Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If this prohibits us from making future moves, this is stupid.

Isn't there conflicting info though? People on twitter saying around 80 mil and Windy said closer to 90 mil. Kind of a big difference.

If we were going to pay him 90 mil, why not let him sign an offer sheet and see if anyone else is willing to pay him so much. I'm interested to see the details of this.

No one was going to give him 80 million. Not letting him get to restricted free agency has to be just to appease LeBron.

I agree. I like what he brings and I'm glad that we could keep him, but this has to catch up with us somewhere. LeBron being his buddy and all, the opposite logic is also true--he should have taken LESS to stay with his pal and compete for championships. No one else would have offered him this type of contract--therefore, we shouldn't have done it. I'd have liked him at 11-12 million/year. If he gets $13 from someone, great---we can match it. I don't see why we jumped the gun and offered this deal. LeBron was never leaving.

Or he signs the qualifying sheet and we lose him as an unrestricted free agent next year. If Gilbert's willing to spend, who cares?

At some point Gilbert will cut off the mad spending though right?
We were so far above the cap, not resigning Tristan really doesn't do anything to hinder future moves.

I agree with your point that the Cavs jumped the gun but I don't see how it hurts anybody or anything besides Dan Gilbert's pockets. The Cavs are already way over the cap so it wouldn't have helped them sign a free agent if Thompson took a few million a year less.

All these long extensions actually make deals easier.

Young players on long contracts can be moved at any time.

We could call any team in the league and move someone like TT or Love fairly easily. Especially when the cap moves.

What you want to avoid is situations like Joe Johnson, where you're paying a guy in his mid 30's 25 million.

I don't know....looking at the yearly salary averages of some of these deals for bigs leads me to believe he would have got close to the same yearly averages.

His first year will start in the 14 million dollar range. Look at what other big men have got:

Brook Lopez (27) - 20 mil per avg
Tristan Thompson (24) - 16 mil per avg
Tyson Chandler (32) - 13 mil per avg
Thad Young (27) - 12.5 mil per avg
Amir Johnson (28) - 12 mil per avg

To me, TT falls where he should on that list. Is it a slight over pay? Sure but someone surely gets in the 14 mil per season range if he pursues an offer sheet. He's a young, durable big coming off the best season of his career.

The new CBA should take care of that for him.

Between that and the raised cap, these deals for Irving, Love, and Thompson are going to be one hell of a value within the next couple years.
