Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I mean the usage rates tell me he doesn't get the ball hardly at all.

He needs to be better at passing the ball out off of offensive rebounds.

I feel like getting the ball back out was something that he was doing better last year. Byron said if you can't dunk it, get it back out. I have been pretty impressed with him finishing through contact this year, or getting the foul, but he needs to get the ball back out to the guards more often as well as reposting. i think the fact that he is not as involved in the offense this year is a reason for the dip in his assists.

Also, just get it to him on the roll to the basket, he is great at finishing.

Unrelated, Noah just got blocked twice by Stoudemire... so Tristan doesn't have to feel that bad. And things are now that bad in Chicago

Still wasn't as good as Bynum's rejection of Noah. That was memorable. Noah has always been a thorn in our side, it was so awesome to see someone else own Noah for once. Actually, he owned him twice.

Boozer made a living off Z's post ups shooting wide open jumpers. I think Bennett is the biggest thing holding us back. If he could play up to his potential, and open up this offense this could be a top ten team on both sides of the ball. As it stands the offense just falls apart too often to mount an effective defense. The points off turnovers in the knicks game would of got us beat against a normal team that actually cared about basketball.

Thompson gets 60 touches a game. little under 30 of those touches in the front court. same amount Dwight howard touches the ball same ratio as joakim noah along with 46 passes per game.

My eyes tell me he gets the ball enough. He's not a guy I would want to have a high usage.

Catching the ball beyond the 3 pt line to swing to the other side shouldn't be considered a "touch" when evaluating how often TT gets a chance to do something on offense. That's probably 15 touches a game, if not more.

This is why those kind of stats are stupid like Kyrie's dribble per second shit.

I thought Tristan was our most effective iso option until Bynum started getting his shots to fall. He can definitely score more than he is. He can run all day, so I would use him in the post when Bynum isn't in there. He definitely has great potential there, so they should be getting him some touches.

30 touches in the frontcourt.. perhaps you dont know where it is but its the same amount of touches in the backcourt. dont you think Theres a reason I included the stat?

Anyways the stat was presented in comparing other big men and how frequesntly they get the ball in reply to usage.

usage in correlation with front court touches clearly indicates Thompson usage rate due to the nature of its measurement is about what he does with those opportunities.

now lets look at usage formula.
Usage Percentage (available since the 1977-78 season in the NBA); the formula is 100 * ((FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV) * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Tm FGA + 0.44 * Tm FTA + Tm TOV)). Usage percentage is an estimate of the percentage of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor.

FGA + FTA + TOV

Thompsons per game is 9.7 FGA 4.7 FTA 1.4 TOV.

thats about 13 of his 30 touches applying towards his usage.

Thompson averages about 46 passes per game. assumong all his full court touches result in passes that 16 passes estimate in the frontcourt.
so 13+16 = 29.

which brings me back to the touches. it shows that its not about how many but what is being done with them.

50% of the time Thompson gets the ball in the front court he is going to pass it

Im sure the other bigs with higher usage but similiar touches would have a much lower passing rate but I dont want to do a comparison. so I tried to keep it simple.

Anyways both your replies have been appropriately refuted... have a nice day

Tristan Thompson's Player Mailbox

Comments: What is your favorite post move to use?
Name: Brady Shoemaker
City: Winston-Salem
State: North Carolina

Tristan Thompson: Right now, it’s the righty hook or my little floater that I like to call “The Mountie.” Someone told me that name during the summer time and I’ve been rolling with it. That’s my shot right there.

-

Comments: If there were an “All-Star Saturday” among the Cavs at Cleveland Clinic Courts, who would win the Three-Point Shootout, the Skills Challenge and the Dunk Contest?
Name: Al Malkin
City: Garfield Hts.
State: Ohio

Thompson: In a three-point shootout, the winner would probably be, well, you’d have to go with Kyrie because he’s the NBA’s actual Shootout champ. In the Skills Challenge, you’d probably have to go with Kyrie again. And for the Dunk Contest, I’d say Alonzo Gee. He’s got the flash. I’m a decent dunker – but I’m a ‘game dunker,’ not a ‘show dunker.’ Two points is two points.

-

Comments: Who is the hardest player to defend against at your position?
Name: Nick Velazquez
City: Avon Lake
State: OH

Thompson: I’d have to say Kevin Love. He’s the hardest guy at my position to guard because he can do it all – shoot 3’s, post-up, rebound, runs in transition to the three-point line. So he’s a tough matchup and every game you have to come out ready to play against that guy.

-

Comments: Hey Tristan, as a 20+ year Canadian Cavs fan, it's been really exciting to see a guy from my area become such a big part of the team. My question is, what do you like to do in Cleveland during your down time?
Name: Ed O'Brien
City: Mississauga
State: Ontario

Thompson: I’m a very simple guy. So it’s either bowling at the Corner Alley or going to the movies and just relax. I’m low maintenance.

-

Comments: So T-Squizzel, You seem to be the funny guy in the locker room, does anyone else have a good sense of humor like yourself on the team?
Name: Joe Gessner
City: Sandusky
State: Ohio

Thompson: It takes talent to have a sense of humor like myself. So, I think me and Kyrie – us being so young and youthful – we have that extra burst of energy to keep the locker room’s energy high and keep guys laughing. Yeah, I’d say probably me and Kyrie.

-

Comments: What is your favorite game console to play when you are on road trips. PS4 or Xbox One?
Name: Ayub
City: Columbus
State: Ohio

Thompson: No, I don’t travel with a game console, but I do play Xbox-1. I play FIFA or Madden. I don’t play basketball games anymore. Ever since I’ve been playing basketball on this level, I don’t play it anymore. The last thing I want to do is play a basketball game.

-

Comments: I've seen you wear Arsenal FC shirts (jerseys) in number of your videos, so iIguess you're an Arsenal fan, and why do you follow them? Are you a big soccer/football fan then?
Name: James Lester
City: Burton on Trent (United Kingdom)
State: Staffordshire

Thompson: I’m kind of a soccer fan, but to be honest, I just like the Arsenal jersey. Really, Barcelona is my team.

-

Comments: Tristan, wuddup?! What's the difference between Ham and Canadian Bacon? Thanks!
Name: Michael Brenkus
City: Cleveland
State: OH

Thompson: Well, it’s actually the same thing. It’s just that Americans call it Canadian Bacon. We just call it ham. Only Americans call it that. I think maybe people get confused because it’s round.

-

Comments: What would you have been if you didn't play any sports?
Name: Pavan Peketi
City: Twinsburg
State: Ohio

Thompson: I’d be a runway model. You can’t teach it – either you have it or you don’t have it. And I’m just a natural.

I always thought of the backcourt as in the half of the court behind the timeline, where the backcourt violation occurs. Silly me, I guess.

He gets 16 touches a game that apply to his usage, that's not much and a huge reason his PER is low. Thanks for backing me up with your "refuting".

Yeah you can't take his Per that seriously. His low amount of blocks hurt it, and not taking that many shots. I understand the rim protector theory, one of which we have now in Bynum, but it seems like your defense is actually better when you stay on the floor like Tristan does. Guys pass it out of the post when they face him all the time, and he doesn't get credit for that. Shot blocking is the last line of a desperate defense, I have been really impressed with Tristan doing his work early.
