Four Team Deal Sends Howard to Lakers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Beyond the issue of Bynum not extending, this proposal is a great example of why a deal is so hard to get done.

There's no way the Cavs should take on $20 million more in bad contracts than LA, when the Lakers are getting the best player. That needs to be flipped. But LA doesn't seem to have the pieces to do that. Unless they also want to give up Gasol.

Absolutely. Lots of contracts, and big ones, of course. Something like this, which goes even deeper, is even more riskier, possibly.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Those two statements don't make a lot of sense to me. If you believe we're a playoff team without the Bynum trade, then the value of the draft picks we'd be trading is pretty low. And if you believe we still have "gaping holes", how are we supposed to fill those holes with non-lottery picks? To me, if you believe we are a playoff team without Bynum, then now is the perfect time to acquire him, because he's the kind of talent you can't acquire outside the lottery anyway.

Just heard John Ireland, the Laker's play by play guy, on the radio. Seemed really sharp and on top of things, and knows Bynum well. He says the most important thing for Bynum is to get a max deal. Also says that Bynum likes Byron Scott. Anyway, his opinion was that if the Cavs trade for Bynum, Bynum won't sign an extension right away because he oculd only get a shorter deal. But at the end of the season, they'd be the only team able to offer him a max contract, and Ireland felt pretty confidence Bynum would take that. It's not a guarantee, obviously, but it does make sense. And of course, if he didn't want to remain here, we'd still be the only team able to sign him for a max deal, and that would make him a good trade asset.

Certainly, it's rolling the dice. But, it's also true that whatever team trades for him is going to be the team most likely to end up with him long-term, and a Kyrie/Bynum combo can be the core of a championship team. Obviously, Grant and his folks would have to meet with Bynum first to get the sense as to the likelihood of him resigning. But I wouldn't be averse to rolling the dice on this, because Bynum is a talent that doesn't come along very often, and at a level non-lottery teams just can't get in the draft.
This is the exact stance that I'm maintaining.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

he can't say it publicly. He'll be fined. He can talk to people who leak it to the press. It's been reported by members of the press not known to just make things up without a source. And in free agency, the team who he finishes the season with has a major financial advantage in retaining him.

Yes but they are still rumors. The press stretches the truth all the time. You are basically saying if Bynum wouldn't be fined he would say "I want to go to Cleveland," and I'm saying there is no indication of that whatsoever.

The reports from multiple reliable reporters that Cleveland is one of the teams he would like to play for next year are most certainly an indication.

Dwight stays with Orlando because the GM is too hesitant to trade him, and then he is traded at the deadline for 10% of the package they would otherwise have recieved.

Actually I hope Dwight isn't traded at all. That way it leaves the tiny tiny crack in the door open for us to get him in free agency. We are a pretty attractive destination basketball wise with superstar Irving, and hopefully all star DWait.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

strange that I've read a half dozen reports saying he'd like to play here. There are league rules against him being directly quoted saying that.

What rules are those? I don't think there's a damn thing prohibiting a player from coming out and saying "I want to play in Cleveland", or anywhere else. A player can't tamper with himself. To the extent they don't say it openly, I think there are strategic reasons for that.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Isn't Bynum saying he wants to go to Cleveland tampering and is a GM aloud to talk to players who are contracted on another team?

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

with superstar Irving

Let's have players accomplish things before we label them superstars. KI had a great rookie campaign, he hasn't sealed his HOF spot yet. Don't get me wrong, I hope that KI and DWait turn into exactly what you described them as.

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer ‏@SamAmicoFSO

Sides still "far apart" in potential Lakers-Cavs-Magic trade, but not deterred by recent comments from agents

So you are saying there is a chance?

There is no trade. That is why the sides are far apart and the agents have not been contacted about the non-existent trade.

My sources tell me that the Lakers are interested in acquiring Dwight Howard and are willing to let a third team take on as many bad contracts and give up as many assets as it takes to get the deal done. On the issue of extensions for Howard and Bynum; Both players prefer more money than signing extensions.

It sounds like LA can grant Cleveland permission to talk to Bynum if they want to. I think someone (The Bullshit Whisperer, maybe?) said they'd let Cleveland talk to Bynum if the teams agreed on principle, pending speaking with Bynum.

Also, if Bynum wanted Cleveland to know he'd sign an extension, he could get them that info. There are plenty of middle men and info brokers in the NBA.

Dwight sits half the year, is traded to Brooklyn for the Lopez deal at the deadline.

So people asking the agent or Bynum is irrelevant. They will not say yes Cleveland has talked to us. Last thing these players or teams want is a tampering case.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

I think that Kyrie is good enough to get us into the playoffs this year. We still have holes in the roster and that is a fact, but they can be filled in FA and a draft pick if it turnes out that way. But that is just my opinion.

I get that. I just don't think it's enough to have one one superstar/top 25 talent, and build a team around him. I think you need at least two, and I don't think our current roster has anyone who is a good shot to be that second superstar. And if we're making the playoffs, we won't be able to get that second guy in the draft, either. Bynum isn't a hole-filler -- he projects to having a reasonable shot at being a superstar.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying either Kyrie or Bynum is guaranteed to be a superstar. I'm saying that those two guys have a reasonable shot at fitting that title.
