Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He does do some things well - make wide open shots at a good clip, not turn the ball over, and try hard on defense. But he's still a major liability in a championship rotation. And we don't need another backup SG, we need a backup PG who can actually put pressure on a defense OR guard opposing PGs well. Delly can do neither of those things.

I still hope to hell he isn't our only option at backup PG next year, but I do hope he's still on the roster. He's a great end of the bench guy that can be used in certain situations.

The team will most likely use their draft pick to draft a backup PG.

I actually think in a we'd be better off using our pick on a wing/big with some upside. There are decent backup PGs available for cheap because of the depth at the position, and I'd also prefer to have a guy with some experience. I'm not a sure a late 1st round rookie PG is a guy we want in that role. A guy like Jeremy Lin would be perfect, though I don't know if we'd be able to afford him with the MLE or whatever exceptions we have. Other names: CJ Watson, and *gulp* Mo Williams. I'm sure there are others out there as well.

I would keep an eye on Barbosa as well. He's got ties to Griff and Andy, and can play the position well enough.

How do you propose to get a backup PG without the draft? We'll most likely be capped out and need everyone on our roster.

What I keep coming back to this season is that Delly has great strengths that help a team at the end of the rotation, but he needs the right players around him when he is on the floor. When Delly was matched with Kyrie, LeBron or last year Dion, there is a strong dribble penatrator on the floor masking his lack of ability in that capacity. Delly can run a motion offense because he plays well off the ball and is a great passer, but his lack of NBA footspeed will always mean he needs the right match in the back court. He makes the team better when he plays, but he needs a Dion-like partner coming off the bench rather than other 3 and D players.

That's what kills me about leaving Shump in the backcourt with him instead of JR, but I guess JR can't be both places at once. :dunno: JR's hair-trigger release alongside Delly would mask his footspeed/shortcomings, and also open up the airspace around him for those shove-shot/layup things he does. He made a crap ton of them last year, because of the attention on his backcourt mate (Dion, at the time)

Let me preface this by saying that I do not believe that he should be Delly's replacement, but Aaron Craft plays defense the way a lot of people THINK Delly plays defense.

I have no doubts that Delly could be doing stuff like that in the talent deficient D-league.

That ball denial on Lowry is, in my opinion, more impressive than stripping the ball from the sub-Will-Cherry-level ball-handlers in the D-league.

Not to mention denying a center the ball in the post. The guy just never takes no for an answer.

The guy costs nothing. He's not a liability, in fact he seems to be a specialist at getting the Cavs back into ballgames with his energy & hustle. A glue guy the team loves to have around. Happy to play his role and do anything asked of him.

I'm not disputing the want of a seasoned vet at PG, especially going into playoffs, but this kid has a place on this team. This is a better team by giving him 10 -15 mins a night.

The uncomfortable issue with Delly is the reflective one. He gets 100% of what he has on the floor night after night and costs little. He hustles, does the small things to help his team win and is focused solely on team work ... so why are others on the team, who are paid so much more not doing the same?

Because if Delly doesn't do those things, he's out of the league.
