Couldn't JR just opt in then, and then get cut, and then sign another contract, essentially giving him a free 2 million? Although JR runs the risk of not getting cut if he was looking to get cut so he could sign for more.
He's essentially guaranteed himself at least $7M over the next two years if everything goes to shit. If he feels he can get more than $5M next year than he can opt out and get it, but I assume he would want assurance that that was actually the case as opposed to this year.
If he's a good citizen but doesn't have the assurances then I'm guessing he'll opt in and the cavs will let his deal become fully guaranteed.
So basically there are three outcomes next year: opt out for more money and a long term deal somewhere else, opt in and stay with the cavs for another year, or opt in but get waived and pursue a deal elsewhere (which will be hard to find if you self destruct here).
