Houston Deputy Murdered while pumping gas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What am I missing?

You're missing that it simply says 'black neighborhood.'

Where you are adding terms like 'poor', etc to the types of neighborhoods that you would be nervous walking around in. Personally, I'm with you on this. If I'm a hood ass area I'm looking over my shoulder for sure, and it just so happens that every area like that that I've been in is primarily black. But it isn't the fact that the people are BLACK that makes me nervous, nor do I believe that is what you meant either.

On the other hand, I've been harassed simply for being white while foot traveling through such areas too, so maybe race does definitely play a part.

Yep. That's why I'm saying there isn't a perfect answer here. When it comes to safety, sometimes you've just gotta go with your gut and not look back.

I know if I cross the street or look over my shoulder, my odds of being violently assaulted decrease. That's all I care about.

Well, there are white people who may resent well-off white college kids too. My overwhelming experience with people of different races, and even different socio-economic claases, even in very casual encounters, is that if you just treat them exactly the same as you'd treat someone white, they respond exactly the same.

If there's tension, it's usually because you're not seeing them the same, and that gets sensed.

Although a lot of southerners seem to have a Yankee detector that earns you the hairy eyeball more often than not....

True. But a girl I know around here got beat up in her driveway at 3:00 in the afternoon and had nothing taken, wasn't raped.

Just got the shit kicked out of her. Not sure what the motivation was there...

Well, yeah, so have I. You just kind of keep going....

But that's been pretty rare in my experience.

So is being shot and left for dead. :chuckle: But it happens. Best to just use caution no matter what, no matter how rare such situations are. If it means checking over my shoulder every 20 steps, so be it.

Last time I'm going to explain this...

You're missing that it simply says 'black neighborhood.'

Where you are adding terms like 'poor', etc to the types of neighborhoods that you would be nervous walking around in.

Exactly, thanks for explaining @Chris.

The question doesn't have anything to do with poor neighborhoods, sketchy individuals, or being out at night. You keep adding these terms, and then mention overlap. I'm giving you the benefit of doubt here; but I'm starting to wonder if you understand that most Blacks don't live in bad neighborhoods, aren't poor, and likely aren't "sketchy."

That's the other thing, black people can be racist too. And I'm sure there's a percentage who resent well-off white kids getting a college degree.

1) Who said Blacks can't be racist?

2) Why do you continue to make this assumption that Blacks are poor? Why add "well-off" to your predicate? It changes the dynamic from racist to something completely different.

No love for the Asian community up in here? They must always feel like a third wheel.

Oh, shit......what about those Indians from India?

Asians are dirty.

Indians are cheap.

End of story.

For sure.

Unlike @Damien O'Connel, who is probably the most racist person on the site, I will admit it.

I'm only racist towards Asians and Indians though. Everyone else is cool with me, regardless of neighborhood, socioeconomic status, etc.

How did racism even become a thing? Mysteries of life I tell ya.

My wife is Asian.. I speak several Asian languages including Japanese, Tagalog and Ilokano. I have nothing but love for Asia and Asian people.

Oh, shit......what about those Indians from India?

They cool too.. I have a few on staff.

Same reason why cavemen feared larger animals and why fish won't let you reach into the water and grab them, but they're fine with hanging around a bunch of other fish in their school. They instinctively don't trust individuals that aren't part of their tribe. It's a survival mechanism. If humans didn't have xenophobia hardwired into our brains, we probably wouldn't have made it past our first generation on Earth.

As to why it's still around today? Who cares?
