JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We already have 4 guys who can play PG. We are fine.

Agreed. Finding another big that can shoot or another backup at SF are more pressing needs (though I think we're fine). We're pretty set at G unless some no-brainer, home-run deal comes our way. Kyrie, Mo, Delly, Shump, and Smith could very well be the best guard rotation in the league. Off the top of my head, it's hard to think of a better one. Some teams may have a little more on the top end, but it's hard to match our 1-5.

We're more or less where we were last year but healthy and replacing Marion a fossil who played D with a fossil that stands and shoots 3s. RJeff is smart and doesn't take many non-3s. If there's anything Cavs add I would hope it would be a youngish athletic wing. An energy-ish Jae Crowder-type. Who knows maybe that's Pointer. I doubt it but never know. Not thinking super skilled guy. However if the Wolves indeed release Damon Rudez, that wouldn't be a bad pick up.

As noted here, Wolves carrying 16 guaranteed contracts.

(That said, guard Lorenzo Brown is only partially guaranteed and the more likely to go.)

Glad JR's back

With JR re-signing...our 10-man core from last year is all officially retuning, plus adding Mo Williams and Richard Jefferson.

Our backcourt in particular is STACKED, youthful, and versatile as hell on offense and defense. Very excited about that. Our frontcourt is fairly deep as well, assuming everyone stays healthy. Ironically the only position where we don't have an adequate backup is someone to spell LeBron. :chuckle:

I think that this year's roster, with the benefit of hindsight, looks dramatically better than last year's at the start of the year. Now what it looks like in the middle or at the end of the season is anyone's guess.

T-Wolves actually have 16 guaranteed contracts. Lorenzo Brown would be their 17th.

So they will have to dump at least one contract. I'm guessing they just end up waiving Rudez and eat his salary.

I think the Cavs can do better than Rudez though.

Latest. Wrote about J.R. and why the deal is both great for him and the team.

A few weeks into free agency, I threw out the possibility that Smith wanted more money and more stability, the Cavaliers wanted as short as possible due to Mozgov's impending big contract. I placed my chips on a two year deal with a team option for a third year. The contract that came about - with a very fair no-trade clause - was better for both parties than what I had predicted. Griffin is proving to be more shrewd than many of us had thought last summer, but at the same time flexible to what the players really want.

It's hard to argue that our frontcourt isn't stacked as well, offering the same combination of versatility (large vs. small ball) and youth as well (Andy, who we won't be counting on much, will be the oldest.)

Across the whole league, only the Spurs stack up with that IMO.

I've been just as guilty as most about bitching with the moves made by the FO this offseason, but in reality we're starting the season one of the deepest teams in the league with TWO trade exemptions at our disposal to be used as we see fit. This is going to be a blast.

I know a lot of people disagree with what I'm about to say, but here goes anyhow. JR was the closest thing this team had to an enforcer last season. I was proud of him when he backhanded Crowder in the Boston series, the guy clearly had it coming and the refs were allowing Boston to openly foul the Cavs with no whistles or repercussions.

Then again against the Warriors, when JR plowed right over some of those picks by Green, I was proud of him because he alone was doing what should have been done by someone like TT or someone bigger than JR. JR alone knew that we were getting the short end of the stick against certain opponents. It's too bad his previous history made the penalties worse than they should have been, and I hope we have someone on the team who will take appropriate action when another team is bullying our players and the refs swallow their whistles.

I'm glad JR is back. That is all.

I said exactly this in the JR thread. There's a reason that pundits have asserted that Mozgov and JR added "much-needed toughness" to the Cavs. I get not compromising the integrity of the game and playing it "the right way", but the Cavs, in particular LeBron, were victims of bully ball when opposing teams were unable to beat them straight-up.

The Cavs should come out this year with a chip on their shoulder...not only to avenge their shorthanded Finals loss but also Cleveland's place in the sports world for the past 50+ years. Just a little bit of nastiness would be the edge needed to make this team truly unstoppable.
