Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Take a recorder and if a melody pops into the noggin, get it down on permanently bc it doesnt tend to stay up there long

I brought the house down at Mueller College thursday.. packed house cuz someone finally did promotion.. "When I was your Man" by bruno mars went extraordinarily well.. i love that place, monitors are loud so i can hear myself perfectly and I love the sound of my own voice. My guitar sounds like shit. But thats because I tune 6 steps too low. So its like Korn playing an acoustic set. Told my standard joke, deadpan: "I fingered a minor so hard the g string popped.."and then the audience found me on youtube and recorded the performance 'because all my videos look like they were filmed in a turkish prison cell and a new background seemed necessary".

I was sitting outside the coffee shop the other night on my laptop to have an anonymous conversation and overheard a conversation between LeStat's sound guy and an artist... I really had no idea that the acoustic act scene was as prevalent as it really is and I dont know why I havent gotten or tried to get any shows. I need to play lestats more and start networking. As far as performing goes, I need to smooth shit out and emote rather than singing at my songs. I think thats whats separating me from the rest.. and the fact that I cant play guitar

Dave, you may like this Gavin song. It's one of my favorites.

Nicky - love the way he writes, permanently. And sings. Putting finishing touches on 'Im in love with a girl", which will kick serious ass live. Ed sheeran is also good, saw you mention him earlier.

Justin Nokuza was the tail end of when singer songwriters mattered.. I like the way he writes.. I use the same structures, chords, choruses etc.. his voice is genuinely smooth as fuck though.

this dude.. was 18 when he was playing at the same places I was... went on american idol.. now hes on a cruise ship singing, getting paid fat.. amazing performer. The girl is the same age.. cute, and great performer..

I will most likely take more structure from Ed Sheeran vs Gavin. He is actually my favorite artist, right now. I'm actually learning to play one of his songs. Bm is giving me issues. There's been many a time when I wanted to punch a hole, in my guitar. If I had money to get a Gibson guitar, I would have done it, but for my first guitar, I really can't blame it on the guitar..... Just frustrating getting a buzz off of that first string. EVERY DAMN TIME!

I don't know what happened to Muse. Heard "Madness" on the radio, this morning, and couldn't grasp what the hell Matt was trying to convey (lyrically). The beat is good, but it just sounds like something Adam Lambert should be singing. Matt's vocals somewhat remind me of Freddie Mercury, depending on the song.

I seem to find myself gravitating to groups older material. The "hunger" is there, at first, but it seems that there are a lot of groups/solo artists, that once they "make it", the passion is gone. That and the industry stripping away what made them "great' to begin with. They sign multi record deals in a short time frame and end up putting out crap, just to get it over with. Hiatuses, are a good thing. Focus on the quality, not quantity of writing/music.

Muse has been a favorite since I was 15... It's kinda sucked watching them transition, but they just used to write hard rock songs mixed with classical elements. Like everything that came out of the camp was brilliant for awhile. Then they tried doing too much and wrote in too complex a manner and got away from the aggression and simplicity, then 'supermassive black hole' was a hit and they focused more attention on finding dancey radio hits.. But to their defense, thats the way the face of music has changed and theyre to a point just keeping up. Couple of dub steppy songs on the new cd.

For the most part, I really dont like artists newest work. The strokes is an exception; theyve changed but are still good, Julian understands melody.. Im impressed by Linkin Parks ability to reinvent remain relevant.. But I think it just gets to a point where an artist either A. puts out the same shit theyve put out before or B. try too hard to prevent A. or C. naturally progress away from the way they wrote before because they find new influences, music changes etc.. I dont think bands are good their entire careers. I also think, to an extent, we only have so many songs in us to write.

Bands fascinate me, more so than individual music artists, because it makes it so complex, over the long haul. They are each an artist, in their own right. So, how do they come together, collectively, with each member getting their "art" in a song/album? How do they stay positive, if it seems that they are not getting heard? How do they deal with the other egos? How do they maintain "self", without getting lost in what others want?

They have a little Blink 182 in them. First thing I thought was All the Small Things. "Turn the lights off, carry me home..."

I'm listening to this right now. I know it's probably a little mainstream for this thread, but I love Seether. I love the songwriting, riffs, tempo, everything.

And Theory. I wish they would come out with something new. Top5 fav band for me. Pretty much identifies my music genre. And this was on a pretty decent movie, to boot.

I fuckign couldnt stand being in a band. Didn't understand simple concepts like DROPPING the fucking drums to half time during choruses and instead did the opposite, which doesnt make a bit of fucking sense.. These guys couldn't write themselves out of a paper bag and wouldn't listen to a single word I said until it came time to improving upon songs they originally came up with. The songs would all end up being my versions of theres that wouldnt have worked at all if not adjusted extensively. So many fucking power struggles. Drummer was a fucking idiot and ruined many performances by trying to do too much and fucking up unecessary add ons. Lead guitar was into bullshit prog rock like dream theatre and rush and thought if it was more complicated or technical it sounded better. Singer and rythm guitar refused to have an ounce of charisma on stage and refused to write a chorus with any sort of hook or catchy melody or any punch.

I got us a show headlining a wet t shirt contest and when we got there the other three guys said 'they didnt want to wait that long to play'.. so.. they didnt want to be the headliner, and waiting through a wet tshirt contest would just be unbearable. I just dont have the patience maybe. last straw was when we were a day away from the recording studio and they broke up without me being part of the conversation. Couldnt tell you how infuriating that climax was, after dealing with all the other bullshit. Best decision musically I've ever made was to say fuck it and start picking up all the instruments and playing them all myself and performing solo. I get all the control, I get all the attention.

I really think the most succesful bands are those that are run by one person and everyone around them plays the part that was written for htem. Falloutboy, weezer, smashing pumpkins, strokes (to an extent), muse, silverchair.. Because one person's vision is fucked with by the other people and normally not for the better, and its not common that the 3 random people in the band around 1 really talented songwriter are also equally talented at writing songs.

They have a little Blink 182 in them. First thing I thought was All the Small Things. "Turn the lights off, carry me home..."

a and a are a side project of blink
