With the 94th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...
Martin Emerson - CB - Mississippi State
PFF Big Board Rank: 76
Height: 6' 2"
Weight: 201
Class: Jr.
Age: 21.5
Emerson possesses ideal size for the cornerback position at the next level and was exceptional at putting caps on opposing receivers in college. He allowed only one catch of 25-plus yards last season.
Pros
- Very patient and under-control playstyle.
- Initiates contact routinely in ways to not commit penalties.
- Attacks the catch point with great timing and hand placement.
Cons
- Long speed isn't there. Relies on maintaining contact with receivers.
- Rounded off breaks. Doesn't have that suddenness when he puts his foot in the ground.
- Relied on lack of illegal contact penalties to catch defenders in off-coverage.
Review
Where he wins: Length
Emerson wins with his length. He's a unique size for the corner position and has had an in-built physicality advantage against almost everyone he went up against.
What's his role: Press-Zone
Emerson is a press-zone corner. He can stonewall guys at the line, but he's not going to be able to guard a full route tree in the NFL.
What can he Improve: Off Coverage
Most of Emerson's negatives are physical in nature, but his technique in off-coverage has to change. He can't play every route in front of him flat-footed and get away with it at the next level.

Rationale
With the receiver position well-addressed in the first 2 rounds of the draft, the Chiefs turn their attention to filling major holes that remain on defense. Thankfully, one of the best players available is a scheme fit from a position of need.
Similar to 1st round pick, Kaiir Elam, Emerson is an extremely long, physical corner that fits well into Steve Spagnuolo's defensive scheme. He should be rising up draft boards and going much earlier than the late 3rd thanks to his above-average pro day alleviating some of the athleticism concerns that showed up on tape.
