Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Boobie Gibson and Titty Thompson. Make it stick.

Almost makes me want to ignore the fact that I can't stand Boobie Gibson

I thought this yesterday, and then I was wondering what we could possibly want from TOR.

Ultimately, I think we were hoping TOR would pass on him and we would work out a trade with someone lower like Charlotte. I cant help feeling like we tried to get cute and pick up another first rounder and lost out on the guy we really wanted. Immediately after Toronto picked JV, I was thinking to myself, the only way Toronto does a trade like this with us is if they are getting their hands back on their coveted Eyenga.

Byron Scott saying that TT was higher on their board than Jonas is complete poop and a cover up

I think it was an option if JV fell to Charlotte's spot, but like I've been saying, you just don't take that risk unless you're content to end up with the guy you're taking. So I don't think Scott is completely bullshitting. What I'd say is that another first found pick and a lower slotting may have made Jonas more valuable to us than Thompson.

But I like to think the best of other people and assume they're not idiots ... and that's why I'm always trying to make sense of these sorts of moves.

As fans we form clear ideas (right or wrong) about who's better or who's worse, but a smart GM will use their ranking/tier system to help them decide whether they can trade up or trade down without losing value. To get the most out of the draft, you can't fall in love with a player and overpay. It's annoying the fan base, but Grant is not acting like a kid in a candy shop. If you don't like your pick, then move it for a future pick. That's far better than wasting resources bringing in a kid you don't think you'll want to keep.

Again, the criticism of the Thompson choice has less to do with Tristan as a player but more to do with the fact they passed on a legit Center that does the same things Tristan does defensively, plays more premium position, and is better offensively skilled.

You mean they passed on a skinny 7fter they hope will fill out and be able to play center, that happens to be a good rebounder, but not nearly so prolific on the offensive glass, doesn't block shots anywhere near as well, has similar limited offensive skills, is a far far better free throw shooter, but can't sky or run the court as well?

Have I been wrong at any point during this draft process??

Be honest. My analysis has been razor sharp, almost prophet-like.

Admit it...please. Will someone please admit this?

wrong? youve posted you like jonas.
You posted you didnt like some ridiculous rumoured trades.

You havent said anything.. I went through your post because I didnt know who you were and couldnt remember ever reading anything worthwhile.

wait you did say that irving was just as athletic as chris paul. That was a real stretch. now if you define athleticism at the high school level. I suppose but when people talk about athleticism they are comparing to other athletes in the pros. not you. or jill next door but with paid professionals who compromise some of the best athletes in the world.

noone cares how good you think jonas is or was or will be. the cavs didnt draft him. the point is irrelavent. who they did draft was Tristan thompson. and whether they keep him or end up trading him is the only thing people care about at thi s oint.
not how well jonas does in toronto in 2020

Iam sorry I went and took the time to go through post. looking for all these awesome insightful post displaying your omnipresence that certainly werent in your small collection of 109 post one liners.

I was shocked at first, but now am on board with the pick. I watched a lot of videos on TT and I think he has some serious potential (way higher ceiling to me than JJ). He MUST improve his ft shooting and develop at least a threatening jump shot.

I'll wait until we see him play a year or two to absolutely tear the FO a new one... Until then, I'll trust the guys that got us Kyrie in the first place. Even if it was luck that got us the pick, it's better luck than we've had for a while.

People told me for four months I didn't know what I was talking about when in fact I knew more than what they were reading on ESPN, DraftExpress, and anywhere else on the net.

I would think I deserve some kudos here and general recognition as being a valued asset on RCF.

So...this obviously isn't your first screen name -- since the one that you're currently using says that you joined June 2011.

Isn't it an instant re-ban if you start another name after being banned previously?

Bye bye Eli. :gtfo:

In this pic, TT looks about the same size as V.

In this pic, TT looks about the same size as V.

And Leonard and Derrick look exactly the same height. Tristan does look a little taller. Maybe he grew a couple inches?

He also looks like the most athletic guy there. We can only hope.

From the videos I saw, I think TT has a better chance of success in the NBA than Jonas.

Weak Draft- Jonas goes #5. Normal Draft Jonas might go late lottery to early 20's.

Some similarities between Thompson and Ed Davis of the Raptors. If Thompson can have a similar rookie year then I have no regrets over the pick.

Thompson was a high school teammate of Samardo Samuels, who is thrilled to be reunited with an old friend. Samuels has been in town working out since the season ended and he watched Thompson’s first workout against Enes Kanter.

“Tristan was way better (than Kanter),” Samuels said. “He was the best guy at the power forward spot they worked out.

Samuels was including Arizona forward Derrick Williams.

“He was cool,” Samuels said. “But I liked Tristan. His energy level is unbelievable. It seems like he don’t know no better but to just play hard. That’s good for him.”

General Manager Chris Grant said the Cavs have been scouting Thompson since high school. Although a few skeptics around the league believe the Cavs reached on Thompson with the fourth pick, Grant disagrees.

“We actually had him ranked much higher than fourth,” Grant said.
