Zydrunas Ilgauskas turned down a two-year contract offer from the Cavaliers.

The veteran center inked a one-year pact with Cleveland on Tuesday after becoming eligible to re-sign with the team on Monday.

"I just wanted to get the deal done, finish the season here and win this damn thing," Ilgauskas said, referring to an NBA championship. "We've been waiting long enough."

Ilgauskas is expected to play on Wednesday night against the Hornets.

The Cavaliers offered him a two-year deal that could have been worth as much as $3 million, but Ilgauskas opted for the one-year deal.

Interesting at the very least.maybe he's recanting his thoughts about re-signing next year?(Orginially, earlier in the season, he said he wanted to play with us next year, and was putting to rest people saying he's going to retire after this season, not to imply he'd play somewhere else)

*also via Plain Dealer too, just too lazy to post a link..*

Him and his agent probably just want to snag more money by trying to get a piece of our mid-level-exception next season.

I think a one year works real well for both Z and the Cavs. If Z plays real well and helps us win the title, then he's in a good position come next year as a FA. If he plays not so well, the Cavs haven't paid him yet for next year and can pay what he may be worth for one more year. Win win for both sides.

I just think it gives Z greater flexibility in the off-season. He may be undecided on whether he wants a 2 year deal, or a one year deal, or even retirement after this season. In addition, he has kids now, and that may play into his decision for next year. He might even decide to do two one-year deals for the vet minimum. I'm not really worried about it. I don't think he'll ever play for another team.

Why wouldn't he sign a one year deal?

If LeBron leaves, then he isn't stuck here.

He could possibly get more money next season from part of our MLE.

Maybe he decides to retire if we win a title.

Assume LBJ and Shaq stay. That leaves us with....

C- Shaq, Andy
PF- Jamison, JJ, Powe

Z would be the 5th big at best. If we win a title and Shaq returns, I could definitely see Z going out on top instead of being a bench warmer next season.

Even with that said, I would love for Z to come back. He would be great insurance for a Shaq/Andy injury obviously.

From CBBI's recap on Windy today:
Is there any significance to the Cavs not signing Z to a 2 year deal?

BW: No significance. The Cavs offered him 2 years, but Z wanted 1 year. Z seems to want to protect himself from an extremely limited role next year if that's something that came up. Z just wanted some flexibility going into the summer.

I have the same thoughts Windy has. If we win a title, I am not sure why Z would want to come back and ride the bench and barely ever play next season.

but i wana spend the full MLE on Manu.....

Sike.5th at Worst.Ill take Powe over Z any day,
i agree with the idea of him leaving this year though if we win it,im sure he'd rather go out with a bang than dwindle away

bw said his 1 year deal is valued at 2 million (he gets about 9k of that). How did that happen? Is that the BAE? The other thing he said is we can give him a 20% raise over the full value of this deal without using any of the MLE. We couldn't pay him that much had he signed a 2 year deal now, so it was worth a bit more money to do it this way even if he plans to stay.

Good for both parties...

Allows us a roster spot free if something intriguing trade wise opens up. Or to buy a possible pick in the draft...

If we win a title Z may ride off into the sunset

If LeBron bolts Z may want to go somewhere like Dallas and get another shot a ring and meaningful play.

Windy said there was no difference. Z is planning on being here next year, the only difference is that he wanted to leave the option open that if the Cavs don't have a rotation spot for him next year, he wants the option to play somewhere where he'll get some burn.

Clearly Z knows Lebron's true intentions. They're best buds. This obviously means that Lebron is going to the Knicks this offseason, and Z plans on joining him as a backup big off the bench on a vet min. contract. League sources have told me that this is why Lebron met with Z in New York while they were playing the Nets weeks ago. In that meeting, Lebron asked Z to take a one year deal so he could join him in NY next season.

There, can I work at ESPN now?

Z's just being smart with his career. He doesn't need money, so he's just keeping his options open.

I wish all NBA players were as smart as Z, then we wouldn't have thugs carrying around guns, doing drugs, fighting, throwing up gang signs, etc...

Idk if you'll get a job at ESPN, but I'm sure you just gave NY fans a chubby right there with that statement.
