JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wow, we really view him as a ticking time bomb.

Also, I have to imagine he definitely opts out next year to find something with more than $2.1M guaranteed.
I dont think hed try that again

I bet its more incentive based than performance. Like dont get more than 12 technicals this season and you get the full amount

For as many minutes as he'll be playing (~25 mins a night), 12 technicals would be A LOT. I think the league leaders for a whole season are around that each season.

So let me get this straight. Is JR's contract only partially guaranteed for each season only in terms of money and not as though we could cut him? Or can we cut JR in the middle of either year, which is why it's only partially guaranteed for each season? What makes it weirder is that there's a player option. So, if it's the second scenario, it's like we get to cut him in the middle of either season, but, if he gets past January 8th or whatever, he gets to decide if he wants to stay with his current contract. Either way, it's something I've never seen before. I am really interested in seeing what the exact stipulations of the contract are.

Here's another question: what's our tax liability on the performance based money? Does it count the same as guaranteed salary?

The tax is only calculated for your salary at the end of the year. So if JR earns his entire contract, we pay tax on it. If he doesn’t, we don’t.

If I'm a Cav player coming up for contract talk, I might just be given Rich Paul a call.....just saying.......whoever is Jr Smith agent, good luck getting future clients .....lol

I am guessing maybe one of the sticking points to the Tristan deal is maybe not all of our offer was guaranteed?

The major sticking point is still Rich Paul's hands on Gilbert's ass cheeks.

Yeah, it's been previously suggested that incentives were what got it to 80 million.

Not sure I like this approach...JR was a key contributor to this team last year, he played very well until the Finals. The Crowder incident was unfortunate but frankly I was expecting somebody to punch that guy all series. Treating the guy like he is a troublesome child may not be the way to get the best performance out of him. $5 million is a very good price for somebody with JR's skills who fits this team as well as he does, why then get all nitpicky with the guaranteed amounts?

Follow JRs entire career. He needs reasons to stay engaged/focused and whatever team he is on needs protections IF he mentally checks out.

This teams goals and payroll are both to huge to *in a worse case scenario* be held hostage IF JR reverts back to some prior levels of commitment to team and basketball.

We got JR, the model citizen version, last year and he still found himself suspended during a pivotal playoff run.

This is the same guy that had his sister beat spectators up to get out his contract in China. While i applaud Smith's desire to play for the Cavs until he can show consistent play without mental lapses, we owe him squat. String a couple seasons together without any blow-ups and then we can talk.

So it appears that there aren't actually performance/incentive based requirements in his deal, but just a desire to control the situation next year, when they can cut him for only $2M if he decides to opt in.

Just to clarify, according to Pincus his deal becomes fully guaranteed for $5M on Monday. Also, according to him they had to structure it that way to be able to have the partial guarantee next year.

Couldn't JR just opt in then, and then get cut, and then sign another contract, essentially giving him a free 2 million? Although JR runs the risk of not getting cut if he was looking to get cut so he could sign for more.
