Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Reminds me a lot of the Hot Rod Williams deal. Cavs' third big man (essentially a hustle big) received a (then) overpay offer from the Miami Heat, who wanted him to start. It was too much money, but the Cavs were over the cap and couldn't replace him if he left. So, they were forced to match and overpay the guy. He ended up developing a decently reliable left baseline jumper, which helped, but he was still overpaid.

Best of a bad set of a choices, unfortunately.

I would gladly trade Tristan for Hot Rod, though. Hot Rod, while not the hustle player or offensive rebounder, had the ability to score reliably and protect the basket. He had the frame to defend both PF and C.

Probably. Hot Rod became a decent passer, and that baseline jumper was money.

Cavs extended a qualifying offer to TT just now (sorry if this was already posted) according to my BR team stream

Does it matter so much financially to Gilbert if we win a championship or not though? A deep playoff run and Lebron on the roster produce most of the revenue. Isn't it?

I think it's a bit unfair to judge any of our guys based on those last three games. They all were expending so much effort that the minutes they were asked to play were just too much. And, our lack of bench depth meant that we were basically stuck playing the same style of offense (if you could call it that) from one game to the next. We became incredibly predictable, and guys were forced into matchups that did not show them at their best. In contrast, GSW could sub guys in and out depending upon how things were going so as to get the best possible matchups. That made their entire lineup look better because they were consistently put in matchups designed for them to succeed.

Best example of that was Bogut. Normally, a good player, but the matchups didn't favor him so he got benched and replaced by guys for whom the matchup was much better. We didn't have that option.

Regardless of the last three games, Green is a better player.

Now, who knows what he'll actually get, but if Green does take less money to help the team, I gotta agree, it isn't a good look for Tristan.

That said, I'm not gonna get worked up about it beforehand. I'm doubting very much Green takes less than the max that he can get. Or if he does, it'll only be every-so-slightly less over the course of the life of the contract. He's somewhat of a niche player whose talents might not work on other teams. He needs to get as much as possible while the iron is hot.

Is there a precedent for a team overpaying a restricted free agent. That is, would they pay say 16 million even though they know the best offer was 12 mil a year, just so that they can reward a player or make someone (in this case LeBron) happy?

I'm just wondering if that's what could happen here or if it will simply be an orderly process where the Cavs match the best offer?

Guess my concern is that if we have to keep overpaying for "LeBron's guys" we would have to make up for it somewhere else, say by letting the Haywood contract go for nothing, not re-signing Delly, not using the MLE etc.

It matters to his ego. To a lesser degree it matters to the value of the franchise.

Didn't the Suns essentially do this with Bledsoe last season? If I remember correctly, he didn't have many other options. I thought the Suns just ultimately ended up caving. Maybe the memory is foggy.

I think Pekovic got 5/$60 M after essentially sitting on the market all summer with no activity.

At some point we're talking about major diminishing returns though.

I mean, suppose everyone from last year comes back. At that point, we're already favorites to win the Finals. The team went on a tear 33-3 after the Smith/Shumpert/Mozgoz acquisitions. I mean, honestly, how much better could the team really get? I'm not saying the team's true talent level is 75 wins, but they're still probably the best team in the league.
Not to be a wise guy but, we lost due to a lack of depth. I don't think we're close to diminishing returns yet.

Yup, no one bit on Bledsoe as an RFA and he was on the verge of taking the QO.

So, I don't know where I would find the info, but could TT be the highest paid Canadian NBA player ever when he signs? I seem to remember, correctly or not, that Nash was on cheap deals in PHX.

ESPN sources tell @WindhorstESPN & I that Cavs and Tristan Thompson are nearing agreement on deal that will pay the RFA in excess of $80 mil

$80M is $14 per for 5 with 7.5% raises.

Also means he made $10M over 4 years by rejecting the previous offer and picked up year 5 at $18.2M.....at least.

For now, Wiggins will surely surpass him
