The only reason I'm passionate about this topic is because I myself have never viewed it in the racist light other people have viewed it as, and I don't associate the logo with real Native American people. Most people don't.

In my opinion, the Wahoo symbol is disgusting. You think otherwise. That's fine. We can argue about whether or not to keep it, but I've seen you state that it isn't a racial caricacature quite a few times, @shoes22. No matter how we might feel; that is exactly what it is.

Why are you inserting race into this at all? That's the problem I have.
The team would do well to clarify this, but they don't really bother.

:chuckle:

See what I'm saying?

We must be talking about two completely different things if you don't think the "Cleveland Indians" with "Chief Wahoo" has anything to do with race.

New York Jews, San Fran Chinks, etc.. it's the same thing.

I'm having a hard time understanding how you dont see a red cartoon Indian representing Indians as racist

I am saying it doesn't represent any race.

"Cleveland INDIANS"
"CHIEF WAHOO"
"The TRIBE"

Bro.. c'mon.. You are a smart guy... You're not thinking rationally though; I think because you are admittedly quite "passionate" about this.

I .. can't believe that line of argumentation.

This is exactly why I don't think there's any point arguing this.

We all know the cloudy history behind the name and logo, but is context not important anymore? The way that the image is used in 2016? Why are we still associating that image with actual Native American people, when the "purpose" of that logo represents something else entirely? To me, that's what's ignorant. Still trying to tie it to a racial past, when it's only been used in a baseball context for several decades now.

Once again...

The same outrage you feel that there are people who don't get why or don't feel the name/logo is viewed as racist can be the same outrage felt by people who think people should be smart enough to distinguish the difference between a sports team logo and a real person.

This is why the conversation and "progression towards a Chief free uniform" goes nowhere, because people take the extremes and shit on the side that disagrees with them instead of trying to look at it the way they are looking at it and reasoning with them from there.

I get why people like you are appalled at the Chief Wahoo logo and that it still exists in 2016.

I also get why people like shoes feel like people should be smart enough to distinguish between a logo and a real human.

This is a fundamental problem in everything right now...everyone is so up their own ass in their own ways/opinions/feelings on things that they go to the extremes when discussing controversial topics...why jack shit gets done, because now anyone who disagrees with someones stance is now personally against them for some reason.

Block C navy hat also matches with everything it seems. One of my go to hats. Not a bad buy is what I'm saying.
Gonna disagree, but because I really liked the script I

Why did they go away from this? The block C looks like the Cubs logo.

I honestly have never really understood the notion that one can be justifiably outraged at people who feel outrage as some kind of assumed equivalence.

Also, and this is just me personally, I'm not running around feeling outrage. I just think this is all a rather remarkable example of irrational thinking on a massive scale, and so I've given up on trying to convince people of the issue.

But secondly, if someone says "this is a racist caricature that we should stop using," and another says "I find this depiction offensive;" what is the valid opposition position that can state "I'm offended at you taking offense to my racial caricature.."

How does that work, rationally? Who are these people who get worked up over wanting to be able to use a racial caricature as a sports mascot in 2016?

Again, I get nostalgia; great... but let's all at least acknowledge what we're talking about. The mascot is a racial caricature.

I hate the cursive I. Hate the block C more though.

I'm with Lindor. He wants the crooked C 70s uniforms back full time, and I would be down with a modern take on those.
Only if they bring back those red uniforms too!!

We'll, they're doing away with those cream colored uniforms, maybe we get something like that in replace. I'm 100% sure they discuss with players on what they like or prefer. Don't need any Chris Sale shit going on...

Because I think its a shot at the intellect of someone who doesn't mind the logo, and views it as a logo for a sports team, and not an actual representation of an actual Native American...which is exactly what shoes is saying he views it as...a sports logo and only a sports logo.

That's why shoes continues to argue with you on your stance. He is saying he, as well as anyone else who looks at the logo with the current moral compass of a human being in 2016, only views it as a logo, and not an accurate portrayal of a group of people. But you keep detracting that portion of his argument in favor of continuing down the path that the logo only brings up racist feelings, which is obviously false as shoes is showing.

The situation is more broad than "its racist" or "its tradition"...that's the entire point I'm trying to make. Arguing on behalf of removing or keeping the logo for one of those 2 reasons in the quotes is why this discussion is still going on, and no real progress is being made on either side.

I'm all for removing the Chief, I think I've made that point clear with you enough.

But I'd also like to think that the current version of myself is smart enough, and not a giant asshole, to the point where as long as I see Chief while it is around, I will associate it with the Cleveland Indians baseball team, and the baseball team alone.

That is a legit stance people are taking, one that completely differs from the I want to keep it "because of tradition" argument that is the exact opposite of the "remove it because its racist" argument.

As long as its only viewed as that, which it still is, the argument will keep moving in circles...I mean, just read this thread from beginning to now...its literally the same shit just in monthly intervals, and still nothing has changed.

The jersey is available for $100. Maybe just maybe they become a weekend theme...
I grew up in the 70's, i love those red unis.
Those teams were terrible, but had some great guys..Rick Manning, Buddy Bell, Duane Kuiper, Tommy Veryzer, Horace Speed, Oscar Gamble....
