Tristan Thompson: Initial Thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So...this obviously isn't your first screen name -- since the one that you're currently using says that you joined June 2011.

Isn't it an instant re-ban if you start another name after being banned previously?

Bye bye Eli. :gtfo:

Stop responding to the guy. The mods will take care of this screen name just like the other 6 he's been banned on.

My initial thoughts on TT...
I hope for the Cavs sake Thompson turns out to be a good pick. He seems rather limited as the number 4overall pick but like I said I hope I am wrong. If he can provide strong interior defense, the ability to be difference maker with block shots, and an aggressive rebounder he is worth the pick.

I am shocked we were not able to pull off a deal to get another 1st rounder. I thought the Cavs would be crazy active, they probably were on the phones but nothing materialize. I'm shocked sessions is still on the team. I thought for sure he would be gone by today. TT probably means JJ is gone by the deadline. Hopefully we can land decent picks and or a starting wing player.

In this pic, TT looks about the same size as V.

He also looks like the most athletic guy there. We can only hope.

Really catfish? Are you just ignoring the old midget with the rock in his hand? That dude clearly must be pretty athletic to be that old and get picked in the lottery.

“We actually had him ranked much higher than fourth,” Grant said.

I call shenanigans on that quote. Clearly they had Irving #1 so he could have been no higher than #2. That is not much higher than #4. Saying they had him "much higher" is a poor attempt to end the discussion. The appropriate response should have been that we had him rated higher than Jonas because that is where the criticism has been directed.

Again I'm going to say it again. Tristan Thompson is going to be a really nice player. Once he gets on the court and he is balling his ass off especially on defense all the haters will be in love with him ala Andy Varejao. Personally after watching Drew Gooden and JJ Hickson I can't wait to see a PF in a Cavs uniform that can actually defend and has a brain and quiet possibly have that same player be a threat offensively(with some work obviously). I know somebody brought up the comparison of Tristan Thompson to Josh Smith but with a brain and better defense. I myself bring up Serge Ibaka. You mean to tell me nobody would want either Josh Smith(with a brain) or Serge Ibaka? I understand not at 4 in the lottery but it's been well known that this was a weak draft.

Let's just hope A) we can pick up a big man like Marc Gasol and/or B) Jonas Valanciunas falls flat on his face. :hide:

A rather unique take on Tristan Thompson, printed in the Toronto Star and written by....his Mom. I'm sure Tristan is going to get some serious grief from all his friends. :chuckles:

How did GTA star Tristan Thompson get to the NBA? Ask Mom

It’s 19 hours after the dream came true and I’m still numb.

That was my son, Tristan Thompson, putting on the cap of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team Thursday night, shaking the hand of commissioner David Stern, doing just what he told me he would when he was just 10 years old.

He had made it to the NBA. A first-round pick. Chosen No. 4 overall — drafted higher than any other Canadian-born player since 1953, and selected to play in the world’s greatest professional basketball league.

And that was me, his mom, on television in the background at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., in the Green Room with the golden locks and the smile as bright as the sun.

Didn’t my boy look handsome, man? I tell you. . .

I used to tell him, “Academics come first. Without the books, you can’t get to the ball.” He’s an A student. He left University of Texas after his freshman year to pursue his hoop dream. When the door of the NBA opens, you have to walk in.

Tristan is the type of kid where, he only needs the door to open a crack and he’s in. When he was young, people kept telling me, ‘Your son is special. He’s a basketball player. He’s coachable. He’s a leader.’ So I just support my son. He always tells me he just needs me to be his mom, so I’m just there to give him a pillow to lay his head on.

You can’t have doubt. I believed in Tristan.

He is the kind of kid that knows what he wants and will fight to get it. So when he told me he wanted to go south to play with tough competition and get more exposure, I said, “Go for it.”

Sacrifices I had to make?

It was fun, really. We went all over the place to watch him play. I would take off work three days at a time, losing money I didn’t have, but you have to support your kids.

Trevor and I took the kids all over the U.S. for AAU tournaments and many times we were the only parents. You can’t leave your kids to other people. Coach Ro Russell was great. He had good contacts. But we had to be there, too.

Where does Tristan get his drive from?

I guess he watched his mom and dad. Trevor is a truck driver. I drive a school bus. We work hard. In life you have to work hard to receive your blessing, everybody knows that. I never had it easy as a child. I didn’t have to tell Tristan anything to empower him. Tristan saw us always working hard, and he wanted to get ahead.

Setbacks? A few. But many comebacks.

When he had a falling out with the coach at St. Benedict’s Prep school, immediately God opened another scholarship at Findlay Prep in Nevada and look how it worked out — for the better.

What do dream-seekers need to know, especially that basketball kid in the projects, watching TT reach his goal at age 20?

Keep going. Don’t look back. Keep fighting. If that means you have to walk to the gym, walk.

We are at the press conference introducing Tristan to the people of Cleveland and I have one message.

It’s June 24 and Tristan Thompson is coming to Cleveland to change the fortunes of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was chosen for this time. You guys will see it and read about it.

Or we sign JV away from the Raptors after they spend 4 years developing him and waiting for his body to mature ;)

Seems like a nice, soft spoken guy from the couple interviews today. I almost started getting the impression he might be uhhh... you know.... Nothing wrong with that though. Just sayin.

Edit - Also just wanted to let you guys know what the great Skip Bayless thinks.... He said Thompson is Dennis Rodman w/o the baggage.

Just because you want to fuck him doesn't make him gay:chuckles: ..it makes you gay... GTFO here with that weak ass shit.

Wow. So impressed with both Kyrie's and Tristan's parents. These are two people who have a strong support system and loving family. Those things make a difference. Not to get to deep in the psychology, but the difference in where Kyrie and Tristan are coming from and what they had provided for them as far as discipline and strong example versus what "you know who" had is stark and glaring. Almost makes me feel sorry for "you know who" for a second. Nah. I take that back

Well it seems like we got two genuinely good guys who will appreciate playing in Cleveland. They seem like the type of players who value a cities passionate and loyal fanbase over its nightlife. These are the types of guys Clevelanders love. If they are able to play up to their potential I think in a few years we will have a TEAM that is loved much more by the city than the Lebron era Cavaliers were.

Or he could just be a positive and happy person. There is nothing wrong with that either.

All I know is when he's on the court and in the paint he plays his ass off and is tough as nails.

r watching Drew Gooden and JJ Hickson

Hope you are right in about everything else you said. This made me laugh just cuz after drafting Kyrie I was drinking beers with a bunch of guys in a golf league I joined (mostly for networking). These guys were already hammered and after about 20 mins I realized it didn't matter how much I'd read about any pick, so I just went with "Do you want to see Kyrie irving bouncing passes off of JJ's face? (and actually also mentioned Gooden)". Then when Tristan Thompson got picked everyone was like floored, and I just hoped he'd be a guy who can at least catch the ball as he runs towards the basket. Didn't bother defending that one. Even though I personally was interested in him. These were like Browns fans no even casual cavs fans. Just thinking about conversations I had about Gooden when he was here make me laugh thinking back, including the times at the game I could see Lebron yelling at him, and basically making fun of not just his BBall IQ but well asking my friends (who know their stuff) for speculation about the soul patch he started on the back of his head. I thought it was going to be a pony-tail but he kept shaving it. We had plenty of hilarious theories back then.

I've warmed up to TT a bit, but I can't shake the feeling that Jonas is going to be the better player. And it's already hard enough to find a center. But maybe I talked myself into Jonas, but I just feel like we missed an opportunity to start out rebuild with solid franchise players at the 1 and the 5, which are the hardest positions to fill.
