Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As long as you aren't depending on Delly to be the sole offensive creator, it's gravy.

He can play with Kyrie Irving and he can also play with another combo guard.

His defensive versatility and being able to make open shots and move the basketball is extremely valuable.

We needed another guy out there that could break down the defense off the dribble, Delly doesn't provide that and shouldn't be expected to either.

Your analysis on that seems spot on.

But I really wouldn't put it past him to develop (to the best extent someone his size/ability can) the capability to break people down on his own. 2 years ago nobody expected he would develop into the defender he is now. I think he will start working on his next advancements tomorrow

No one operates in a vacuum, so when you consider alternatives to Delly and their skill set, consider their fit with the team mates and playing style of others and then the need for high level defense. The stat line they have will not tell you this. Look at the +/- team sets for them when they play as well as their individual rating. Look at how others respond to them.
When you consider Delly's run in the playoffs, look at how he has affected the play of others. I think TT has been great with Delly, same with Mozgov.
It is disappointing that there was not a game 7, but it has been a great run. It is a team to be proud of, they did not roll over and they kept playing until the last second.

Imagine the massive contract offers delly would have got if he was injured between game 3 and 4 and never played another game in the series. His value would have been artificially sky high for his next contract.

It will still be much higher than where it is. His defense on Curry was good, not great like in 2/3. Have a think of other backup PG's in the league and then look at how well they have played on Curry - who has done well?

How much do you reckon we will offer him?

I wonder if they will just put a qualifying offer and look at what they need to match.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone offers around 9-12m over 3yr. Count ourselves lucky he had some bad shooting games at the end. Perhaps we get in early with a discount because he probably wants to stay???

Seems reasonable. I think if we offered 7.5 over 3 he would stay.

7-9 mil over 3 years guaranteed. Seriously, what backup PG in the past 15 years has been asked to step into the shoes of a superstar and hold things together for three series? Once you have this list compare the number and results if possible. Frankly I cannot think of any comparison.
Am I saying Delly is 'perfect'? No of course not, but he was not the reason for the loss and I think the Cavs did very well to get where they did. Had they won game one, we might have had a different situation.

Delly is the third string point guard on an elite team. We need to sign a viable back up pg, for no other reason than the fact Kyrie has battle staying healthy his whole young career.

The people saying Golden State depth were good are correct, but remember to look at salaries for both teams. Its,easier to understand why this Cavaliers team overachieved and shouldn't be lambasted while Golden State had role players succeeding in their roles.

But I get it, you are a fan. You are mad. You want to vent and you don't like fact checks.

I'd go as far as to say our depth is better, considering our role/bench players were basically starting in the finals.

Our undrafted back up point guard had no back up. Not much we can do. We did well all things considered.

The primary job of the backup PG is to play 15 or mpg while the starter rests. Delly is capable of running an offense, playing plus defense, and providing intangibles that help the whole team. He also can play as the SG. That all makes him perfect in the backup PG role, because if he had all the skills that people claim he lacks, he'd be a starting PG somewhere else.

But there seems to be this misplaced expectation that the backup is supposed to be able to handle all the PG duties if the starter goes down, and that's ridiculous. The problem in the Finals wasn't that Delly sucked as a backup. It's that we didn't have a third PG to complement Delly.

That's what we should be looking for, not a replacement for Delly.

Will delly walk if they hire another back up?

I find this extremely unlikely. He wasn't supposed to beat out Jarrett Jack, Dion Waiters, and Mike Miller for playing time to begin with, but he did. Whoever they bring in seems likely to share backup guard minutes, either alongside Delly or pushing Delly to shooting guard.
