Will the Cavs get caught in the Ferry undertow?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

I love that Ferry heaped all the blame on a nameless scout. If I were the NBA, I'd demand to know who actually wrote that line so that they could be disciplined appropriately. Call Ferry's bluff and see if the trail leads back to him.

I'm confused but it sounds like Danny Ferry read some info on documents that were found during a probe in fron of Hawks officials? After hearing the comments, those who we in attendance misunderstood what Ferry read and thought they were his thoughts. When in reality he was reading what Levenson wrote correct?

Not clear at all whose words Ferry was reading. I just hope they didnt come from someone associated with the CAVS which would sound very likely.

why would the cavs do a scouting report for the hawks?

Ferry got the information from somewhere and Deng had been with us most recently.

Gearon wrote the letter after Ferry, on a conference call with management and ownership, described free agent target Luol Deng “he has a little African in him, not in a bad way, but he's a guy who would have a nice store out front, but sell you counterfeit stuff out of the back."

So that's what he meant I guess.

I love how he prefaces a horribly racist description by saying "not in a bad way."

He probably got it from a scout on the Hawks or something. Nothing from the Cavs.

Ferry apologized Tuesday but said he was only repeating comments he had heard about Deng.
"In regards to the insensitive remarks that were used during our due diligence process, I was repeating comments that were gathered from numerous sources during background conversations and scouting about different players," Ferry said in a statement released by the team.

"I repeated those comments during a telephone conversation reviewing the draft and free agency process. Those words do not reflect my views, or words that I would use to describe an individual and I certainly regret it. I apologize to those I offended and to Luol, who I reached out to Monday morning."

In his letter to Levenson, Gearon compared Ferry's remarks to comments made former Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was forced to sell the team this year when his racist comments were disclosed.

"We believe these comments by Ferry were far worse than Sterling's because they were not from a private personal conversation -- they were in a business environment on a business matter in front of a dozen or more people," Gearon wrote. "If Ferry would make such a slur in a semi-public forum, we can only imagine what he has said in smaller groups or to individuals."

Gearon also said in the letter that he wanted to point out Ferry's comments to Levenson because he wasn't sure Levenson was listening to the full conference call. Gearon said his belief, confirmed by his consultations with two attorneys, was the fallout from Ferry's comments could be "devastating."

Gearon warned Levenson he believed Ferry's comments "could be fatal to the franchise" if made public.

As a gesture of sincere contrition, Danny Ferry has offered to smooth over any ruffled feathers by performing "Mammy" in black face at the next NAACP convention.

(That last line is my addition, ferry didn't say that)

How do you know. The reporting has said it came from outside the organization.

You could've left that last part out. Might be funny to you, but not funny to others considering the context of the story.

I just don't think it would come from the Cavs at all. It could've came from the Bulls.

Read in the context of coming from the Cavs, it could mean that he put up a public air of professionalism and leadership, but was a locker room distraction and was constantly bad-mouthing the team to the press behind closed doors.

Obviously we don't know if it came from the Cavs and it probably didn't, but if it did that would be how I read it.

The real question is, if that's what was meant by the statement, why not just say it in those exact words? Why make it about race to begin with when it clearly didn't need to be? I would have had no idea what they actually meant by him having "some African in him" until the rest of the quote was reached, and I'm still not entirely sure what it means exactly. If you think Deng is a hypocrite who pretends to be a professional when he's really not, just fucking say that.

Yeah, the whole compiled by outside sources thing is shit.

I take large chunks of information and make executive summaries all the time. I would never put something like that in any summary I give at our directors meetings.

For instance, if somebody says we need to hire a bunch of Mexicans for cheap labor, I'm going to summarize that we need to investigate alternative approaches to labor availability and update our recruitment strategy to target the modern construction workforce.

It was Ferry's job to summarize the report to the ownership group. Even if he got that information in that format, it is his responsibility how he presented it.

All that said, still sounds like one of the owners had an axe to grind and was looking for something. We probably still don't have the full story.
