Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Since there has not been a braying crowd calling for his I assume Delly played a serviceable game?

Because if Delly doesn't do those things, he's out of the league.

If 90% of players in the league gave that level of effort they would also be secure in the league.

In the first two playoff games Delly has not missed a shot or turned the ball over. He has a positive Net +/- over his 18 minutes even though Boston is not a great match-up for him. But still some fans are screaming for the lowest paid Cav to be axed. But Dellys low contract provides huge value by allowing us to pay bigger $ to others in the roster. He also provides huge value to the team on and off the court but I guess some people are never happy and have to find something to whinge about. Good grief......

Have to take into account the minimal minutes he is playing. Kind of stacking the deck in his favor when he's only taken 2 shots and played 18 total mins in 2 games. I say we let a few more games play out before we start talking about not missing shots or turning the ball over.

Just out of curiosity what is the huge off the court value?

Work ethic, leadership and basketball IQ. Probably should be getting paid as an assistant coach. Not to mention he seems to be present at nearly every charity day at which the Cavs send players.

Who is whining? I never saw any complaints in the game thread or in here since the playoffs started. He's been playing his role well.

Delly is what he is. He's helping the team but I think he looks better if the Cavs have someone off the bench who can get to the hoop, distribute, and (efficiently, not Waiters style) get his own shot. If they're going to keep him I think they can use a combo guard with these skills. The bench is all offensively-challenged players or guys who have one skill and have to be set up for a shot by someone else.

All year, Delly has been a great backup point guard against veteran or taller PG opponents. He plays less minutes at shooting guard when matched up against the smaller, quicker point guards of the league. Isaiah Thomas is the archetype point guard that Blatt doesn't play Delly against. This is why the Cavaliers explored trades at the deadline, but this is the playoffs. Teams will push the Cavaliers every game like their entire season hangs in the balance, and the good guys might lose a game or two per series.

This team isn't a finished product yet. There was only so much that could be done in one off-season and trade deadline. Delly is/was the best they could do under these circumstances, and I am resigning myself to this fact and accepting it for these playoffs. Delly doesn't amaze but he also doesn't screw up, so it could be worse, I guess.

If Delly is still the back-up PG next year, I will be very disappointed. This team needs a second PG on this roster, that if KI goes down or if KI and LBJ aren't on the floor, can both run an offense and create his own offense off of the dribble.

I agree generally with what you're saying here but haven't seen the leadership aspect. Do you have specific examples for that? To me it seems like he's deferring to LeBron and Kyrie's leadership as well as Blatt's (thank god at least one of our players will listen to a coach)

Simply by this: going balls to the wall on defense and hustling and doing the dirty work on offense, every single possession. LeBron sure as hell sees that; that play where Delly saved the ball from going out of bounds that led to the 3pointer that JR Smith hit against the Bulls was as perfect example as you can get. LeBron shaking his hands afterwards was perfect.

That's leading by example as a player, whether you're a superstar or role player.

I could see us drafting a PG and sticking him in the D league for a while. This would let us keep developing and showcasing Delly (which should increase his trade value, and give him a chance to prove he's worth the backup role).

However, I think another backup center may be more important. Perkins is done after this year, and there's no telling if AV will ever make it to another post-season. I would rather have a solid 4 big man rotation than a 4th PG (yes, I consider LBJ to be one of our PGs)

Agree on plan 2. Lebron is a way more capable PG than C if he has to be one or the other. Although when I daydream about Bron playing C Magic-style in a playoff pinch I get all excited.

It's a fair question as it may not be so visible in Cleveland. But he captained his College team as a Junior and led St Mary's to its first time win of the WCC in both regular and post season. He led the Australian National Team in games at 23 years of age and also was noticeably leading the Cavs most recent Summer League squad (so much so that they tanked when he left the squad for Australian duties). I think the fact that he can change the pace of the game with both his energy or slowing the tempo shows that other more experienced players feed off him.
Probably his best value is getting young talents like Joe Harris to follow his lead with training. I can see more talented rookies really developing under Dellys attitude and leadership.
His influence is amazing in such a talented squad, especially for a an undrafted player in his 2nd year.
