Tribe Signs Trot Nixon

Free-agent outfielder Trot Nixon has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cleveland Indians, ESPN.com's Peter Gammons reports.

Nixon, who has spent his entire pro baseball career with the Boston Red Sox organization and was popular with the team's fans for his gritty playing style, was not offered arbitration by the team after spending eight years as its starting right fielder.

^^^I guess Nixon is just a RF so that means Choo is out? Maybe a trade in the works? I can't imagine us having a platoon in LF (Michaels/Dellucci) and RF (Choo/Nixon).

Of course I forgot about Blake in RF but I'm assuming that he'll be battling with Garko for 1B. If Garko's not ready for 1B then that's where Blake will be.

Otherwise it's a Blake/Nixon platoon in RF and Choo to the minors or traded? This is a confusing move.

I agree, he's a veteran... but also injury-prone. And what about the logjam in the outfield now? Michaels, Dellucci, Choo, Blake, and Nixon for two outfield positions? Does that make sense?

Last year Nixon hit .288 against right-handers and .204 against lefties. He injured his right biceps swinging at a pitch in late July. The injury, and a staph infection that followed, ruined a promising season.
