2017 Browns Mock Draft Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why is Raekwon so highly rated? I always come away from watching him thinking he's very solid, but not special. Whether it be lack of elite athleticism or superior instincts or whatever, I just don't see him making the type of incredible plays that a Pro Bowler will make.

Don't know that he's ever going to be the guy who makes the WOW plays like Cunningham, but he's a guy who knows every assignment on the field and leads your defense and is always at the ball.

The steady presence every defense needs. Maybe the big plays come down the line, but even now he's a late first or early second round guy with great measurables and a future defensive captain for someone.

Allen is so incredibly talented, but God damnit is it hard to judge him on that Alabama line. Within .8 seconds the entire pocket is usually collapsed and its a scramble to who hits the QB first

Updated 3 ROUND (ain't that fun) USATODAY:

1. Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett, EDGE, Texas A&M
Conventional wisdom says the Browns will take a quarterback here, but I’m not convinced. Hue Jackson is confident he can develop 2016 third-round pick Cody Kessler, and the Browns need to fill their roster with as much pure talent as possible at every position. Garrett is far and away the best overall player in this draft, and should be the pick if Jackson wants to give Kessler more than a year to prove himself.

19. Cleveland Browns (from PHI): Teez Tabor, CB, Florida
Joe Haden needs a running mate to help shut down the other side of the field, so why not go back to his alma mater to find one? Tabor’s multiple suspensions will have NFL teams digging deep on his character, but there’s no denying he’s a first-round talent on the field.

33. Cleveland Browns: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama

44. Cleveland Browns (from TEN): Curtis Samuel, WR/RB, Ohio State

65. Cleveland Browns: Armani Watts, S, Texas A&M

Kessler is mediocre.

Time to kill that dream.

That said, I'm fine waiting for an actual great QB to come out and targeting him

OJ Howard at 33 would be amazing, although I'd like to see what he could do playing in an elite passing offense.

PFF's 1st mock:

  1. Cleveland Browns: Jonathan Allen, DI, Alabama
The Browns need help all over the roster and this could be a toss up between either Allen or Myles Garrett. Allen is the choice this time around as his destructive presence will pair with emerging DT Danny Shelton to build a strong defensive line for the Browns. Allen has been unblockable this season, leading all interior defensive linemen with a 93.7 pass rush grade while playing strong against the run in his first extended action on early downs. Allen can disrupt from multiple spots along the defensive front, giving Cleveland a 3-down foundational piece for the defense.

21. Cleveland Browns: Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State

Here’s where the draft takes a turn. In a quarterback class that lacks inspiration, Rudolph continues to improve an already-impressive skillset. He has the nation’s No. 2 passing grade at 88.6 and he throws the ball outside the numbers with better precision than any quarterback in the country. He deep outs and comebacks are often right on a receiver’s hands, showing the type of accuracy needed for the next level. Rudolph handles pressure well and while he’ll flutter his deep ball at times, he also flashes the downfield accuracy to create big plays in the passing game. Rudolph may just sneak up as a first-round candidate if he comes out this season.

UPDATED (Post Week 11) --

B/R:

1. Trubisky - QB - UNC
19. Ethan Pocic - C - LSU

Sports Illustrated:

1

MYLES GARRETT
DE/OLB, TEXAS A&M
As of right now, Cleveland would have four of the first 40 or so selections at the 2017 draft (its own first- and second-rounders, plus Philadelphia’s 1 and Tennessee’s 2). That capital could allow the Browns to take Garrett here and then trade up, if necessary, from their second Round 1 spot to grab a quarterback. It also would give them ample chances to add another QB, should they stay put. So, rather than going for broke out of the gate, they can grab the best player available.

18

DESHAUN WATSON
QB, CLEMSON
Doubt that every pick wraps up with a ribbon so nicely for the Browns—Garrett at No. 1, possibly the draft’s best QB at No. 18—but, again, they have the ammunition to make sure they do get a quarterback. Watson can be worrisome with his reads and inaccurate with his throws, but he’s shown up in big game after big game. He’s often at his best airing it out long.

1. Cleveland Browns

Myles Garrett, DE/OLB, Texas A&M:

The Browns have needs all over the roster and unless they fall in love with a quarterback, this pick needs to be the best talent in the draft, which is Garrett.

16. Cleveland Browns (from Philadelphia)

Sidney Jones, CB, Washington:

The Browns' secondary has been routinely torched this season with upgrades needed across the board. Jones has the instincts, ball skills and fluid athleticism that transitions well to the NFL.

MATT MILLER UPDATED:

1. The Pick: DL Jonathan Allen, Alabama

Where do we go from here?

The Cleveland Browns have a roster full of young talent—some developing, some not and a lot of it unproven—which means they could go in any direction at the top of Round 1.

The natural assumption is that the Browns would draft a quarterback—but not this year. Not yet, anyway, when there isn't a clear-cut No. 1 passer on the board. Mitch Trubisky may become that guy for me with more film study, but four months out he doesn't look ready to be a No. 1 pick.

That leaves two blue-chip defenders, both from the SEC, for Cleveland to choose from: Myles Garrett and Jonathan Allen.

Garrett is my top-ranked player, but as an edge-rusher he's more in line with the players the Browns drafted last year (Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Nassib), whereas Allen is more of a natural rusher from the 5-technique in a 3-4 defense with the versatility to play defensive end or defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme.

That versatility and the better fit make him the pick at No. 1 overall. Because Garrett and Allen are so closely graded, the scheme fit pushes the latter over the top.

13. The Pick: CB Quincy Wilson, Florida

A cornerback over a quarterback? That may seem ridiculous, but the last thing the Cleveland Browns can do is draft a quarterback too soon. Some will argue that drafting Deshaun Watson or Brad Kaaya here would be the smartest move—get as much talent at quarterback as possible and let them fight it out—but building a monster defense first and letting Josh McCown and Cody Kessler compete for the job in 2017 will give the Browns a better roster moving forward.

We're seeing great defenses carry average offenses across the league right now (hello, Denver), and while Cleveland has a gigantic need at quarterback, the NFL draft is about marrying needs and value.

The Browns have two picks in the second round to add a young developmental quarterback. With pick No. 13, the allure of shutdown cornerback Quincy Wilson is too great to pass on.

Matt Miller is not understanding how the Browns are using Nassib and Ogbah, I think it's obvious Garrett is the pick given his own criteria.

Love Quincy Wilson, some believe he's the better prospect between he and Teez Tabor.

13. Cranston Snored, Waterboy, Tufts University

He does this seemingly every year. Matt Miller is a 49ers fan and consciously or subconsciously, he finds a way for the 49ers to get the guy he's hoping for them to get. His mocks last year had Goff falling to them for the longest time before he finally had to admit it wasn't going to happen.

He may be skewed towards 49ers beliefs and certainly does not watch every single Browns game, but at least he is on the same boat as to not jump the gun on a QB unless there is an obvious #1.

Fill other holes and draft another guy if you want to later or if a guy on your board drops. Otherwise, build up everything else, and ride it out until next year. Actually build our line back up so our QB can go through a full 16 game season.

How I Fix The Browns - Vol. 2

Not going to include free agency in this, simply because I don't know how they attract much of anything in that regard.

Draft:

1 (1) - Myles Garrett - EDGE - Texas A&M - Nothing changes here. Simply the best.

1 (12) - Jamal Adams - S - LSU - Really struggled between Adams and Malik McDowell, who I think it an elite interior defender not far behind Jonathan Allen. Adams is a secondary leader and intelligent player who fills gaps nicely and has good enough cover skills to warrant this selection. Ideally, you'd like to move back a few spots and still get him.

2 (32) - Ryan Ramczyk - OT - Wisconsin - Was incredibly efficient against what I feel is the best DL in the country against OSU (film linked). Very tactical, uses great leverage and can get outside or to the second level. Will have to answer questions about his commitment to the game, he turned down Wisky out of HS to stop playing before wanting to play again later.

2 (46) - Kevin King - CB - Washington - Still think he's the best CB on his team, even better than Sidney Jones. Had him in the fourth round last time, but he's clearly a bigger prospect now. Long, athletic and quick enough to stay with receivers.

3 (65) - Pat Elfein - G/C - Ohio State University - Tactician that is well coached and often gets to the second level. Struggles to maintain leverage at times, and could stand to get a bit quicker. But a line manager and easy starter at the next level to solidify the interior.

4 (Comp A) - Joshua Dobbs - QB - Tennessee - If you're looking for a potential "Next Dak," take a look at Dobbs. He's raw, athletic and intelligent with a quick release and superb leadership skills. This is a guy Hue Jackson can work with to develop his skills, while not using the high draft pick on guys who are similarly talented.

4 (Comp B) - Taywan Taylor - WR - Western Kentucky - If he gets to the combine and runs well, he's going higher than this. Deep speed and reliable hands

5 - Riley Bullough - ILB - Michigan State - Hard nosed guy that is a tenacious blitzer and fills gaps well, but can be fooled by misdirection and ends up out of position too much.

5 (NE) - Ryan Glasgow - DL - Michigan - I started watching film on Chris Wormley and walked away with this guy as a top notch contributor and value pick. He's got a non-stop motor and is incredibly well coached. Michigan moves him across all three interior gaps and he's a constant presence. Check out #96 in this film and tell me he's not a problem.

5 (Comp C) - Brandon Langley - CB - Lamar - Former wide receiver transferred from Georgia and converted. Has good side and really excellent speed and change of direction, but can show off he's new to the position with some awkward footwork at times.

6 - Alex Ross - RB - Oklahoma/Missouri - Taller, upright runner that is really hard to bring down and has good speed. Never lived up to the hype in college, but could be an interesting developmental guy behind Crow and Duke.

7 - Tarell Basham - DL - Ohio U - Really big and rangy guy who could put on some additional muscle and still show athleticism. Guy you coach into a contributor down the line.
