 pts, 3.9 rebs, and 1.4 blocked shots. If you project McGee to 30 minutes he's still behind Whiteside in all those categories.

I suppose the advantage of trading for McGee as opposed to signing the free agent Whiteside is by trading we got rid of the contracts of Bell and McKinnie, who we had no use for this year. It opened up a roster spot for Dotson.

But I was intrigued by the idea of adding the best shot blocker in the NBA for only $2.3 M, especially when he also scores and rebounds. It's crazy that he's getting $2.3 M while Drummond, who had similar numbers last year, is getting $28 M. In fact, Drummond had a lower shooting percentage, way fewer blocked shots, and more than double the turnovers as Whiteside.

Whiteside has motivational issues where he takes games off. I don't feel that criticism can be put on McGee or Drummond.

Gotta agree with Cavatt on all of this. Whiteside -for all the talent he does posses- tends to have issues with getting his motor working consistently. My Dad resides in Southern FL and got to watch a bunch of HEAT games when he was there and Coach Spo would be losing his mind over his play.

It is telling a team like Portland who lacks size to some level let him go. McGee is a fine fit for what we are aiming to do.
 
To add on to what's been said, Whiteside is also a lot of fool's gold when it comes to rim protection. He chases blocks at the expense of proper rim protection. He also demands a lot of post touches for a mediocre post player, who unlike Drummond, cannot pass.

And 4, the Cavs got a 2nd round pick along with McGee. Whiteside didn't come with an additional asset attached to him.

Which gets us what? The 35th best player in the 2026 draft? Not much of a sweetener IMO.
 
Ginobili was a #57 pick who they waited three years for, but in the long run it was worth it. So maybe we can get a pretty good player in 2029.

Denver only had to wait one year for Jokic. In general I like the idea of using a 2nd round pick on a Euro with upside even if you have to wait a year or three. It beats drafting a guy who's ready to play now but can't make your roster and never will.

Keep in mind that 2nd round picks in the future could potentially hold more value with High School players eligible to be drafted starting again in 2022.

Taking gambles on high profile recruits with late 2nd round picks could be beneficial as long as they develop in the G-League (Charge).

Well, they have accumulated three 2nd round picks next spring (in addition to their 1st round pick), then extra 2nd round picks in 2025-2027 so maybe that's what they're thinking - take high school players in the second round and develop them in the G-league for a couple of years.

The Cavs have three 1st and three 2nd round picks in the next two drafts so they have a chance to put together a nice young team when they add those picks to Sexton, Garland, Porter, Windler, Okoro, Nance, and potentially Drummond.
 
He should be getting 18-20mins a game, with Drummond getting 30-32mins. With our small back court we should always have a legit sized center on court

Somebody posted that Drummond commented that the Cavs might go with a front line of McGee, Drummond, and Nance when they need a stop. That would be interesting, especially if they put Okoro and Dotson at the other two positions.

If Drummond is really going to be busting his ass on defense instead of just lurking in the paint and gambling for steals then he'll need more time on the bench and McGee will be getting significant minutes.
