With the 49th pick in the 2014 RCF Mock Draft, the New York Jets select ...

moncrief-catch.jpg

Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss

The Jets lacked any kind of playmaker last year, and that's not a good way to try and develop a young quarterback. They signed Eric Decker, but they need another receiver to play on the opposite side, and Moncrief is a guy that I think can have a very successful career and possibly be one of the top performers at his position from this draft class.

STRENGTHS: Moncrief's thick frame, deceptive speed and smooth route-running make him a nightmare for cornerbacks. He does not possess the explosive moves of Southern Cal's Marqise Lee or Clemson's Sammy Watkins but might be a better player than either of them. He is sudden in his breaks, showing the ability to generate separation even against tight man coverage, and accelerates quickly, often leaving defenders in his dust on double-moves. Moncrief tracks the ball well and generally shows excellent hands (one drop vs. Texas), as well as the body control to make the dazzling grab. Moncrief is also cognizant in the running game, showing awareness and toughness as a downfield blocker

WEAKNESSES: Perhaps the only thing standing in Moncrief's way of becoming the first "skill-position" player from Mississippi to earn a first round draft selection since Eli Manning (No. 1 overall, 2004) is the question about his straight-line speed. Moncrief was not caught from behind on tapes viewed but the big-bodied receiver may not possess elite timed speed.

The Miami Dolphins and The Hill are on the clock.

Re: 2014 RCF Mock Draft: Philadelphia Eagles (howler1313)

GREAT pick for the Jets .I think Moncrief is a 1st round talent who is being overlooked due to the other WRs in this class.

Re: 2014 RCF Mock Draft: Philadelphia Eagles (howler1313)

Only white guys have deceptive speed your scouting report is utter bullshit

And I fucking love Moncrief, good pick, better value.

With the 50th pick in the 2014 RCF NFL Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select:

Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech

In order for Ryan Tannehill to take the next step as an NFL QB, the Dolphins need to get him a legitimate red zone target. Brian Hartline is a good posession receiver, and Mike Wallace provides a deep threat (albeit an overpaid one), but they do not have a receiver to target in the red zone.

Enter Jace Amaro.

At 6'5", 265 pounds, Amaro provides a big target for Tannehill. He had an outstanding season at Texas Tech in 2013 with 106 catches for an NCAA TE record 1,352 yards and seven TD. And according to Greg Cosell, Amaro is currently a better player than Eric Ebron (but not a better athlete).

Cosell said the delineation was important, implying that Ebron's ceiling is higher, but the opinion should still be viewed as a feather in Amaro's cap. "He's not quite the vertical receiver that Ebron is, but he's a very good player," Cosell said. The analyst compares Amaro to a smoother Jason Witten and believes he'll be an impact player right away. The blocking could use work, however. "Is he big enough to be a blocker on the line of scrimmage? Sure," Cosell said. "But he hasn't done that yet."

With Wallace taking the top off of the defense, a Hartline/Amaro duo working underneath will help improve Miami's passing game.

Re: 2014 RCF Mock Draft: Philadelphia Eagles (howler1313)

If Farmer moved up to 1 for Bortles, no one would be complaining....Roby was a top 10 pick going into last season, he could still be a pretty good CB in the NFL and I wouldn't complain if this was our actual 1st round. Good work RappSoda

I think a very big chunk of the fan base would complain about trading up for Bortles.

Yes, until he completely regressed and was at times a liability for big plays. Saying someone was a Top 10 pick before a season is hilarious. Tahj Boyd was a top 10 pick before the season too.

The Chicago Bears select

Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice

Gaines is one of my favorite corner back prospects in this draft. I think he'd look GREAT in Cleveland, but at this point, the Bears desperately need a corner to fit in their system, and Gaines is that guy. He's long, he's fast, and he's great at coverage. He's not overly physical nor is he a guy who will jump routes. He reminds me of a poor man's Joe Haden in a lot of ways.

PHILLIP GAINES, CB
SCHOOL: RICE | CONFERENCE: C-USA
COLLEGE EXPERIENCE: SENIOR | HOMETOWN: CONVERSE, TX
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-0 / 193 LBS.

PLAYER LOWDOWN

WORKOUT RESULTS
40 YD 20 YD 10 YD 225 BENCH VERTICAL JUMP BROAD SHUTTLE 3-CONE DRILL
- - - - - - - -
STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

STRENGTHS: Good-sized athlete and looks the part with a solid build and long arms. Natural burst, decisive strides and good straight-line speed. Fluid footwork and redirection skills to easily turn and stay hip-to-hip vertically. Strong plant foot to click-and-close in a flash with conviction. Won?t take unnecessary steps and mirrors well with proper body discipline. Patient, controlled feet. Physical in press with strong hands to initiate contact at the point of attack. Alert and rarely falls asleep at the wheel. Locates well and gets his hands on the ball ? only 32.5% of passes thrown his way in 2013 were completed. Good work ethic and a team-first guy with the right priorities, two-year team captain. Four-year starter (45 career starts) with experience in both man and zone coverage and holds the school record for career passes defended (42).
WEAKNESSES: High cut and will play too tall. Needs to continue and develop his instincts to better make plays on the ball. Will get caught with his back to the line of scrimmage and needs to show better route anticipation to jump passes. Will get his eyes caught in the backfield and whiff when trying to jam at the line of scrimmage. Not as physical as he looks and is unreliable in run support, throwing his shoulder and often taking poor angles in pursuit. Needs to get stronger to better wrap and finish. Inconsistent ballskills and hand/eye coordination, failing to complete too many would-be interceptions. Wasn?t asked to backpedal much in college. Will get caught with his arms extended down the field and needs to protect against holding or interference penalties. Some durability concerns from his past, missing the end of 2009 (broken wrist) and most of 2011 (left foot). Suspended for the 2013 season opener due to a violation of team rules.

--Dane Brugler

PLAYER OVERVIEW

A two-star recruit, Gaines committed to Rice out of high school over Mississippi State, Kansas State and North Texas. He became a starter as a true freshman in 2009 before a broken wrist ended his season. Gaines returned in 2010 as a sophomore and set a career-high in tackles (64), but he was again lost for the year in 2011 after a left foot injury ended his season, taking a medical redshirt. He stayed healthy the past two seasons, starting all 26 games and earning First Team All-CUSA honors both seasons. Gaines has the size, length and aggressive nature to match-up well against receivers at the line of scrimmage to press, showing the footwork and redirection skills to flip-and-stick down the field, but he is inexperienced in his backpedal. He isn?t as physical as he looks and needs to refine his tackling technique, but he competes with the ball in the air and holds the Rice record for career passes defended (42) ? just needs to come down with more interceptions. Gaines is patient and alert, but won?t take many chances and needs to continue to develop his instincts to stay on the field at the next level.

Nice! Was hoping you'd select him with how the draft was falling.

Re: 2014 RCF Mock Draft: Philadelphia Eagles (howler1313)

Pittsburgh isn't playing Lawrence at 3-4 DE, are they? Dude is kinda small to play 4-3 DE as it is, and from what I read in the pick description, he wants to put him at 3-4 DE?

More for depth at DE than actual starting, but I see your point. I wouldn't have taken Ebron in the first if I were in control there, and would've gone corner there.

Lawrence wouldn't add any depth to DE for the Steelers, he'd be an OLB in their system. His best fit is a 4-3 DE, don't know anyone who thinks he's going to be a down lineman in a 3-4.

That's interesting. I made the Ebron pick and the reason I did so was for Ben. I think he needs a safety valve that currently isn't on the roster to keep him from taking blow after blow. I'm not a fan, obviously, so you're more in-tune; however, I thought CBs weren't seen as a premium in Labeau's system. Am I wrong?

John Hughes wasn't a 3rd rounder until the Browns made it so and you were DEAD wrong about him. I'll admit that it should have been Clinton-Dix or Pryor at 26, but you literally have no idea how Roby or Bortles will play in the NFL.

And it's obvious that a large faction of the fans will complain because a large faction of the fans complain every time something happens with the Browns. The Browns could trade for Aaron Rodgers and a huge faction of the fan base would have something to bitch about. That is like a hallmark of this City's fans.

A very big chunk of the fan base is going to complain regardless of who they select at four, I'd imagine.

It's time the front office stopped caring about that and went out and got a guy who consistently produces for them at the QB position. If they do that, then the bitching will stop.

What are you comfortable with them giving up to move up and grab Bortles?

I'd rather use our # 26 and our second rounder to move up to get Bridgewater/Bortles if they drop into the teens as some mocks suggest.

Get one of the beasts with #4, then trade back up for Bortles/Bridgewater.
