Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It could make some theoretical sense to have Delly start for either Mo or JR for the short term but I think Blatt would not do this because he would not want to wound Mo or JR's ego. Blatt knows Delly will do whatever he's asked to do and fill in as needed and not sulk. It would probably take us struggling defensively for a stretch of games for him to try moving Delly into the starting lineup.

1 thing is for certain Delly still has Rose's number. he played him great and made a few shots. only real black spot was when he forgot how to dribble and gave the ball to Rose

I bet Lue is personally coaching Delly to take opposing PGs mentally off their game- Lue was known as the Iverson stopper back in the day.

I know Delly has always played blanket defense- but I can't remember how intense he was in his 1st yr compared to his apex in last yr's playoffs.

At any rate- Lue & Delly= match made in heaven.

Delly has always been a pest on defense, even as a rookie his first year. I remember he caused lots of problems in a game I went to in 2013-2014 against the Wizards...Bradley Beal in particular struggles against Delly.

Two of his runners looked completely flat, got to get better arc on floaters. Other than that, I agree he played well. A few times the opponent drove on him and scored the help defense should have been there but it wasn't. That is on the bigs.

One underrated aspect of Delly's game is his recovery time on defense. He definitely gets beaten on picks, but, he is so fact at recovering that the opposing guard can't gain any ground. This recovery time allows Delly to mitigate his relative lack of athleticism on PnRs. I noticed it last year in the playoffs and it is really important. Guys like Mo don't do that.

We will get prime Delly value once Kyrie returns. 12-20 minutes per game of pure hustle and peskiness, above average spot up 3 shooting, and not having to be the primary ball handler

He also stays on his feet and is one of the few guards that uses the rule of verticality. That's why guys like Rose, who rely on jumping into guys and creating contact to draw calls, have trouble against him. Delly is never going to be great against shifty guys, but that's why we have Shumpert and Mozgov behind him.

Exactly! I don't think Delly is a good defender in traditional terms. Guys like Schroeder, Paul, Kyrie (obvious hypothetical), etc. that are fast -- and as you put it, shifty -- will always have an easier time against Delly. But the NBA is moving away from these types of point guards. Part of it is a lack of talent. But I feel comfortable with Delly guarding between 15-20 (maybe more?) starting point guards in the NBA.

And even Kyrie wanted to fight Delly when Delly first arrived and was guarding Kyrie in practice...LOL.

Delly is the sort of guy in any sport that you dread having to play him, and his mystique grows and you end up getting all stressed before the game. but once the game is over, he is the guy you want to have a beer with afterwards...at least that was my experience playing football

I feel like today may have been the most impressive Delly has ever looked. He's always been a very good ball mover, but I don't think I've seen him survey the floor and pass guys open like he was tonight. Specifically that cross court pass to RJ for the corner 3 off the pick and roll, I don't think he could make that pass consistently last year. He clearly worked on both his shot and finishing in the paint after last year. That quick floater off the glass looks like it could be effective in some situations, and he even showed off a left hand finish!
