Whisky Appreciation Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can you answer something for me? Is Blanton's a high-rye or high-wheat whiskey? It seems like it hits you in the face a lot more than Woodford, nonetheless, the flavors I get are similar. Why is that?

Woodford is a Rye bourbon as well. Also the flavors are similar because there are 3 types of bourbon recipes (Traditional, High Rye, High Wheat).

Most have something like 55% Corn 10% Wheat/Rye and the Rest Barley.

High Rye whiskeys have around 51-60% corn with 15-20% Rye and the rest barley
where as High Wheat have the same 51-60% corn 15-20% Wheat and the rest barley.

There is a NY company that has a "High Corn" bourbon which is almost 90% corn.

Also Bourbon must be aged in New Charred oak barrels for at least 6 months before it can be considered bourbon.

Why does it hit me in the face so much more than Woodford?

Higher concentration of Rye compared to Woodford. I think (not sure as it is hard to get these numbers but you can guess by taste) Blanton's is probably 60% corn 20% Rye and 20% barley where as Woodford is closer to 60% corn 15% Rye and 25% barley

Different distillers will have different recipes for Bourbon. Blanton's is a Buffalo Trace distillery bourbon (keep in mind their Pappy Van Winkle and W L Weller are Wheated Bourbons).

Where as Woodford Reserve is part of the Woodford distillery. Also it depends on where the barrels are aged (usually the top of the racks are the best).

It depends on how you drink the whiskey/bourbon. Do you like it neat? On the Rocks? Washed? The different ways of drinking it will bring out different flavors. Also the flavors are very subtle. We aren't talking about OOOO Vanilla whiskey. It is more of a taste... Hmm tasted a hint of vanilla in that one.

It also depends on what the bourbon/whiskey recipe is. If it is more than 51% corn it is going to be a lot sweeter. Also if a bourbon is wheated then it's flavors and aroma are muted. If it is rye based then it's flavors hit you in the face like a pissed off woman you tried to hit on.

HIGH-RYE RECIPE:
Basil Hayden’s
Buffalo Trace
Bulleit
Eagle Rare

Four Roses
George T. Stagg
Old Forester
Old Grand-Dad
Woodford Reserve

HIGH-WHEAT RECIPE:
Maker’s Mark
Old Fitzgerald
Rebel Yell
Old Rip Van Winkle/Pappy Van Winkle
W.L. Weller

I prefer the HIGH-RYE bourbons as they are more in your face and want to hit you hard. The others are smooth but, for me, lack depth (except pappy 20 yr).
Thanks, that was really helpful. Is there a way to bring out the subtle flavors?

I have only ever had bourbon/whiskey neat.

I have a bottle of crown royal at home. Should I try it with ice? Or try a different bottle? I've been wanting to try Buffalo Trace

Crown Royal is a Canadian Whiskey and has a different Recipe than say bourbon. IT would be like comparing Apples to coconuts.

My thoughts are if you want to try a good bourbon that isn't too strong go with Eagle Rare. It is a 10 year age and I would recommend on the rocks (it is the only way I drink bourbon but that is a personal preference).

Also Crown is a blend (while a lot of your non-single barrel bourbons are a blend they don't mix ages). Crown, on the other hand, is a blend of various aged whiskey's (could be 6 months to 3 years). The higher crown is older aged whiskeys but usually Crown doesn't have an age statement on there.

This is one of the reasons that if I drink pure Whiskey I go with Jameson's and make sure it is at least 12 years or Scotch Whiskey (Single malt Single distiller vs multiple distillers) that is also aged at least 12 years.

Bourbon is a lot of personal preferences. I like mostly anything from Buffalo Trace and Woodford. Makers mark (to me) is now paint thinner and I can't even drink Crown any more as well (again paint thinner).

Room temp. Also Try a variety of bourbons so you know what you like. This is a good <$50 bottle.

What you are finding is the higher end W L Weller.

Old Antique Weller is about 200 a bottle
and W L Weller 12 year is cheap at 25 a bottle.

Problem with linking to any Pappy Bottles that aren't on the secondary market is that they are always out of stock until October/November when they start hitting the market. I was going to have a buddy apply for the PA lottery and see if I could get a bottle.

Pappy is only released once a year in Oct or nov

Very well aware of that fact. That's why I said when they start hitting the market in October November......

Jack Daniels, Jameson, Jim Beam, Fireball

Don't think I've ever just casually drank whisky, though. Always been a mixed drink or shots.

Curious to hear your opinion.
I didn't get any of the subtleties, but it was definitely the best bourbon I've had. That said still wasn't wild about it, but maybe by the end of the bottle I'll have acquired a taste for it.

I suggest it over ice. If you drank it neat try on ice. Also it is an acquired taste. Much like anything else. I can suggest bottles and brands but, ultimately, it is up to your preferences.
