2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Grabbing #6 and #11 would be ideal IMO.

at #6 you get one of:

Davis, MKG, Robinson, Drummond, Beal or Barnes.

Then at #11 you likely get one of:

PJIII, Rivers, Lamb, Ross, maybe even Moultrie.

I wonder who Portland really wants at #4 though? They must really love one player in particular....

My guess is Beal to try and replace Brandon Roy. Their PF+SG combo worked pretty well for them before Roy's injuries.

If the draft goes

Davis
TRob/MKG
MKG/TRob
Beal
Barnes
Drummond

then I think the Cavs will make the trade, if not then we keep Beal. The only way we get screwed is if Washington likes Beal more than MKG, or if Charlotte likes Beal more than MKG.

Unfortunately Washington just drafted a player last year at the SF spot. If the Bobocats take MKG then TRob will be a Wizard.

We will know more by draft day obviously, but I think they want a replacement for Roy, and Beal seems like he'd be a good fit in Portland. Portland knows that if they want Beal #4 is where they would have to grab him, because if he falls past #4 then Sacremento takes him.

There's no way the Blazers let Batum go. He's a 23 year old wing, who averaged almost 14 ppg and 4.6 rpg this past year and shot 39% from 3-point range.

The problem is that those numbers aren't good enough to just match if someone makes him a ridiculous offer.

You said it yourself, if they "want to win-now then they should ____". Does letting Batum go in favor of Barnes actually get them closer to that objective? Not only that, but they have well over $20M in cap space, plenty to both re-sign Batum and spend on other positions.

Possibly, like I said, it has to do with what they want to do with their cap space. If they can bring in some better win-now pieces with their cap space and then replace Batum with a cheaper rookie, that's fine. But if they have no concern for money, I believe Batum is only a $5m cap hold, so they can bring in whoever they want and then match any offer. I just don't think that sort of thing can float under the new CBA rules.

But then again, maybe because of the new CBA the FA offers for Batum will be more reasonable....

We'll see?

There's lots of ways things can play out... but it won't play out until *after* the draft. So Portland is going to have to make their best guess here ... or else put some potential deals on the back burner.

what if the draft goes like this?

1. Davis
2. MKG
3. Beal
4. Drummond
5. Barnes

we would be fucked if that happens...that's why i'm not convinced this is a great trade (plus i want Drummond...)

Then we take Robinson and run.

If thats the case then I'm sure no one here will think were getting screwed as 98% of this board seems to want MKG.

My thoughts exactly, though I'm one of your supposed 98%.

If getting MKG mean's we're getting screwed, you can call me Jenna fucking Jamison.

I meant screwed in the trade Jenna.

More than likely a trade wouldn't happen until the draft where we would trade the rights to the picks after the selections so if MKG were to drop I'd assume that the Cavs would hold onto the pick rather than trade down for 6 and 11.

Well yeah especially since Portland isn't interested in a SF most likely. I think they want Beal, all speculation of course.

I really don't understand how MKG is considered much better than Barnes. I pretty much agree with these ratings MKG on the left, Barnes on the right:

I would actually say that Barnes is a little more athletic, and MKG is the better rebounder, other than that I think these ratings are pretty good.

You think Barnes is more athletic than MKG?

On what planet is that the case?

I came across this article and thought some of the information was interesting:

Draft Measurements Article

Some of the comparisons, taken only to be physical ones, are definitely helpful in providing some visualizations:

  • Kendall Marshall doesn't stack up well when compared to top-15 draft picks since 1998. None of those players 6-foot-3 or taller has ever recorded a standing reach less than eight feet high. Marshall managed just 7'10.5" at the combine. In terms of wingspan for his height, Marshall looks very similar to Jarvaris Crittenton, while J.J. Redick is the only taller first-round pick to register a shorter wingspan (6'4" height with a 6'3.25" wingspan).
  • Austin Rivers fits in closely with Randy Foye in terms of wingspan and standing reach, but Rivers is 1.25 inches taller.
  • Jeremy Lamb is very similar to Dwyane Wade in his measurements. In fact, Wade's numbers are 0.25 inches shorter in all three length categories.
  • Terrence Ross looks a lot like Chase Budinger (0.25 inches shorter, 0.25 inches longer wingspan).
  • Perry Jones fits the physical profile of Joakim Noah. He actually weighs more than Noah did at the combine, posted the exact same standing reach, has 0.5 more inches on his wingspan and is just 0.25 inches shorter than the Bulls' center.
  • Terrence Jones is fairly close to Patrick Patterson.
  • Jared Sullinger looks a lot like Michael Sweetney did back in 2003 (0.5 inches taller, six pounds heavier, 0.25 inches longer wingspan and 0.5 inches shorter standing reach).
  • John Henson measured a lot like lanky Bucks forward Larry Sanders did back in 2010.
  • Andre Drummond looks like Jason Collins did in 2001. He also measured with physical dimensions similar to Eddy Curry (aside from the weight).
  • Meyers Leonard is similar to Primoz Brezec and Andrew Bogut.
  • Tyler Zeller's low standing reach makes a comparison tough, but Jason Smith is the closest notable big man.
