Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cavs balked at paying Tristan 13m this past off-season. Now they need to pay him at least 15m and he might balk then, too. If they wait another offseason, and he gets a whole postseason to just run around, board and defend while Love sucks defenders out of the paint then some team will go stupid for him during the Great Capsplosion of 2016. Cavs got to get a long term deal done here.

If Love is healthy next year during the playoffs (*crosses fingers*) that will hurt TT's value. I think he'd be taking a huge huge gamble by signing the QO.

Yeah actually as time goes by, he's losing his leverage.

No team is offering for him now, he will lose money if he takes the QO.

He will have to take whatever Cavs offered. Hopefully less than 80/5.

His resignation means too much to the success of this team??

LOL. For all the talk from the likes of Windhorst and Le Batard of LeBron wielding his leverage and giving max power to the players, he's doing exactly the opposite.

Windhorst has 'sources' and is 'accurate' during the season as he can go to games and be part of media crowd and then derives opinions from what he sees and his experience of covering Lebron for 12 years. If i followed Lebron around for 12 years and got to know him i'd also know what he was up to. Yes he obviously does have some sources I admit but this offseason is proving they aren't very well connected when it comes to intra-organisational operations. The fact that he has been consistently off the mark this offseason only proves to us more that there is a gap between Athletes + the organisations and the media and what they report to us.....

.... And then there's Woj

Does anybody know why over at realgm there is so much hate for TT? The most recent thread is bashing TT and the rumour of 80/5.. people saying they would Take JJ Hickson or Brandan Wright over TT^^

I really ask myself.. when did TT become so polarizing? Hes a blue collar Hard Working Guy.. And Big Men of simillar worth around his age have gotten huge contracts recently as well(Kanter,Green,Monroe)

Are people scared of us having TT as luxury of the Bench? Have people really forgotten how TT basically outplayed any Big he faced in the Playoffs? How any Team we faced had to gameplan against TTs offensive rebounding madness?

I know 80/5 for a 9/8 guy seem horrendous at first glance but you really have to be devoid of any basketball knowledge to not know that a) TT is extremly important to us and b)there is no valid reachable option to replace him.
Okay, tristan.

I like TT, but the 3 guys you listed are all superior offensive players, and all are expected to start. TT is a backup who can't score, so whatever additional worth he has to us because we hold his Bird rights, I can certainly see why other people would think the numbers being floated are a massive overpay.

Completely disagree. Thompson is this team's 'small ball' center and we just witnessed a Warriors team smash through the NBA season and the playoffs by going small. The Warriors beat the Cavs by doing this, and come playoff time this is how every team will front the Cavs. Thompson is going to continue to get ample playing time come the playoffs because he defends and hustles. Love being back allows Thompson to shoulder little to no load offensively while freeing him up to all the dirty work that fans, coaches and GMs love. Love being back just keeps Jones out of the small ball situation.

Some team on the cusp, with a bunch of new cap space next year, is going to see Tristan as that ' championship proven' guy and get stupid. Being unrestricted he will have all the leverage. He will only get more expensive if they fail to get it done this off-season.

Not really sure any of us knows yet what the rotation might look like for the playoffs given the potential for injuries and surprises and trades but it does seem like Tristan will be hard pressed to break 30 minutes per game during the regular season. Even if we assume that LeBron plays zero minutes at the 4, which seems unlikely, you still have 5 guys competing for a piece of the 96 minutes:

Love: 33
Varejao: 12
Thompson: 23
Mozgov: 22
Kaun: 8

Regular season could look something like this. Love is not someone we will want to piss off by limiting his play time. I'm guessing he re-signed because he believes he will be utilized as a player who can have a realistic shot at an all star appearance. Kaun I put at 8 minutes because I figure Blatt and Griffin need to figure out what if anything this guy can give us, because there's a chance we may need to replace Mozgov with him next season. Andy I put at 12 mins which is probably the least he's ever played. He, again, needs to at least play enough to stay in rhythm and to show the coaches and Griffin what he has left. Mozgov I put at 22 which is probably close to his career average and which would presume a similar usage to last year which I think is realistic. That leaves 23 for Thompson. Rough estimates, but it could happen.

In the playoffs I'm sure Thompson would play a bit more, possibly a lot more depending on how Varejao and Kaun look.

... and Monroe and Kanter are starters who cannot defend. Green has more range than Thompson, but I would not call him a scorer by any means.

I was answering the question posed by a particular poster about why fans on RealGM (according to him) think the numbers being discussed for TT are an overpayment. We can argue all day about actual overall value, but there are pretty clear differences between TT and the guys listed that might lead other people to think TT is being overpaid. Most important is probably the fact that they start, and he doesn't. But the lack of offensive game and even development of an offensive game also likely matters in their perception of his value.
