2012 Cavs Summer League

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dwayne Wade: 13.4 ppg in summer leauge
LeBron James: 15.4 ppg in summer league

do really REALLY have to single him out as a bust even though he is on the floor with no shooters to give him room?

Zeller impressed.

Dion was pressing.

Samardo looked like a SF, no more girth :chuckles:

Byron was laughing when Dion fucked up at the end of the game on that no-timeout technical.

pretty much sums it up... if scott is laughing, no ones should be worried.

I was most impressed by Zeller. He is a very seasoned player. The four years in college definitely honed his understanding of the game. After watching Z lumber around for so many years, Tyler Zeller is a sight for sore eyes. When I watch Enes Kanter play, I can't help but feel that we dodged a bullet. Tyler Zeller will be a better player than Enes and I think all of RCF would have been satisfied had we taken Irving and Kanter last draft.

Dion Waiters is going to be a frustrating player for a while until he learns the ins and outs of the game. He has a deceptive handle, and he is going to draw a shitload of fouls in his career. His jumpshot needs a lot of work, and he needs to understand that his bread and butter has to be penetration. Beal would have been great, but I wouldn't want him to be relegated to an outside shooter. Having a guy that can get to the cup at will eventually will open our entire offense up. With Zeller as the hub, our offense should be pleasant to watch once the wheels are in motion and the butterflies wear off for these young guys.

I have three observations.

1. No one on this squad can make an entry pass.

2. DJ Kennedy doesn't belong.

3. I can't believe I just spent 2 hours watching a summer league game.

I was excited to watch the Hornets game after the Cavs then I remembered that Davis is with the Olympic team. Dang.

Our #4 overall picks didn't do much to dispel their respective "reach" labels.

Zeller looked promising and like a real talent.

I thought Sloan and Samardo looked serviceable- surprising in The Donald's case but I was expecting more from Sam-Sam.

Though you might as well just toss these impressions in the trash because it's the 1st Summer League game and everything could be flipped on it's head tomorrow.

I've watched too much summer league at this point this year: it's probably negatively impacting my health at this point. (guess this is what happens when you have a job and kids)

Thoughts so far:
-Thomas Robinson's body looks more impressive then his game right now
-Barnes looked good his first game against a horrific Lakers summer league team (they literally don't have any prospects in that organization). His second game wasa big meh.
-Klay Thompson played well
-didn't see enough Beal or MKG to comment. The little bit of Beal I saw his ballhandling didn't look good enough to initiate the offense
-Jeremy Lamb looks like an NBA player

With regards to the Cavs game:
Waiters will be fine. His jumper was off and he was lazy in transitional D. On the positive: His ballhandling and quickness were definitely there and you caught glimpses of his ability to break down defenses (crossover in the first few minutes, split the double team at the end). If anything a bit too unselfish as our awful SF's got a lot of good looks

Zeller looks like a player: could easily see him starting him next to AV if he can hit that jumper consistently
Samuels looks like he's got much better explosion with loss of weight

My biggest concern by far: Tristan Thompson looked as raw as he did last year. Didn't finish with authority when in a crowded lane and went face up everytime he caught the ball (he had a nice jumphook on one sequence but he showed that last year). At least you saw Biyombo put some nice moves downlow, even when he didn't finish his footwork seemed a lot better. I know Zeller got a few years on Tristan but it looked like Zeller was the guy who was going into his second year player as an NBA starter and Thompson the raw project

TT showed two things:

firstly he still doesn't know where his hands are, he catches so many passes with his elbows its unbelievable.

he has been told to face guys up by coach scott and hes trying to do it, he had a couple of nice running hooks in the lane that seemed comfortable to him.

His offensive rebounding is still very strong and his finishing is still super soft. I don't think he will be a go to scorer anytime soon. Having said that i'm not sure he needs to be to be a good player and looking at the rest of the draft class its not like we passed up someone better.

I think Tris needs another off-season to get his strength up. Otherwise I thought he looked good.

I read the game thread with every body banging on Dion's lazy defense, but the score was 64/68... This Charlotte team scored 120 points in thier previous game. Are we saying MKG is worth a 60 point swing? Or was someone on the cavs team playing D?

He was getting bodied by both both big boy Mullens and Biyombo (who is a man mountain) so I can't really fault him, but I can see where you're coming from. He'll never be a Big Ben type power player, but most of his explosiveness will be finesse power dunks. I'm personally still waiting to see that improved jump shot that we've all been hearing about.

I feel like I have been waiting for improved jump shots the last eight years.
