Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Delly can play with both Mo and Kyrie, but not vice versa ( atleast against quality teams). The problem is both Shumpert and Smith needs minutes, and shump can only really play shooting guard. Those 2 guys are going to take up over 90% of the available minutes at shooting guard(possibly even more). If Kyrie is playing 30 MPG, which would be a pretty significant cut; then that still only leaves 18 minutes to split between 2 guys with very little minutes available at 2 guard for mop up minutes.

If 100% healthy, some good players will not play. Blatt will play situational players, but JR, Tristan, Mo, Delly, RJ, and Andy cant all see significant minutes every game. That would be a 11 man rotation.

Its a good problem to have though.

Oh stop it, Mr. Grumpy.

I'm just having some fun.

I'm listening to the Memphis announcers (including good old Brevin Knight) mentally undressing on NBA TV because of Delly doing Delly things and Andy doing Andy things. Not a grumpy bone in my body. I did think Memphis was the 4th or 5th best team in the NBA last season. Watching them crumble because two of my favorite Cavaliers of the past decade came off the bench to out-hustle them has me anything but grumpy.

Once Kyrie and Shump are back it's going to be tight for minutes for the reserves. I wouldn't mind seeing Blatt eat into JR's minutes and feed more to Delly. Delly can hit the 3 about as reliably as JR, just not as flashy about it. Delly would be more likely to keep the ball moving and JR really isn't much of an offensive threat outside of the 3 point shot so I'm not sure how much we'd lose shooting-wise.

What the hell are you talking about? JR had the most assists tonight. JR can drive, finish, and take players off the dribble.

I think he prefers the 3pt shot, but it's certainly not his only offensive threat.

Quote from Sean Tuohy, the co-analyst with Brevin Knight for Memphis and played by Tim McGraw in the movie "The Blind Side", after the slick assist to Jefferson for three:

You know Brevin, this Dellavedova couldn't get a cup of coffee with NBA GMs coming out of college.

Brevin Knight and Touhy then talked about how there can be enough minutes for the back court when Kyrie comes back for a good two minutes.

This happened in the Grizzlies home opener on a Memphis broadcast.

Well he takes a lot of high degree of difficulty 2 pointers. Stuff like 20 foot fall away jumpers. I don't see high value in that. yes he passes some but Delly facilitates more.

All I'm saying is that when Kyrie and Shump come back, someone is going to have to lose minutes, and to me the most sensible person, after the obvious choice of Cunningham, would be JR. Having Delly at 10 mins and JR at 25 to 30 to me would be a poor allocation of resources.

It silly to talk in absolutes.

Matchups, how guys are playing, what rotations are working, whether or not we're in a back to back or a stretch of 3 games in 4 nights, health, and so much more will keep things varied throughout the season.

Some games Delly will play 14 minutes, another game 22, another 12, another 18.

Once fully healthy, the only three that will almost always get bw 30-36 will be LeBron, Love, and Kyrie.

The culture that the team built and is continuing this year is that everyone behind those three are completely selfless and understand that there will be some variation. All the way down to guys who played last year like Jones and Harris, who know that there will be many games that they get DNP's.

Once we really get rolling, you will also see the occasional rest/maintenance off night for LeBron, Love, Kyrie, Moz, and Andy(not all on the same night of course). That will lead to occasional spikes in minutes and expanded roles for guys all the way down the roster.

These are luxury (tax) problems.

Also, on JR and the 3 pt shot. When were healthy last year, JR was able to pretty much just play sniper. He didn't do have to do much else. But when we were depleted in the playoffs, he and the staff saw the issue with that, in that he had forgotten how to create and drive in the offense. Against GS(too little too late) they had him start to play a more rounded offensive game. In the first two games this year, you can already see the extension of that. he will always be a gunslinger from deep, but he's making sure the other facets of his game are kept sharp, for the benefit of those around him and in the event injuries mount down the line.

Also, worth noting, from the very minute JR was traded here, he instantly became the first/best player on last years team on actually feeding Love and Moz in the post(which we just simply had not been doing much of at that time) For someone who gets and has earned the label of a chucker in the past, JR is a willing passer and a quite good one for a pure SG.

Sorry, really should have just posted this in the JR thread but it seemed like an extension of some of the conversation already going on in Delly's

I definitely would like to see more of him creating high percentage 2 point shots for himself, because this team is so powerful with 3 point shooting that you almost need to be able to bring a few more things to the table to justify playing time. Delly, Mo and Jefferson could all potentially approach or exceed 40% 3 point shooting this year.

In the first two games, I think JR has done that. In addition to keeping the ball moving, feeding the post, and playing good perimeter defense. He brings a lot to the team and should not be penalized for his rep as being a great 3 point shooter by being mistakenly categorized as one dimensional.

On top of that, he has a valuable skill that sometimes come in handy. While he and all the guys are excellent spot up 3p shooters and excellent with uncontested 3 point shooters, JR is one of the guys who IF the offense is bogged down or IF the 24 second clock is about to expire, can get off contested 3 point shot from just about anywhere on the floor and hit it at a rate better than most guys do in that situation.

As LeBron told the team earlier in the week, we have a full kit. We have everything we need. All the pieces necessary for any matchup are we could encounter are on this roster. They are all valuable and all necessary.

Just watched the the game. Wowee everyone looked good, but I started seeing the future where Delly was asking for a max next summer.(joking but he is going to make significantly more)

He plays so well with Lebron it is crazy. He has worked on exactly the things he should have. His first step looks surprisingly good. It seems like he has an athletic gear we didn't know about. He seems to have more plays around the basket. So far it just looks like he really addressed some big question marks like is an opportunity his only option. He legit dribble fast enough that he took the ball all the way to the hole on a steal!

The playmaking and IQs on this team are off the charts. Really impressed with Delly as a pg as well.

This team looks like it is going to run like Hell. If they keep this up they are all going to play in short bursts. Maybe not every game. I wouldn't mind older or banged up guys resting some games. Playing Delly 8 min can be fine. He will go balls to the wall.

I knew I should have listed to the frizz broadcast. I picked the cavs broadcast because you have that option on NBA broadband. Damn was I missing out.

Even if everyone is back and healthy, we should not have a problem finding minutes for people, not if Blatt does it right. Typically the Spurs have 12 to 13 guys who play 10+ MPG and 50+ games during the regular season, with every single player on the squad averaging less than 30 MPG. As I've said for a while around here, that is the way to do it. It should not be a problem going 11 deep during the regular season, in fact that is what you should want to do.

minutes will depend on individual matchups game to game and Kyries demands for time to get his stats up.
