Windows 10

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So if 10 sucks and I get it am I stuck with it? Or can I revert back to the 7 that is excellent already?

You're stuck with it.. Microsoft stopped offering downgrade options after Windows 8.1 came out.

Essentially, you'd be forced to format your computer and start over.

But my advice at this point would be the following:

If Windows 10 is great, then great! Use it.. It'll make all of our lives a lot simpler.
But if Windows 10 sucks, it's time to move on. At that point, I'd sell my laptop and PC and just buy a Macbook and build a Mac Pro (for my desktop (you can use a Mac Mini license)).

Also, what happened to 9?

They skipped it entirely.

Three reasons:

1) There are lots of poorly written applications that associate the substring "Windows 9" with "Windows 95 / 98se / Me" due to a call similar to if (string.contains("Windows 9")) { // do Windows 95 stuff }. So as not to break lots of programs that will programmatically fail if run on anything lower than Windows XP, they had to do something.

2) The number nine is unlucky in Japan. This was a reason for several companies to skip the number 9 in their versioning altogether.

3) Windows 9 did exist, but was essentially just Windows 8.2. Windows 10 is supposedly a large rebuild of what Windows 8 was supposed to be, so essentially 9 was scrapped in the very earliest stages.

From a PR perspective, going from 8 to 10 causes buzz, people talk about it.. But this is not the same as Mac OS going from 9 to X (10).

3.1 for work groups was their best platform.

The bolded isn't true bro. Trust me, I wish it was.. I have no choice but to use Windows, every day, all day..
...I use 8.1 every single day and notice no negative differences between it and 7.

This doesn't mean those differences don't exist and aren't experienced by others; especially power users.

I could name off 20 negative differences in a heartbeat. We're talking some MAJOR fucking problems with W8 that are just completely insane that they felt were good ideas.

My personal favorite? Your computer says "Fuck off, I'm rebooting to apply updates.. Hope you saved your work!"

Another one.. "Next time you login to this remote server, it will fucking restart.. Better bust out regedit.exe and stop me before you disconnect, or your clients will be piissseedd....!"

MS-DOS 5 was my personal fav.. I used to love fixing destroyed DoubleSpaced partitions.. hahaha

DOS 6.22 would probably be next (was the most refined).

So @gourimoko....I have a sata drive that clicks and isn't recognized and has hundreds of gigs of music on it. What's my best bet to try and salvage the data?

And that right there is why no company will ever use Windows 8. You just can't have remote servers rebooting of their own accord. People would throw an absolute shit fit where I work if that happened.

Still, it's probably fine for the average user on this board. I see no reason to switch, though, since Windows 7 works fine and 10 will be free. When I built my PC I actively opted for 7 even though 8 was out just because the new interface for 8 was laughably awful for a desktop.

I'm upgrading to Windows 10 solely so I can stream my Xbox One to my PC and actually get to play the thing instead of watching my wife monopolize the tv

I'll be sticking with Windows 8.1 for now, since Microsoft yanked Windows Media Center from Windows 10.

Assuming 10 isn't all fakakta, what advantages over my beloved 7 can I expect?

A lot of the improvements will be for gaming. Like X mentioned about streaming from xbox to pc. They also have the dx12 API which is again a pc gaming thing. For every day users I really don't know what will set it apart. Windows 7 is a fine OS, and I still use it. @gourimoko could probably help you more there. If I was in your shoes I would hold onto 7 for the time being.
