#21: Browns select Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm not attacking anybody when I say this...but this whole he would've been there stuff...How the hell do any of you know that??? I bet if before the draft I made a mock draft having Bowers out of the first round and having Jake locker go as early as he did...you all would've laughed at me. So the same way that you are wrong about those guys were drafted, maybe you're wrong about where Taylor would've been drafted. I've seen quite a few mocks that had him being drafted at 21 but it was by KC.

As for those who say look at the guys drafted after he was drafted and pointing out that teams went ot other positions.... Haven't we read ad naseum that teams draft the best guy on their board? So if Phil Taylor is drafted that doesn't mean that a team who had him on their board is automatically going to draft another DT...THEY TAKE THE NEXT GUY ON THEIR BOARD!!!

I want Rahim Moore with the ATL 2nd. The dude is a ball hawk and the best FS in the draft. We need a FS, Elam is playing out of position. I'm not sure he will be there.

If Rahim is there, I would like that pick a lot. After Bowers, of-course.

Phil would have been there at 27. Who was going to pick him otherwise? With all the holes Heckert's talked about, I don't know why he gave up a pick to reach for a player.

Now that, that's over... I like the pick now. I understand what Jauron is doing.

Hopefully now we can go with two DE's in round two or trade down and get more picks.

It was reported that Indy, who was picking ahead of us, was very high on Taylor. KC also was interested, but apparently didn't want to take him at 21. It's pretty much impossible to say that he would have been there at 27 solely based on who was picked after him. There's always a chance that a team could have traded up in front of us to take him. I'd rather give up the 3rd and make sure we got a guy we really wanted than stand pat and watch him get drafted by someone else.

They got his coach on the really big show right now. Sayin that his tweet shouldn't be a concern. He suggested putting whatever weight the Browns want him at in his contract.

How about to teams that were picking before us?

22 Indianapolis Anthony Castonzo
23 Philadelphia Danny Watkins
24 New Orleans Cameron Jordan
25 Seattle James Carpenter
26 Kansas City Jonathan Baldwin
27 Baltimore Jimmy Smith

So... Looks like all the players they picked was def a need. As I stated... Phil would've been there at 27 and we would've kept our 3round pick.

Do you not understand teams pick the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, not based on offensive or defensive needs all the time.

Please see my earlier post or Optomist's...you really have no clue.

To me, this isn't the salient point here. What really matters is how far of a drop-off was there between Phil Taylor and our next best rated guy. We got our guy, I'm happy about it.

It's impossible to say that he would have been there. The Jets were looking NT and there could have been teams looking to trade up as well.

Shit I expected Locker and Ponder to be there in the 2nd round...

I didn't expect the Seahawks to take an OG at #25 that most people had rated later 2nd Round talent.

Seriously, what's your deal? Just because they didn't draft a DT doesn't mean they would have passed on Taylor if he was there. Here's a quote from Heckert's press conference:

Tom Heckert

(On the threat of another team taking Taylor)- “He was so high on our board that we just figured that somebody else might do the same thing. We had a chance to get him so we did, but we thought there was a chance that he might go whether that is true or not, I guess we will never know.”

The Browns really wanted the guy and didn't want someone else to jump up and take him. The pick we gave up is nothing if we got the guy we really wanted. We got the additional picks from Atlanta anyway, so we might end up back in the 3rd round. The Jets and Colts among other teams reportedly had him very high on their boards.

Red, first, please change your font back to normal like everyone else's on this forum.

B, how do you know those teams would not have taken him? Because they went in a different direction because the best run stopping DT is off the board?

The Browns obviously knew something that we didn't because I am 100% positive H&H would not throw away a 3rd round pick if they knew, like you did, that he would be there at 27. H&H went out there and got their guy, a huge body that will make 2 O-linemen work hard to keep him from getting to their QB/RB and open big holes for the LBs to get through and make plays.

Here's why we moved up:

"Why trade up from 27 to 21:" is the question many Browns fans asked. One Jets source "in the know" texted me and told me the Browns made the move for Taylor to prevent the Jets from doing the same. WKNR out of Cleveland reported early Friday morning that the Philadelphia Eagles were looking to make a similar move.
