Kings Staying Put (was Sonics coming back)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Kings Staying Put (was Sonics coming back?)

Terrible news. Fuck the NBA.

How is it terrible, that is a top 5 fan base in sports not just the nba. They were screwed over again and again by the magoof brothers , they selled out the arena for 7 straight seasons till they saw what the maloofs were doing. Relocation had no chance of happeing cause sacramento only had to prove they had fan support, good new owners, and a new arena they did that and more

Wow, Kevin Johnson is going to be one powerful force in California politics after this. This was his baby. He married a woman who has a lot of money behind her in Michelle Rhee, but her political star had fallen for some very questionable stances in Washington DC schools. She is likely to be facing a lawsuit soon. So now NBA owners have been convinced that walking away from more money to "do things the right way" in Sacramento... it seems like there was some sort of bigger political tradeoff for Stern and Kevin Johnson, I just don't know what it is yet.

Re: Kings Staying Put (was Sonics coming back?)

Listen, it's just different for me because, and this may sound stupid, but when I was a kid, I used to pick the Sonics all the time in any N64 basketball game, so I've always had this sort of... connection to Seattle. I feel shit on, and I'm not even that emotionally involved in it like actual die-hards.

I don't know about everyone else here, but I think you deserve a key to the city.

You know what? Why don't we re-summarize what exactly went down with this whole saga, hm?

They had some decent years fly by and then a team ferociously backed by almost an entire region of North California. They're support despite the setback is easily as powerful as a certain team that plays football in a forgotten city by an Erie lake (no, not Buffalo). Then the Ma-DOOFS go down under with their bad business and attempt to save their goddamn asses to a past franchise.

Not the same as our original Browns. But pretty close.

After the back and forth done to get the team moved, a city backed by a strong-willed major, and former basketball all-star, continued to negotiate at the table to save a team unwillingly "plucked".

There's a strong sense of sympathy of what our Northern Pacific Region friends went through with this shit, what their broadcasts sounded like, and how gut-wrenching it must've felt...

There is no bullshit. We shouldn't complain about this. This might be a small hint of future karma coming our way. Congrats to Sacramento. I hope the package gets finalized soon.

One note I should say, I am guessing the NBA is gonna use this Sacramento Ownership Group/Coalition of Fans as an example of keeping a team where it is when its being relocated. Show enough support, show them investors who are interested, show them an arena plan. Have a fanbase that does everything in its power to help and you can beat the Goliath that people say David can't beat.

This is the first time that I've ever seen a move of this magnitude blocked. I am frankly still shellshocked and overjoyed that everything fell into place. I guess now I know what you guys went through with the Cleveland/Baltimore move.

Speaking of that. I think you may actually get your pick sooner rather than later with New Owners/GM. Hint Hint :)

I'm in favor of whatever side is using the least amount of public money to build an arena/whomever is screwing over the taxpayers the least. I think this is Seattle, but I'm not 100% sure.

It is. Seattle is funded by that Microsoft money. Sacramento... taxpayers, taxpayers and more taxpayers.

So the Maloofs have to sell this team now right? I mean, what fan in Sacramento will support them. The best thing for the franchise is for the Maloofs to cash out, because they financially need to, and sell to a local guy who will invest in the team and not use the team as their financial security blanket.

The sale with the Seattle group is still pending. Plenty of options left.

All it takes is 1 vote from one of the other 23 owners that didn't vote to block the sale. Even if relocation is approved (which it won't be most likely) they still have to gain the right to buy the team.

Basically this is over unless Hansen and Ballmer go the scorched earth method and try suing, they aren't going to get the Kings when the Owners on a united front won't approve the sell.

Not really. If the NBA rules that the team is staying in Sacramento, I doubt there's much incentive for them to buy the team.

While we are disappointed with the relocation committee’s recommendation, we just wanted to let you all know that we remain fully committed to seeing this transaction through. As you are all well aware, we have a binding transaction to purchase the Kings for what would be a record price for an NBA franchise, have one of the best ownership groups ever assembled to purchase a professional sports team in the US, have clearly demonstrated that we have a much more solid Arena plan, have offered a much higher price than the yet to be finalized Sacramento Group, and have placed all of the funds to close the transaction into escrow. As such, we plan to unequivocally state our case for both relocation and our plan to move forward with the transaction to the league and owners at the upcoming Board of Governor’s Meeting in Mid-May.

When we started this process everyone thought it was impossible. While this represents yet another obstacle to achieving our goal, I just wanted to reassure all of you that we have numerous options at our disposal and have absolutely no plans to give up. Impossible is nothing but a state of mind.

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ―Muhammad Ali

I havent followed recently but it would appear to me that after "sonicsgate", both what happened and the damning documentary, the nba will try to limit franchise relocations by owners beholden to different cities, and cities fighting over teams. While they do like to capitalize by having cities bid against each other for teams that offer very little benefit to their cities, they also can alienate people long term if they have too many "scandals", and look greedy. Im not surprised.

Great for Kings fans, a shame for Sonics fans. Luckily for Seattle, however, there are a few teams that look like they could be headed towards the relocation route within the next few years (the Hornets/Pelicans and the Bobcats come to mind).

Problem is everything is against him getting the team, I honestly don't know what he can do at this point. The sale is getting rejected. Ranadive is going to put in 50% in Escrow to the NBA as requested by Friday, and it seems 99% certain that the Owners will reject the sale and relocation on the spot. Unless he is trying legal action. Or he is trying to go the Clay Bennett method of moving a team, which would still not work.
