Will the Cavs get caught in the Ferry undertow?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Maybe Chris Grant?? Remember Deng was supposed to be a leader and then within weeks of him coming here he was already grumbling, all while having a spotless reputation.

As long as it's no one currently employed by the Cavs, it won't really impact us.

Based on all the interviews I've read with Grant, though, that doesn't really seem like his handiwork. Of course, maybe he's a huge racist behind closed doors. Who knows?

I found this line from Zach Lowe's article hilarious.

“We have too many black people at our games. How can we get more white people?” You would not see an NBA owner ask the reverse question with such blunt urgency.

Really? Cause that exact question is asked daily in businesses around the country. It's a question that regularly pops up in policy debate in legislatures around the country. "How can we get more black people to participate/consume/etc."

Levenson should not be selling because of that e-mail.That's a joke.

I'm really sick of the authoritarianism coming from NBA media types, etc...Now granted I'm used to Italian soccer where pretty much ANYTHING goes but still. It's almost as if no dissenting opinions are allowed. Even with these deplorable comments, you have people trying to make what are meant to be private emails and conversations public. Really unacceptable.

I am telling you guys while Grant made some great trades there has to be a reason why the team gave up on him.... He re hired Mike Brown. No really I think Ferry and Grant where he came from... the Hawks Organization and Ferry went there? The team quit on Grant and Brown. Now we have Griffin, Blatt, and LeBron who seems to care this time around?. t think Ferry is still butt hurt by Shaq in the infamous photo.

Here's a bit from Woj's latest article.

The Hawks never had a chance to get Anthony, but free agent Luol Deng had been a distinct possibility. Eventually, the Hawks made two offers to Deng – two years, $20 million, or one year, $10 million – league sources told Yahoo Sports. Around the discussions between the Hawks and Deng, several sources told Yahoo that within the basketball operations, Ferry was Atlanta's biggest proponent to sign Deng.

Ferry never did persuade Deng to take the offer, and yet still he'll forever be connected to him. Once he started talking on the call about Deng, it wasn't long before Ferry marched himself directly into a foolish, ignorant riff of African stereotypes. On and on, Ferry started about how Deng "has got some African in him" and proceeded to make a comparison to Africans with phony facades selling counterfeit goods.

As soon as those words left Ferry's mouth on the call, Gearon responded in a dramatic way in the background of the tape recording, according to a partial transcript of the call obtained by Yahoo Sports.

"Oh my God, that comment sounds like Sterling on TMZ," Gearon said.

Gearon didn't stop Ferry. He let him keep talking. In the transcript, Ferry detailed the information he'd gathered on Deng. Ferry attributes those characterizations – and inappropriate phrasing – to outside sources.

On Deng, Ferry said: "… For example, he can come out and be an unnamed source for a story and two days later come out and say, 'That absolutely was not me. I can't believe someone said that.'

"But talking to reporters, you know they can [believe it]."

Ferry kept going on Deng: "… Good guy in Chicago. They will tell you he was good for their culture, but not a culture setter. He played hard and all those things, but he was very worried about his bobble-head being the last one given away that year, or there was not enough stuff of him in the [team] store … kind of a complex guy."

Ferry's clinging to the story that the racially charged words belonged to someone else – that a riff connecting Africans to a con man stereotype weren't his words at all. In context of the transcripts, it appears that those had been Ferry's own interjections on the call, somehow supporting the intel culled outside of the Hawks.

Still no mention of Cleveland at all in any of Woj's reporting. So I doubt any of this came from us really. It just sounds like Ferry is trying to place blame somewhere away from himself.

It sounds from the article though that it definitely could have been attributed to us. The sentiment that he was two faced that is. The African in him sounds like ferry came up with that

You could've left that last part out. Might be funny to you, but not funny to others considering the context of the story.

The context of the story is that Ferry read a culturally insensitive remark out loud to a group of people. I'm guessing you're as related to Africa as I am to Amsterdam.

Don't confuse culturalism with racism.

The consipracy theory here is inside the Hawks organization.

I can't find it now, but there was some insinuation on Twitter that one of the other 6 people in the ownership group may have brought it to the surface. Apparently there is a lot of bad blood within the group.
Ba-Bam. Who called it? This guy. ;)

The part below from the Wojo article sounds similar to what happened shortly after Deng got to the Cavs. NY papers (Daily News, I think?) published inside info on the Cavs mess and attributed it to someone very close to Deng. Deng then denied all of it. I think it happened more than once (with Deng cited as the source) but my memory could be wrong.

Ferry may have his job now, but it's hard to see how he survives in Atlanta for the long-term. Terrible judgment, even if he was in the midst of a bad ownership situation.

You'd be guessing wrong. More than half of my family resides on the continent of Africa. Nice try though.

Ferry has been a great GM for Atlanta, and fixed a bad roster situation. Whatever the fallout, I think this is a scapegoat situation for the owner. Not excusing his comments, but I think this doesn't come to light without the the owner Levenson running his mouth and losing the franchise.

Oh, and it isn't racial to say Deng is two-faced... too many reports out of Cleveland have confirmed that as a non-racial and personality consistent trait. Sorry, that part isn't racist... it appears factual.

It's not racist to say he's two-faced. It's racist to say that he has some African in him and have that imply that he's two-faced. If you removed the "he's got some African in him" line, the statement Ferry made isn't racist at all. But Ferry didn't remove that line. To be honest, I'm not really sure why that line was in a scouting report to begin with. If you think Deng is two-faced, just write that in the damn report.
