Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This dude is trash. Teams have caught on to those lobs but he throws them still when TT isn't even open. He has tunnel vision. I've never seen him penetrate and throw it out to an open shooter. Its always TT, if he's open or not. He's off more than he's on when it comes to making shots. He's just terrible on offense. Defense, he's okay but not as good as some of you make him out to be. We NEED a two way pg BAD. Disagree all you want. :thumb:

Wouldn't Delly also have some value to us a a backup SG? If we have Love and Kyrie and LeBron out there, we don't really need offense from the SG and Center. If we lose JR, which seems quite possible, then Delly might land some minutes at SG.

Was a backup ever so scouted as Delly was in the finals. Once he hurt them in game 3, they didn't stop hounding him. JR and Shump couldn't pick up the slack. I don't think there is a deficiency here whatsoever. I think a deeper and more talented team beat us. What Delly did was incredible.

Deeper team due to injuries
JR disappearing and shump being injured simply caused the Cavs to lean on Delly beyond his capabilities.
He does need to improve his shooting more, but otherwise he's a nice piece for the bench, especially in a 10-15 minute per night role.

Its a reason the Cavs have been looking for a back up PG since the trade deadline and have it as a priority in the offseason. Delly is a 3rd string point guard on an elite team. If we have the team I expect us to have once training camp start Delly would potentially be the 11th or 12th man. If we sign a back up PG and add another wing in the offseason.

I see the Cavs keeping everyone. Even if it's to trade them later in another deal.

I could see us keeping Delly and signing Mo or getting Mills. Making Delly expendable later down the line if things work out.

Wrong thread.

Can you think of counterexamples?

In a quick brainstorm of combo guards who didn't have a quick first step, which Dellavadova certainly is:

BJ Armstrong, John Bagley, Dana Barros, Jon Barry, Steve Blake, Jose Calderon, Howard Eisley, Derrick Fisher, Boobie Gibson, Jeff Hornacek, Jarret Jack, Damon Jones, Steve Kerr, Andre Miller, Jameer Nelson, Tim Legler, John and Jim Paxson, Scott Skiles, Eric Snow, David Wesley, Charlie Ward, Greivis Vasquez, and all the veteran point guards over 30 who won playoff games on smarts and physicality after their quick left them: Late 80s Dennis Johnson, Mark Jackson after he left the Knicks, Houston era Kenny Smith, the last 5 seasons of Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups, and Jason Williams when he was out of White Chocolate.

I'm sure there's more. If a player has a decent three point shot, knows how to run a team, and defends well, other positions can provide dribble penetration.

So a list of off ball guards whose only job was to stand still and be a dead-eye shooter, point guards who were clearly better off the dribble than Delly, and veteran point guards who were once dribble penetrators and evolved their game to create with their back to the basket and working angles? Delly fits into only the first category, and I submit many players can play that role with 50% open looks.

There's a reason I said PG who cannot create off the dribble, which is what Delly would most likely be around the league. Lucky for him we do not use him that way. And when we do, the team goes out and tries to replace him.

There are no direct quotes from anyone with the Cavaliers which indicate Dellavedova was being replaced, let alone the hyperbole you injected. They were looking for another point guard who had more scoring ability. At the time neither Delly nor Irving were healthy, it was wise to see what else was out there.

For all your hemming and hawing about Delly taking so many open looks, that is a role in the NBA. Chosing to pass to a more open team mate when others might gun away is a skill. Taking the open shot rather than dribbling the air out as the defense resets is a skill. Phil Jackson's point guards usually gained his trust for having those skills rather than doing Rafer Alston crap, for all the quickness and handle that guy had, his decision-making makes him an NBA footnote.

As for flippantly dismissing my list of both point guards and combo guards in the 6'4 range, you can blow your credibility whenever you want bro. Keep making me look good.

Well, first you need to understand the point I made before you lecture me some more. I said Delly shoots 40% because he gets an insane number of open looks due to our other offensive threats. In other words, the numbers you keep using to show that he is a good PG (40% 3s, A/T ratio) completely fall apart in context.

LOL. Completely change what I asked for. Throw a bunch of names in a list hoping that I don't know who they are. Declare victory!!! Whatever dude. You put your money on 8 red, lost a bunch of times, hit once, and are now all in hoping you hit again with everyone watching. Everyone knows it.

Are you seriously saying Delly is a combo guard around the league? He certainly is on our team, but that is only because we have offensive players who draw so much attention.

Of course, there won't be a direct quote saying Delly was going to be replaced. But since around the trade deadline, they've inquired on Jordan Farmer, Mo Williams, Norris Cole and George Hill. And that's only the names that have gotten out. It's obvious they're looking for someone they're more comfortable with as a backup pg and look at Delly as a 5th guard/3rd pg.

A 6'4 guy who defends three positions, and often switches on and off initiating the offense is most certainly a combo guard. That's why I included a few guys who played the same role at the same physical size, like Wesley and Jon Barry. Keep making me look good, Nate. Enjoy all the negative rep you piled up today during your public undressing.

Summary judgment granted to Keys.
