Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The teams I would focus on the most are San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Boston.

These are teams that for a variety of reason, are looking to create cap space or move out guys who are no longer system fits for them.

So players that may available could include: Tiago Splitter, Patty Mills, Monta Ellis, Ray Felton, Wilson Chandler, JJ Hickson, Randy Foye, OJ Mayo, Jared Dudley, Jerryd Bayless, Brandon Jennings, Brandon Bass, and Avery Bradley

It goes without saying that these are just educated guesses, but it wouldn't shock me to see a lot of those guys moved this offseason.

OJ Mayo was a fuckin baller for MIL in the playoffs this year IIRC, you sure theyd want to get rid of him?

These in bold would be interesting. I've written about Splitter and others have talked about Bradley.

Dudley could be a big asset if we have to fight a small ball battle again. He is a good defender especially regarding team defense (2.47 DRPM, 8th best among small forwards); with him on court, the Bucks DRtg was 99.5 as opposed to 104.2 with him off, and 95.3 with him on against the Bulls in the playoffs and and 110 with him off. He hit 38.5% of threes, hit 40% of open ones and 38% of wide open ones (this number would need to increase).

If we, say, wind up playing against a super SF in the finals, we could use him to give LeBron a break.

Not sure he is worth all the tax Gilbert would pay, though.

As far as Wilson Chandler is concerned, I don't really like him. He's a pretty good man to man defender, but not a very good team defender (his DRPM at -1.36 isn't what we need), and he doesn't seem to hit open shots at a great clip (34% on open shots and 39% on wide open ones).

Ty Lawson? Comes with baggage, but fits the parameters and Denver can't wait to dump him.

Bradley is a pipe dream. Why would Boston trade him?

I can get behind Wilson Chandler. He looked like he was about to break out in NYC before getting traded. Good length, good athleticism and would give LBJ that necessary rest to maintain his level of play.

We would still need to address our PG depth, as well as look for another big who could provide spot minutes here and there.

I agree that's why i said i don't think it's possible. I think it's not debatable that our main focus roster wise should be a legit backup PG, a SF that can contribute coming off the bench and another big as an insurance policy for injuries. Probably our only tradeable asset is Haywood's contract though tha's why it would be great if we could get two birds with one stone. If his contract could somehow land us Splitter/Mills that would leave us with only spot to fill at SF.

I highly doubt we could get Mayo for Haywood. They aren't looking to dump talent for space.

They just did with Ilysova. But I think they already have the space they desired, so I doubt they do more of that.

Just for clarification:

The Cavs have till wait until after July 1st for Haywood's contract to be 10.5 mil. They also can't trade their 1st round pick until after they pick or they acquire another 2015 or 2016 1st rounder.

So any rumors about trading are pick either a.) imply that we'll draft a player then trade his rights a few weeks later or b.) are bullshit

The draft is next Thursday, and July 1st is less than a week after that. Not really that far off as "a few weeks later" makes it sound. But I agree that some rumors that will be out there will reek of BS, and those with the rumors probably know jack shit about the CBA.

Here's a question for you...

What about draft night trades? Those players aren't signed to their contracts with their prospective teams yet right? So, a player gets drafted by, say, the Pistons; then somewhat later that night, he gets traded to the Kings for XYZ. That player hasn't signed with the Pistons yet, so the same delay requirements don't kick in.

So I guess concisely, does the NBA look at these trades as simply being unconsummated for 30 days, or are they considered trading the actual pick (I don't think they are)?

In the scenario you are describing, they are actually trading "draft rights". Draft rights account for no money when trying to match salaries, so swapping draft rights of multiple players is fine. We technically drafted 3 different players, and traded all of their draft rights for the rights to Tyler Zeller a few years back.

In the Wiggins-Love deal, we needed Wiggins' salary to help match Love's salary, so we had to sign him and wait 30 days.

Right, but is a trade on draft night allowed under the Stepien Rule?

Pretty sure the second the pick is made, the player is eligible to be traded(or his draft rights), regardless of what we traded away in previous or future years.

It's just the pick itself before its made, with no selection attached, that can't be traded in consecutive drafts

It actually seems this is allowed, so we don't have to wait; we can trade the pick immediately - so long as we are the ones to make the pick.

Yep, you're right. So we don't actually need to wait, we can trade Haywood on draft night as his salary would be $10M+, and we'd have made the pick.

I thought some people were saying that Haywoods deal doesn't become worth 10 million until July 1st?

Either way, these type of deals go down all the time on draft night where the framework to the deal is announced on draft night or shortly after but the deal can't become official until July 1 or whatever date the league has set for when Free agents can officially sign. Whatever the deadline is, its not going to stop teams from working on deals now.

Yeah, but, that doesn't really matter.. ;)

Exactly.

I'd expect Haywood to be traded on draft night.
