Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hey Windy --- 5.1.15
http://stationcaster.com/player_skinned.php?s=70&c=18273&f=4331073

01. Kevin Love saw Cleveland Clinic's shoulder specialist, Dr. Schickendantz. Supposed to be one of the best shoulder experts in the country. Did not sound like Love would have surgery after this appointment. Then Love went to see Dr. David Altchek, who is one of the up and coming sports orthopedic doctor guys. He's in New York. He's replacing the aging Dr. James Andrews for many athletes' surgeries now.

02. Kevin Love's agent is Jeff Schwartz. All of Schwartz' guys tend to go to Dr Altchek for surgeries.

03. Altchek was the second opinion for Love, and obviously Altchek felt Love needed surgery.

04. I wonder if the Cavs wished Love would have delayed the surgery for a bit, with like a 1% chance he could have come back in this playoff run.

05. The injury to Love was not a basketball play. The arm was pulled out of its socket. There's no real defense for it.

06. The Bulls looked awesome last night, in Game 6 against the Bucks.

07. The Bulls are going to be a formidable opponent.

08. I think the Bulls are the second most talented team in the East, behind the Cavs.

09. At this moment the Bulls are fully healthy.

10. There are many people who believe the Bulls now have the edge on the Cavs.

11. I believe the Cavs still have the edge over the Bulls.

12. I would probably pick the Cavs in 6-7 games.

13. Biggest issue is no JR Smith in the first two games. Bulls could steal homecourt advantage in first two games.

14. It's probably expected that the series is 1-1 going back to Game 3 in Chicago.

15. Cavs have had 1 week to prepare, though. That should help them.

16. Bulls series is a golden opportunity for David Blatt.

17. Blatt may be able to put in more of his offense with the injuries to the Cavs. This could surprise the Bulls.

18. I think the Cavs have the most talent in this series. Others disagree with me.

19. The Bulls say they are healthy, but I think they are banged up.

20. The Bucks stopped guarding Noah in that series, at times.

21. Bucks focused on slowing down Gasol and played off Noah. And it worked a lot.

22. Cavs may be able to take advantage of Noah's offensive struggles, and his bad knee.

23. Mirotic is banged up with a knee injury as well, right now.

24. What you will hear between now and Monday is "big men, big men, big men. How will the Cavs defend the big men?" This is what you will hear discussed.

25. I'm not sure that the Cavs-Bulls series will be determined by the big men. Bulls perimeter players are key.

26. I voted for Butler as Most Improved Player.

27. Rose had a good series against the Bucks. He was up and down. He was better when there was 2 days of rest. That won't be the case against the Cavs (there won't be any games that have 2 days off before the game).

28. Dunleavy was good against the Bucks.

29. You can't allow Butler to shoot 50%.

30. Cavs must stay out of foul trouble, especially with JR Smith out. Because of shaky depth with JR Smith out.

31. I don't like the idea of Marion guarding Butler. I'd rather have Marion guard Noah.

32. LeBron will be required to defend inside, so he won't be available to guard perimeter players as much.

33. Bulls are not as good defensively as in previous years. This is because Pau Gasol is not a good defensive player now.

34. Teams attack Gasol in pick and roll match ups.

35. Cavs will attack Gasol in pick and roll, particularly when Tristan is in the game.

36. Noah not the same on defense after the knee surgery.

37. Losing Love a big blow because he would have forced gimpy Noah to run around a lot on defense.

38. You want Jones or Marion in starting lineup at power forward to force Noah to run around.

39. The Bulls are much better offensively than they used to be, even though they are worse on defense now.

40. The games in the series are likely to be in the 100's. The Bulls can compete at that level, with their new offense.

41. Every other day I hear someone in the league tell me that Kevin Love is walking away from the Cavs this summer. Hear it all the time. But then I see Kevin saying, on the record, he will be in Cleveland.

42. Love tweeted out the picture of him with the Indians hat on yesterday, in the hospital.

43. I don't know Love well enough to know if he could say, repeatedly, that he's staying and then just leave after saying all that. Maybe he is like that, I don't know.

44. "Dozens" of sources have told me that Love is leaving the Cavs this summer.

45. I have to take Kevin Love at his word. He has not hedged at all. Aldridge of Portland has hedged. Love has not hedged.

46. I really don't know what's going to happen with Kevin Love.

47. [FIRST SHOW BREAK]

48. I hope that Perkins does not play a lot of minutes against the Bulls. It would hurt the offense a lot.

49. I think you should try to start Marion or Jones, to pull the Bulls bigs out of the paint on defense.

50. I think you use Perkins if you get into foul trouble. He can't be on the court with another guy (Mozgov, Tristan) who can't shoot. Kills the offensive spacing.

51. You often see a short term "bounce" in performance by the role players when a star player goes down, as Love did. But over time then it settles out as lack of talent shows up.

52. Will Cavs come out sluggish with the layoff and having to adapt to loss of Love?

53. Bulls are eager to take on the Cavs now. They should come in with a lot of energy.

54. Pressure is on Bulls, it seems. Like they have to get one of the first two games with JR Smith out.

55. Will the NBA come down on Dunleavy for his cheap shots in the Bucks game last night (two of them)?

56. I highly doubt there will be any suspension of Dunleavy. Maybe a foul upgrade on Dunleavy and a fine.

57. Game 1 is not decisive. But the Cavs should try to take advantage of the home crowd. And getting off to a good series start without Love could have some lasting value for the Cavs.

58. Put pressure on the Bulls. Use LeBron and Kyrie to put pressure on the Bulls defense.

59. I expect the Cavs to want to "fight back" against the Bulls in Game 1. Like they did against the Celtics when Love was injured.

60. The Cavs will want to make a statement.

61. If Cavs win Game 1, it could deflate the Bulls.

62. I think the series will go 6 or 7 games. The Bulls will get some wins. They are a good team.

.

63. LeBron has won a road game in 19 consecutive series. Incredible stat.

64. I think LeBron has won 5 or 6 road games in Chicago in his career.

65. LeBron has eliminated the Bulls in Chicago before.

66. Cavs will face some adversity. It's not supposed to be easy.

67. The biggest difference for LeBron now as compared to when he was in Cleveland before is that, 1) he has Kyrie Irving and 2) the team is suited to his style of play now.

68. Princeton offense was scrapped so that LeBron can play his style. He likes to drive and then pass inside-out (to shooters). That's why he liked playing with Boobie Gibson, Mike Miller.

69. LeBron loves to play with the floor spread and he has options to kick out to. Then he can make the decisions, find the weakness in the defense, and make plays.

70. Lebron can see two passes ahead.

71. If teams stop LeBron's spread-out offense, he's good enough to go down to the post and play inside out like that. Rather than outside-in.

72. From what I hear, the injury to Love has driven LeBron to a new level of focus. New level of being locked in.

73. LeBron has taken things up a notch since Love's injury, to make sure the team does not let down or get down after the Love injury.

74. I think you will be seeing the MVP LeBron coming out to play now.

75. [SECOND SHOW BREAK]

76. Derrick Rose does not like Kyrie. We think that it's because Kyrie started over him for Team USA, and Rose thinks he needs to prove something now against Kyrie.

77. In the preseason game at Ohio State, Rose went after Kyrie much more than you would expect for a preseason game.

78. There is a personal thing between Rose and Kyrie now.

79. Rose feels he can get to Kyrie.

80. Kyrie must prepare for Rose to go right at him.

81. Rose's game is the same. He wants to attack the rim.

82. Rose still plays with great speed, despite the injuries. Speed and power.

83. Kyrie must prepare for attacking Rose. And Kyrie must stay out of foul trouble.

84. Rose will try to get into Kyrie's body.

85. Kyrie will score. So his preparation must be for defense.

86. Rose is not as good on defense as he used to be. Brooks is terrible on defense.

87. I expect Kyrie to have a big offensive series. But he must be ready on defense.

88. I thought Kyrie did great in the first round against Boston.

89. The Cavs are good enough defensively to win at the highest level, even if their defense could be better.

90. The Cavs play too much one on one offensively. This is my concern with them, the concern I've had for months. "My turn, your turn" (on isos with Kyrie and LeBron).

91. Sometimes the Cavs move the ball, but at the end of the game or the end of a shot clock they tend to revert back to "My turn, your turn." This concerns me.

92. It's a failure of the Cavs team to not develop a "go to offense" down the stretch. And maybe it won't hurt them, maybe the "My turn, your turn" offense will win out. But to me, that is THE weakness of the Cavs at this time (on offense and as a team).

93. I don't want to see Kyrie going one on one with Rose in this series. But that's probably what will happen because it's happened all year.

94. For Mozgov, stay out of foul trouble. The Bulls will work to get Gasol isolation situations on offense, when Chicago has the ball.

95. I expect the Cavs will do high screens to involve Gasol (exploit Gasol's defense), and when Gasol steps up to defend then Kyrie or LeBron will throw a lob to Mozgov for a dunk. Look for this play often in the series.

96. Once the Bulls adjust and have their other big man (Noah, Gibson, Mirotic) go and stay with Mozgov when Pau is forced to guard Cavs' high pick and rolls, Cavs can then pass ball to the corners and get a wide open 3-point shot. But to do so, Cavs need a power forward who can shoot the perimeter shot (meaning not Tristan and not Perkins, and of course not the injured Kevin Love).

97. This Cavs offense means Mozgov/Tristan must be on the floor as center, and the other big man must be able to shoot a perimeter shot.

98. The way to beat Gasol on defense is to make him move, not try to challenge his length.

99. [THIRD SHOW BREAK]

100. SALARY CAP 101. Kevin Love's contract situation. His contract is an opt-in, not an opt-out. I think he will not opt-in, so he can make more money. There's like $2.5 million at stake he can make if he does not opt in. There will be 5-8 teams with maximum cap space, and he would get several offers (Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, Cavs) I think. So I think he will become a free agent, just not sure what he will do then.

101. (talking about different contract options for Love and the increasing salary cap).

102. Kevin Love holds all the cards in free agency. He will get whatever he wants, given the current market and the (large) amount of salary cap space that several teams have available now.

103. You cannot renegotiate NBA contracts down, as you can in the NFL. But you can add years to it in the NBA.

104. (talking about Browns' NFL draft).

"His contract is an opt-in, not an opt-out."

Sorry, Windy, that makes no fucking sense.

The Isolation plays in the playoffs have given us about one point per attempt (according to NBA stats). That's somewhat below our average. On the other hand they often lead to passes to open three point shooters. So all in all this might be a good bargain.

Sorry, Windy, that makes no fucking sense.
If it was an opt out or Early Termination Option (ETO) and Love invoked it then his contract could not be extended but since its a opt in (Player Option) even if Love chose not to invoke it, his contract could still be extended.

Before you ask, yes, there is a benefit to signing an extension over signing a new contract. I'm too tired to expand on them now but I'll do so in the morning.

See, not if Windhorst had said THIS, I wouldn't have assumed he had no idea what he was talking about.

See, not if Windhorst had said THIS, I wouldn't have assumed he had no idea what he was talking about.

Really? Just because he translated it to layman's terms? Opt-in is a good way to describe the situation: he is not under control now, but has the option to remain with the team if he so chooses. Which, btw, has been disected here pretty thoroughly. But a radio q&a isn't exactly the best venue for the cba nitty gritty.

I can't believe the next game is still another two and a half days away. There is such a thing as too much rest.

Hey Windy --- 5.8.15 [full show]
http://stationcaster.com/stations/w..._Brian_Windhorst___Jason_Gibbs-1431090879.mp3

01. Many people (fans) in Chicago are confident that Bulls have the edge in the series and that the Bulls will win Games 3 and 4 in Chicago.

02. Bulls fans feel that without Kevin Love, Bulls have the edge.

03. Chicago media has documented that Derrick Rose has 0 free throw attempts in the first two games and Kyrie has 21 (so expect refs may be influenced by this).

04. I am expecting Chicago crowd will put pressure on the refs to call fouls for Rose and the Bulls tonight.

05. I would expect Rose to get some 50/50 whistles tonight.

06. Bulls must find a way to get fouls on Mozgov and Tristan.

07. Cavs are rebounding machines when Timofey and Tristan are on the court together.

08. With T-Mo and TT on floor together, Cavs have gotten 44% of available offensive rebounds so far this series. Dominant stat.

09. Bulls are mad that Cavs are killing them with offensive rebounds.

10. Why is everyone so enamored with LeBron's headband?

11. LeBron's quote about taking off headband to look like teammates not a big deal. I'm disappointed in the public for blowing up this quote by LeBron.

12. In the playoffs, the casual fan comes out in force. And the casual fan is interested in LeBron's headband.

13. LeBron wanted to play Game 2 with force.

14. LeBron decided that if Cavs lost Game 2, he would go down shooting and with force.

15. The word "aggressive" is the most overused phrase in the playoffs.

16. LeBron probably looked back on the first 10 minutes of Game 1, saw he had only shot twice, and the team was down 14 points. Wasn't going to have a repeat of that.

17. Game 2 was not great basketball from LeBron; there is more in the tank. This is an uplifting thought for Cavs fans. A big, efficient game is coming in this series.

18. Thibs fine with LeBron taking a lot of shots. Just not want guys like James Jones to be wide open.

19. The way to slow down LeBron from driving hard is to get him to get a charging call. Then he will get tentative.

20. LeBron has fouled out in the playoffs each of the last two years. He can get in foul trouble.

21. Bulls will pack the paint and force the Cavs to shoot outside.

22. Cavs did not have a great shooting game in Game 2. There is more there. And will need to shoot better tonight.

23. LeBron is a moody guy, in general. Including with his game. Sometimes drives hard, sometimes settles for outside shot.

24. (talking about play where LeBron yelled at T-Mo for not setting the screen; wasn't T-Mo's fault)

25. Sometimes LeBron is going to do what he wants to do, and if it doesn't go well someone else is going to be blamed. Because he's moody.

26. LeBron doing the timeouts early in games because he is playing to exhaustion. Then he will get a second wind. So sometimes goes all out at first just to get to this point.

27. If you are a home team and you do not take a timeout before the first official timeout (6:00 left in the first quarter), you will be charged with a timeout anyways. So you may as well just take the timeout, as LeBron did early in Game 2.

28. [FIRST SHOW BREAK]

29. Tweeter: LeBron's shooting percentage is way down this year. Why?

30. Windy: Great question. There are a few reasons, some of them theories. Heat offense was designed around maximum efficiency. It was much more organized than the Cavs offense, if you want to call it that. Heat offense much more focused on spreading the floor. So LeBron's, Wade's, Bosh's shooting percentages went up. Spoelstra sold the players on only taking good shots. There were stats analyses done on where to shoot by the Heat. LeBron, Wade and Bosh became obsessed with their efficiency in shooting as a result.

31. Heat were also focused on three point shooting.

32. With the break up of the LeBron Heat, all 3 of Miami's Big 3 saw their shooting percentages fall this year.

33. Cavs don't run anything like what Heat did in terms of getting good shots (as focus). Much of this is LeBron's fault because Blatt's offense was basically junked. And this worked for the team, but it hurt the Cavs' shooting efficiency.

34. In the playoffs, your shooting percentage will go down anyways. Teams are better, they know your tendencies.

35. LeBron is doing more isolation plays this year (I think he said). Trying to put team on his shoulders.

36. Also, LeBron's turnovers are up.

37. More isolation offense (versus Heat's "maximize efficiency" offense) and more turnovers means LeBron's efficiency stats [like PER] are down this year.

[END OF FIRST HALF OF SHOW]

38. Host: Does Blatt deserve credit for Game 2?

39. Windy: Yes he does.
Blatt realized he needed changes for Game 2. He saw Tristan Thompson could help out more. It took guts for Blatt to make this move, because it changes the offense when TT starts and you have two big men who can't really shoot outside shots.

40. Noah is getting "worked over" so far in this series.

41. Noah is a "shell" of what he used to be.

42. Cavs bigs are outplaying the Bulls bigs so far in the series.

43. Blatt did not have much practice time to make adjustments, so it really took guts for Blatt to make the lineup changes he did.

44. I've been critical of Blatt this year, but I wrote a column yesterday saying Blatt deserves credit for making some adjustments prior to Game 2 (nice work, Windy. Mark of a true professional rather than some hack sports journalist who doesn't want to be "proven wrong" even when the facts aren't on their side).

45. Thibs will adjust, so Blatt must continue to make adjustments as well.

46. Coaches earn their money in making adjustments, and having the will to implement the adjustments (like putting TT in the starting lineup). Also in having the will to NOT make changes when the coach should not.

47. The reason why the Cavs pick and roll defense was not so great in Game 1 was because the Cavs made a conscious effort to try to limit Derrick Rose. And the strategy did not work so well (on Rose or with Pau).

48. [SECOND SHOW BREAK]

49. Cavs are really having to scramble now because of the changing lineups.

50. I think JR Smith will start tonight, so that's another new Cavs lineup.

51. I'm not sure what will happen with Iman Shumpert.

52. The media will not know how much Shumpert could do in shoot around today because Cavs media availability is before shoot around, not after. Sometimes teams on the road have the media availability before shoot around, sometimes after. Cavs doing it before shoot around today.

53. The good news with Shumpert is he did not experience a severe groin injury that would threaten his status for the entire series.

54. If Shumpert had experienced a groin tear, they never would have let him come back in the game. So it was probably just a pull.

55. I don't know if Shumpert is going to be able to go in Game 3.

56. Shumpert's injury could have been much worse.

57. When Shumpert went out in Game 2 and Bulls went on a run, that was the first time in this series that I think the Cavs got into a danger zone in this series.

58. It's hard to think about big picture of the playoffs when you're just trying to patch together a lineup game to game (with injuries, suspension).

59. If Shumpert can play in Game 3, you have to play him.

60. Because this is a road playoff game, I think Shumpert will try to play tonight.

61. Shumpert has been playing well for like the last 4 playoff games or so.

62. Shumpert has made up for the loss of JR Smith.

63. Cavs made up for absence of JR Smith in Game 2. His being out had no real affect on the game.

64. Cavs pretty much have not felt the loss of JR Smith in the first two games of the series.

65. Role players tend to tense up on the road in the playoffs.

66. Because of this, LeBron and Kyrie need to have big games tonight.

67. Two years ago, JR Smith was suspended in the playoffs. He had been playing well until he was suspended then. And when he came back from the suspension, he played poorly. Hopefully that won't happen this time.

68. JR Smith was the last guy out on the court shooting at shoot around on Wednesday before Game 2. I think he wants to come back strong.

69. If Iman Shumpert can't play, then you put JR Smith in the starting lineup.

70. I did not sense optimism from Blatt yesterday about Shumpert being able to play in Game 3.

71. If Iman can play in Game 3, I would continue to start him over Smith.

72. If Shumpert and Smith can play, then Cavs can play the "4 Wings" lineup. This is Kyrie, Iman, JR, LeBron and one big man. Cavs like this lineup.

73. Often to close games the 4 Wings lineup has included Tristan on the court. And it's been great offensively, that lineup.

74. Even without Love, the 4 Wings lineup has been great. But have not been able to use it against the Bulls this series yet because of Smith's suspension (and now maybe because of Shumpert's injury).

75. In 4 Wings lineup, LeBron will guard a big man (playing power forward).

76. Best news for Cavs is that at some point in this series, they will have the 4 Wings lineup (Windy expects Shumpert to be back soon even if not tonight).

77. Cavs will not lose Thompson. I would not be surprised if Cavs do a deal with TT that is like 4 years, $60 million.

78. That figure sounds high for Thompson, but in a playoff setting Thompson is invaluable because he can guard on the perimeter, incredible rebounder, great motor, never gets hurt.

79. Tristan was a terrific draft pick by the Cavs.

80. In a playoff setting, Thompson is a world class player. He will get paid because of what he's doing now in the playoffs.

81. Possessions matter more in the playoffs, so the value of Thompson's offensive rebounds mean even more in the playoffs than they do in the regular season.

82. Thompson looks much better when he's your 4th or 5th best player rather than when he's supposed to be your 2nd or 3rd best player.

83. Tristan will never be a 20/10 guy. Probably not a 15/10 guy. But he can be a 10/10 guy with 5 offensive rebounds. That is very valuable.

84. [THIRD SHOW BREAK]

85. Tweeter: Is Shawn Marion hurt?

86. Windy: I don't think he is. But I'm not giving up hope on him yet. He's a versatile defender. Both Miller and Shumpert have not been able to do it in this series, so far. But you know what I say about Mike Miller (zombie, will be revived, will hit threes).

87. I think Blatt reached a point where he decided Marion and Miller would not be in his rotation.

88. I think wear and tear, not injury, has reduced Miller and Marion. Blatt feels Delly has more to offer than those two.

89. Delly has been really good in the first two games against the Bulls.

90. Bulls took advantage of Delly, on defense, in Game 1. But he was better than the other options.

91. Bulls are packing the paint on defense. This is why Delly, Shumpert and others are getting wide open looks.

92. Cavs game is to put up volume threes, to force the other team to guard the perimeter. So as to clear the paint for drives for LeBron, Kyrie.

93. To make Cavs offense work, you must hit threes. And Delly did that in Game 2.

94. I love everything about Joakim Noah. Just as a reporter.

95. "I'm not a Cleveland Cavs fan. I cover the game." (explaining that he has to be objective, so looks for good stories and quotes and Noah gives them).

96. I would want Noah on my team in a heartbeat. I love that he trash talks. I love his competitiveness. And he's playing like a dog in this series.

97. I am a fan of Ohio State football. I love that Cardale is trash talking Noah.

98. KEYS TO GAME 3. Cavs must get efficient games from Kyrie, LeBron in Game 3. I don't think Cavs will shoot the three as well tonight. Bulls will come out and try to force action at the rim to try to get Cavs in foul trouble. It will take special stuff from LeBron to get the win in Game 3. If Cavs get the Game 3 win, they will be in great shape.

99. NON BOLD PREDICTION. I expect Bulls to win Game 3 and Cavs to win Game 4.

The Isolation plays in the playoffs have given us about one point per attempt (according to NBA stats). That's somewhat below our average. On the other hand they often lead to passes to open three point shooters. So all in all this might be a good bargain.

In comparing specific play types to overall shooting efficiency, it should be remembered that the most efficient play is scoring in transition. The problem is that you can't always get transition plays, which means that an overall shooting stat that includes high-efficiency transition plays distorts the relative efficiency of those other play types, which are going against a set defense.

18. Thibs fine with LeBron taking a lot of shots. Just not want guys like James Jones to be wide open.

21. Bulls will pack the paint and force the Cavs to shoot outside.

And that, in a nutshell, is the problem faced by the Bulls and every other team that plays the Cavs. It may not be James Jones, but if Smith, Shumpert, or any other outside shooter gets hot, we're extremely difficult to stop. The flip side is that if we can't hit outside shots, we're in trouble.

Of course, that applies to a great many teams in the league besides the Cavs....

It's a damn shame we didn't adopt the Heat offense here in Cleveland. We have the personnel for it.

I'm not sure why Blatt didn't decide to take a page from Spoelstra in this regard; I'm sure it would've went over better with James than what we were running to start the season.

Hope to see this change happen next season.
