2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
From Alex Kennedy (Hoopsworld)

Alex Kennedy: Cleveland and Portland have talked about swapping draft picks, according to source. Cavs would get #6 and #11, Blazers would get #4 and #24.

I would like a few other players instead of Barnes, but this makes a ton of sense if that is who the Cavs want. You still get the player you want while also moving up from 24 to 11. Then you can get another very good player there. We would still be able to buy a late first rounder or maybe trade our 2 second round picks for a first rounder.

How many of you would hate the Barnes, Rivers/Ross combo at 6 and 11 if it came to reality?

Depending on how we play our cards we can have two more positions locked up in our starting lineup for the next decade. I don't know who is better from a talent or potential aspect.

I think to have the PG, SG, and SF positions solidified would be great. But I believe when you have size/bigs it's easier to develop a defensive philosophy, especially when our guards can just lead someone toward Drummond or another solid frontline defender.

I also think we need to look at the depth of players available at certain positions. . After Drummond there is a drop-off of serious talent, where as the small forward position/shooting guard positions are pretty deep. We have needs at every position minus Kyrie...

Rivers has gotten lost in the shuffle when his team lost in the first round of the tournament. What is his floor/celling? Ronnie Brewer/Eric Gordon?

I don't think that Rivers would floruish alongside KI. He's very much a ball dominant scorer and hasn't shown the ability to catch and shoot very well at all. I realy don't want to see him dribbling away and trying to find a slashing spot while KI is standing there looking at him. Plus, he's never met a pass he wanted to make.

I've heard a lot of Monta Ellis/Jason Terry comparisons as ceilings, which sounds about right. Floor is... Rudy Fernandez? Jodie Meeks?

Was Rivers ball-dominant in high school like he was in his first/only year at Duke? Rivers has limitless scoring potential, I totally appreciate about him. If he can't play off the ball though, he negates Kyrie's abilities greatly I think. Dunno, glad I'm not making the decisions here.

Here's the workout schedule for the Cavs

Nobody negates Irving abilities. Irving brings the ball up passes all to rivers. river shoots hit one of the big men in the paint or hits kyrie off the ball.

This is why they are not building around kyrie. They dont need to. any set up of good players Irving will get his or can complement to be effective.

I would worry about Rivers wanting the ball too much if Irving wasn't such a good shooter. Irving can play like a PG or SG. I just want our team to not depend only on Irving to create shots.

I really don't understand how MKG is considered much better than Barnes. I pretty much agree with these ratings MKG on the left, Barnes on the right:

I would actually say that Barnes is a little more athletic, and MKG is the better rebounder, other than that I think these ratings are pretty good.

Barnes is not as good of a rebounder as MKG, lol no chance in hell. And not nearly as good at defense either.

Was Rivers ball-dominant in high school like he was in his first/only year at Duke?

Yes, but he got better about it at Duke. Honestly, some of his ball-dominance reputation might be because he had to bail Duke out on possessions when the shot clock was down to 5 or so. The best thing is that he can slash and get in the lane easily at an NBA level - finding shooting guards that can take people off the dribble one-on-one is difficult, and having two would be awesome. He also used a lot of on-ball screens at Duke - that's probably when he's at his best (screen, read, get in the lane, finish), but he's not as great feeding to the roller. He might struggle to figure out finishing at the rim against taller opponents, but all rookies (except Kyrie) have issues with that. His shooting is overrated (36.5% from college 3 and his shooting form is too weird for that to be consistent from NBA range, imo).

That having been said... I think there are better options at 11. But I wouldn't be unhappy with a Kyrie-Austin backcourt.

Getting #6 an #11? I can get behind that...maybe. I assume we'd do Barnes at #6? Eh. I dunno.

i'm guessing you haven't heard of that batum guy?

Yeah, I hear he's going to be a free-agent. If Portland would rather spend their cap space elsewhere, they may want a replacement in the draft.

don't really see how he helps them win now anyway but okay.

There are a lot of players available at #4 who are considered more NBA ready than Drummond, including Barnes.

Anyway, we always have to be careful with our assumptions. Just because Portland's GM is big on prep stars doesn't mean Drummond would be the guy he wants ... Barnes and Rivers were super hyped as well. We might also throw Anderson in to a deal, as it doesn't sound like Portland would really want our #24 pick anyway.
