#21: Browns select Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's why we moved up:

Bingo. Sure, if you only look at the draft value chart we slightly overpaid. However, if we didn't trade up we ran the risk of not getting the guy we really wanted. It's starting to look like the Browns wanted to bring in Bowers and Taylor the whole time and really thought it could be a possibility. Today should be interesting.

My thoughts (some may be duplicates of the previous 6 pages...didn't have time to read through)

- Since coming back in 1999, the best the Browns have ranked in rushing defense is 23rd in 2003. And thats the best BY FAR!!! Every other year the Browns finished 27th or worse. Some of that might be a function of being behind and other teams running out the clock, or bad LB play, or scheme, or whatever. But WE NEED TO START STOPPING THE RUN AT SOME POINT!!!! Even being slightly below average would be a huge improvement. Definitely a run stuffing DT, even with Rubin, is a need.

- I didn't like giving up a 3rd to move up 6 picks. Definitely think we could've done that a little better. Of course, we have a bunch of extra picks this and next after the Atl trade, so we can could afford it. The Atl makes giving up a 3rd more understandable.

- My biggest issue: This is a boom or bust pick. No denying that a guy that big that can move that well could be a stud. However, weight and character issues are there. I had a hard believing H&H wouldn't go the safe route early (ala Haden) and take the more risky guys later (Hardesty, McCoy).

edit - Also, this guy would've been a coup for the Steelers as well. Someone suggested taking a guy the Steelers would take. Well, I think we did that.

Do you not understand teams pick the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, not based on offensive or defensive needs all the time.

How do you figure? All the teams that actually picked, picked off NEED.

NAME A TEAM THAT PICKED BPA.

Please see my earlier post or Optomist's...you really have no clue.

I have my OWN opinion. Isn't that why we post on this board? Exactly.

But I'll read earlier post. Thanks.

To me, this isn't the salient point here. What really matters is how far of a drop-off was there between Phil Taylor and our next best rated guy. We got our guy, I'm happy about it.

I have no problem with the pick. I just hate we traded an extra pick. We needed all our picks, IMO.

They all did according to their boards.

If you honestly believe teams just pick based on their biggest need, they are going to get burned in the draft.

We traded a third, but added a 2nd and 4th. By my count we still have better then what we would have had.

Maybe Heckert knew a team right before him at 27 was going to take Taylor? He simply didn't want that to happen especially if he really liked him. I stated early on that I thought the Browns were prepared to move back up from 27 if a player they liked was there a few spots above them and they really wanted the player. It happened. We traded back up. I'm fine with it. It's obvious to me and should be to others the Browns wanted this guy. Who am I to say otherwise? I'm willing to see what happens. I think we will see today and tomorrow that we had a plan all along. We will get our DE probably with the 37th pick and a WR with the 57th pick. Don't be surprised if we trade up again with either of those picks. I think we want Bowers BTW.

People said he has character issues...call me dumb but I don't mind that the guy we drafted got in trouble for beating someone up. This wasn't robbery, sexual assault, or stealing computers...he beat someone up. I'd have more of a problem with his character if he had gotten beat up. Defensive line is a nasty position...Ndamakan (sp) Suh tried to to throw our QB's helmet into the stands in a preseason game...did I mention that Jake Delhommes head was still in the helmet??? You telling me you don't want that kind of guy as your DT??? Last time we had a nice guy as a D-Lineman was Courtney Brown, he had every measurable needed but he was a nice guy and that hurt his overall game. I've read the same thing about Kam Wimbley (although he was really effective for the Raiders last year).

I'll take an onery DL-man over a choir boy anytime.

AS for trading a the pick... Heckert probably felt like we were playing with the houses money at that point having gotten an extra 2 and 4 from ATL...not that big of a deal if you ask me.

I think Brown's injuries had a lot more to do with why he never measured up to be what he could have been. He had a good rookie year and then got hit with the injury bug.

The mean streak is a nice thing to have as long as it isn't a problem off the field. A one time incident isn't bad either, as long as he's learned from it.

Don't forget who taught Heckert what he knows Red. Reid might have been the ultimate decision maker in Philly, but Heckert certainly had say. The two probably think a lot alike.

yeah, i never understood why people thought fairley's tendency to go for the big blindside hits on qb's after the whistle was a negative. i'd gladly take that nastiness and intimidation factor than a guy who gently pushes over the qb and picks him up right after. aggressiveness can be coached, while the lack of it can't.

He had 4.5 sacks as a rookie...good??? I'd say more like so/so...
He was better as a run stopper...you don't draft run stoppers first over all...imo

lol @ this Red guy freaking out because Mel Kiper's Best Available doesn't directly correlate with how the draft plays out.

"Look no one draft Phil Taylor after we took him, so we could have had him at 27 because no one attempted to re-draft him from us. Browns is dumb!"

I'm just glad we did something about our terrible run defense. We have not been able to stop the run since I can remember. It is so frustrating watching the other team run it up the middle for 5 or 6 yards before contact is even made, then watching them bounce off our defenders and getting another 4 or 5 yards before being brought down.
