Source: #Cavs prepared to offer Oden a 2 year deal with a team option for a third year after trade deadline

The Cavs are expected to offer free agent center Greg Oden a two-year contract with a team option for a third year after the Feb. 21 trade deadline passes, a league source said.

The Cavs have about $4 million in cap space, which they are preserving now for potential trades. Teams around the league don't want to sign Oden until after the trade deadline.

Oden has visited with the Boston Celtics and could meet again with the Cavs in the coming weeks, his agent said Friday.

Oden is living nearby in Columbus. His agent, Mike Conley Sr., said last week Oden has been to see the Cavs a couple of times already, but was evasive when pressed as to what capacity.

“Greg has been up there (to Cleveland) before and he’ll probably be up there again in an official capacity,” Conley said Friday.

Cavs still aiming to retain 2014-2015 flexibility with that team option if this goes through.

Think about this. He gets healthy and shows signs of being a solid defensive center and rebounder and we are fortunate enough to get a center in the draft this June. Oden would have good trade value going into next summer with that team option!
Even if hw cant afford to keep him in 2014-15, we can still get a something for him

If he never plays a game... you dont pick up the option in the summer of 2014/ no harm no foul!
If gilbert is willing to take the financial risk then why not!

Re: Oden eyes Cavs, Heat

So the two years would be the rest of this year and next year and the option year would be the 2014-2015 season?

If they are talking about offering a contract after the trade deadline, then that's the only way to read it. This year (25 games or so), next year, and then an option year. I'm sure Oden's folks would want a player option or more years/money, and who knows where the Cavs will be salary-wise after the deadline, so there's a long way to go.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

If the Cavs ended up using up the last of their cap space in a trade at the deadline, could the cavs use an exception such as the MLE to sign Oden?

I'm pretty sure Oden won't play before the summer leagues, if he plays at all before October.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

Since the word is out almost 2 weeks in advance..........it probably doesn't happen.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

pr26 is asking what options the Cavs if they use all of their cap space before the trade deadline. Can they then use the regular MLE (not the Room MLE for teams below the cap)?

I know that teams over the cap can use their exceptions (including the MLE) at any point during the year, and they start to pro-rate. We've discussed this before when free agents became available through waivers late in the year. But I am not sure on whether you can activate those exceptions by using all of your salary space mid-year.

One thing Coon mentions is:

"A team's exceptions may be lost entirely, or the team may never receive them to begin with. This happens when their team salary is so low that when the exceptions are added to the team salary, the sum is still below the salary cap. If this happens when the exceptions arise, then the team doesn't get their exceptions at all. If the team salary ever drops below this level during the year, then any unused portions of their exceptions are lost (and do not return if the team salary increases). "

I don't know if the Cavs were ever at that point before taking on Speights.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

Probably, but the room MLE only allows for a two year contract, though.

"ROOM MID-LEVEL EXCEPTION This exception becomes available once the team salary drops far enough that the team loses its other exceptions, and expires following the last day of the regular season."

"
Starting January 10 (February 10 in 2011-12) of each season, the Mid-Level (Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer and Room), Bird (Larry Bird, Early Bird and Non-Bird) and Bi-Annual exceptions begin to pro-rate[SUP]2[/SUP] (reduce in value)."

"
The Traded Player and Disabled Player exceptions do not pro-rate this manner. The Minimum Salary exception also pro-rates, beginning on the first day of the regular season."

No mention of the room level exception pro-rating

I belive we are actually 3 mil under the salary cap. Baron's amnestied contract counts against the floor, but not the cap. I dont think we need an exception.

I can confirm the space

If we do take on more after the deadline, probably only a little more, then we will just use the MLE.

The MLE counts against the cap. I believe the Cavs had to renounce the regular MLE to get enough cap space to float the Speights deal.

It would be pretty bizarre if it was Harangody's guaranteed money that prevent the Cavs from getting Oden.

I understand it counts against the cap, but dont you get the MLE once you go over the cap? I know the amount varies based on tax.
