2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I never was a fan. Just doesn't create well enough and his jumper is far too streaky to be his primary selling point. Biggest disappointment for me is his defense. Was initially somewhat hidden by high effort I think coming into the season, but his overall reaction ability has been slow. His closeouts are brutal lol.

Felt like a prick tearing down some of the early season top 10 guys lol, but there are others finally that I think are moving into the 5-10 range for me like Kevin Porter, Jarrett Culver, and DeAndre Hunter. I am really high on Culver.

Where are you on Shittu and McDaniels?

Where are you on Shittu and McDaniels?

Haven't watched McDaniels enough to have an opinion on him. I don't like Shittu compared to most either lol. What about you? I just think he's an average defender at best. Pretty much stuck at the 4 imo, and I don't really think he moves that great laterally, just average. The little bit I've watched of him I've seen a few instances of not giving a shit either.

He's a great rebounder on both ends, but I usually never seem to like bigs whose primary attribute is their handle. Have to either be a quality shooter are super versatile defender probably for me, and he's neither. I've seen a lot of people super high on him, and I don't really understand it that much tbh lol. The other guys I'm lower on like Bol, I can at least see the argument of having him ranked real high.

I've heard really good things about Jalen Smith from Maryland though as maybe the #4 big behind Bol/Jontay/Gafford. I've only watched him in the HS All Star events and stuff, but IIRC he's like a high-energy versatile defender. That type of player is usually more up my alley. PJ Washington too I'll end up having up pretty high on the bigs list I think by the end of the year.

I liked what I saw from McDaniels against Duke. He's one of those guys who has a lot of length on defense, and plays even bigger than he is because his hands are always in the right places. Really doesn't have many weaknesses as a prospect if he proves to be a reliable catch-and-shoot guy. Shittu I haven't seen much at all, just know that he's a trendy pick to sneak into the mid lottery.

A remarkable number of players, including Barrett, Bol, Little, Johnson, Grimes, McDaniels, Hoard, Porter, Culver, Langford, Hunter, and Shittu are for the moment between -1 and +1 on my draft rater, with only Zion and rapidly-declining Reddish still above the +1 mark. Of course I don't expect that to last, as most of these guys are moving quickly one direction or the other...but it makes it hard for me to rank them confidently at the moment, as I've seen one game at best for most of them.

Yeah, I've tried to avoid rankings guys this early. Last year I don't think I ranked anyone until the entire season was over lol. I think a lot of people are overly influenced by ESPN too and the DraftExpress guys. They've not updated their big board in a few weeks. I've honestly not even watched a ton of Duke. I'd rather get a better sense for the other prospects playing vs solid competition in tourney games vs Duke playing Army or Eastern Michigan. I do have to watch the Gonzaga/Duke game though for sure.

Normally I at least feel comfortable making a tier 1 and a tier 2, though, even early in the season. This year Zion's tier 1, but my early second tier has mostly crashed and burned and melded into the third tier to the point where there's no place to draw the line anymore. If the draft was tomorrow I'd pick Zion 1, Bol (with some hesitation) 2, and then I could go fifteen different ways after that.

I would take Zion at 1. But if Cavs slips to 2. I would with out a doubt select Rio Hachimura.
3. Bol Bol.

I don't agree, but this is kind of my point. Ask 15 people, and you could get 15 answers for who you'd draft after Zion.

Another interesting big that I forgot to mention is Mfiondu Kabengele on Florida State. He's crazy physically and has shown flashes of a jumper. Guy could become a defensive monster. Problem is that he's a victim of Leonard Hamilton's huge rotations and will probably be playing 20 mpg. Would take a big NCAA tourney for him to declare I'd think. Has an NBA future though I think for sure.

In case you happen to watch Auburn-Duke, another guy worth keeping an eye on is Chuma Okeke. It wasn't a good game for him, but he seems like an interesting positionless glue guy type that could thrive in the modern NBA.

Yeah I heard really good things about him from the Maui tournament. Sounds like he's easily overtaken Austin Wiley as their best prospect. Doubt I'll get around to watching them soon though lol... It's overwhelming early in the NCAA season because there's so many guys I want to watch that I haven't had the time to get to yet.

Slowly becoming a fan of Little. Not entirely sure why he's only averaging around 20 minutes per game for UNC considering he's probably their best overall player.

Good size, form on jumper is fine, near elite level athleticism. If we're in the 5-8 range I take him ALL day.

Updated my statistical rankings through yesterday's games. Added a lot of guys, dropped a couple others (Reid and Garland), and also brought back my breakdown into perimeter/interior/team components. I'm now pulling data from @JHoyNBA's database, so it's trivial for me to update this and add prospects people are interested in at any time.

What is boosting Cam so much on offense? Culver has superior offensive numbers (54% FG, 50% 3PT) but an almost identical OFF rating. Is it simply that Cam is one of the only high volume 3 point shooters at 40+%? FT%? A little of both?

Norvell's offensive ranking seems pretty funky to me too.....he's got really average shooting numbers on the year. Is his FT rate buoying him that much? AST rate? Both?

I'd imagine Zion not being able to hit 3's at even a below average rate are really dragging him down?

I'm more luke warm on Little after seeing him through a handful of games.

I think he's a worse version of Reddish, who has a bit more athleticism. He's been kind of clunky defending on the ball but has shown some nice help side potential as a wing. Little doesn't create for others and he's not hitting 3's at an acceptable rate for the number he is taking.

I think he still has an interesting ceiling but I'd struggle to take him in the top 5-6 right now. I just think there are other guys who have shown a better mix of production and potential. Lot of games to go though.

Cam's enormous three point rate (still higher than Trae Young last year) is the main thing keeping his offensive projection high. He's been dropping though, from +10 after 3 games, to +8 last week, to +4 now, so I imagine his days in the top 5 of my rankings are numbered.

Like Cam, Norvell is being buoyed by a high three point rate so far, and his tidy 2:1 assist:TO ratio helps him too. Not crazy to think he has point guard potential, and big PGs who can shoot are pretty rare.

As @priceFTW has pointed out, Zion doesn't stand out as a shooter or a facilitator, and great offensive players are usually one of those two things. Where he does stand out is as an interior scorer, but my draft rater struggles with elite interior scorers because it's hard to differentiate from a guy who's just an efficient lob target (low offensive ceiling) and a guy like Zion who's actually driving and scoring efficiently on his own (high offensive ceiling). That's reflected in the enormous uncertainty in Zion's rating (+/- 6.8).
