Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I half watched the Grammy's. The Black Keys came on, and I listened, but didn't watch. I can't even say that I'm a fan of theirs. I tried listening to their songs, and its not even remotely horrible, but they seem to be a reincarnated group (I can't put my finger on who), but they sound so familiar, too me.

I feel as if they are those musicians who really do what they love, and aren't very "hollywood", which IMO, makes them more altruistic, despite me not really being a "fan" of their music.

Patrick Carney took a little shot at Justin Bieber:

I've watched Bieber perform, and I can see where Patrick is coming from. Bieber is a finished product.

Bieber is very aware of the camera, even more so than the performance.
He has also come out and said that The Black Keys' drummer "needs to be slapped around", for his comment. Different genres, and it's all opinion.

Some hate it, some love it.

its apparent that he's been given moves to perform.. not natural. He can either continue to smooth that out or he can become comfortable on stage.

Its like giving a speech: you can either memorize every word/inflection of voice or you can be comfortable with your material and outline and just talk.

need to start standing up and playing and figure out how to put on a show that makes people watch rather than just have a good voice.. Need to write songs that emphasize performance and voice more.. take a page out of prince's playbook

I'm not music instructor/teacher, but you'd get a better sound if you're standing-- Your diaphragm.

I witnessed a street musician and he was standing, singing directly to me; he leaned in closer, etc. I liked that he was pretty much engaged into all of that.

Anyways, I can't get Neon Trees out of my head. I wouldn't even say I'm a fan of their music, but there are some of their songs, in which the lead singer reminds me of Billy Idol, which gives them a bit of a "throwback" element.

--Also wear your yoga pants, when you preform, Dave. I'm sure that'll help, as well. :chuckles:

I started a music blog. I don't know much about blogging and my grammar sucks, but I am finding new things to do besides what I used to do. If linking this is spam, I apologize and will never do it again.

Waiting for news, ANY NEWS on the 2nd Foster The People album. Found none. :(

havent written anything in a year... new song almost finished. chorus came effortlessly, needed a verse so I fit in a chord progression I never ended up using that I wrote when I was 18 and redid all the vocal lines.. Filler lyrics inserted.. Arent bad, but I can do better. Need to decide on tone of song

My journal is almost half full. I've written, a lot, and then just stopped. Wrote a verse, last week. Since I'm in noob territory, I write first, and figure that the music will come later. I mainly write, right before bed. I don't know why, but that's the best time, for me. What I write is pretty f'd up, though.

I know this guy, who lives in TN, who wants to see what I write. He's a music producer, etc. The issue is I'm extremely shy/private with these things. I blow him off, constantly.... As I don't want him to read my words, and take them and do what he wants, with them, OR just know how completely "broken" I am.

Writing is therapeutic for me....Singing, as well-- which most people don't know I do. I dream about melodies, a lot and can never remember where they begin or end. And then I kick myself for being so lazy with finishing learning about writing music.

Dave, I feel like what I like, is what you have. (musically speaking).... but then again, I know more about guitars, than you. How is this even possible?!

I really dont like people looking at my lyrics either, due to both lack of confidence in them and letting strangers in on something you wrote when you were by yourself.

I think if you write with lyrics first youre going to end up with stronger lyrics.. Anthony Kiedis wrote poetry and then fit the music around it and his stuff is lyrically really good. I take more the McCartney approach and look for melodies and then sometimes if a word I sing to hold the tune is interesting, Ill write the lyrics around it. My progressions and hooks sound great, but more attention should be placed on lyrics like youre doing.

PS I started off scared shitless because it was the unknown. I didnt know I could sing until I was 18.. Band broke up so I had to write my own stuff.. My first show was at a retirement home and I couldnt breathe I was so nervous.. I played awfully, forgot all the words and hit a high note at the end which set some poor lady's hearing aid off.. Ill never forget the look of terror.. and then I run off stage and my guitar strap got caught on a wheelchair, so I was stuck there in the room with everyone look at me, wrestling away at a guy in a wheelchair.

point is its all small progressive movements. As far as writing goes, when I first started I tried to incorporate as many 'tools' as possible (bruno mars and also beatles use similar down chord progression is an example, or figuring out what note leads best into the chorus you have planned, finding a way that leads your verse into your chorus that showcases the chorus as best as it can) and then I tried to write the catchiest choruses that make the vocal line and the guitar pop at the right time (gavin degraw, generally) and that took awhile. The most important thing to a song is a hook; figure out what the writers you love do to make their hooks (chord progressions, note and timing of vocal progression in relation to the guitar etc.) and then you can pretty much write exactly like them.

Just write. The really, really good ones write themselves. Like no joke, 15 minutes and the chorus is amazing and the lyrics just work.. You'll think whatever you wrote was great for a few days, and then you think its awful, and then you realize you cant judge it accurately and the people YOU WILL BE PLAYING FOR, NICKY will be the ones to let you know what their favorites are. Plus, if it's not that great, frankenstein that shit and tear out pieces and put them with other pieces that work well. And sometimes a 'bad' song that you write just needs a different tone.. I revisit old songs frequently and rework them into good stuff.

Mark Foster said it will be out at some point this year. My guess is late fall/early winter. He also said it's heavily influenced by the clash.

It doesn't matter though, because MGMT will end the world in june by blowing up the planet with their third album of amazingness.

Basic idea, lyrics are pretty much staying.. verse vocal line is a little different. Not sure if I even want to add a bridge. Its like a good supplemental song.. Doesnt blow up into bombast at any point kind of reminds me of Glen Hansard: All the way down.. partially because the chorus is the same progression, but also follows the same structure and is a good low key song

WEll see if this codes correctly:

If its a British group/singer, I've figured that I'd most likely like them.

C# seems to be my sweet spot, and I realize that Bruno Mars songs are fairly easy for me to sing.
I'm finding that I'm wanting to write, in the middle of the day, while I'm at work. It's like an over load, and I can never remember what it was, when I get home. It's happened the past 3 days. I think I've belted out more singing in one day, than I can ever recall. My voice is extremely irritated, at this point. The lower register is the biggest issue.... And this is what I do in my free-time. But I find that it relieves A LOT of my stress.
