2009/10 Preseason Game 8 - Cavaliers @ Celtics

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There's no pressure, it's the first game of the season. The 83rd game after the preseason is the first time a game really matters, assuming your record after the first 82 games is good enough to play in the 83rd game, which it will be in the case of the Cavs.

I dont like the Magic... like I really dont like them at all...

but I really f**king HATE the Celtics... man they pi$$ me off... smug bastards

then I enjoy laughing at the Wizards lol

Not worried at all. On the 27th, win or lose, we have the better team. Shaquille is a major piece when added to any team. So much that it will take more time than some of us to be comfortable with to get in tune with the team, but will pay dividends when it matters. I dont care what the coaches or Shaq himself will say, but the offense is going to change a lot with him on the floor. It's not just about him fitting in to what we did last year. It's like equipping a platoon with a Jesse Ventura style gattlin gun from Predator. It's big, it's clunky, it takes time to get used to it,but when you need it it is going to be there to mow shit down. I don't expect us to play well for a few weeks into the season and thats...ok. We saw where that got us last year. THis team is the shit and I can't wait to see this season go.

Missed the game but reading comments and Windhorst's recap the team is struggling with perimeter D. Considering how solid our defense was last year that could be a combo of missing the help defense of a guy like Ben Wallace and West's ability to guard athletic guards regardless to whether they were quick and/or good leapers. Since Ben is gone I think Mike Brown really start trying to get West back into the mix ASAP. Hard to do with his mental status being uncertain but this team looks like it will need West for sure.

I think this is a very good point. It is obvious that we still don't know what we have with Shaq. REmember the first few games of the regular season last year. Lebron wasn't sure where Mo was on offense, and what the team was about. It looked like he was struggling. I think this is our team now. They all have to learn how to play with Shaq. He isn't a role player like we are used to.

Boston Celtics blast Cleveland Cavs

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Cavaliers got their only real test of the preseason against one of their biggest rivals on Wednesday night. For the most part, they failed it.

The retest is next Tuesday, and fortunately for the Cavs, that's the one that will count.

The Boston Celtics didn't play several of their key players but still looked much further along and focused across the board in hammering the Cavs and their normal rotation, 96-82, in front of a sellout crowd at Value City Arena.

Even though the regular season begins Tuesday, Cavs coach Mike Brown says it might take a few more weeks for his team to find a rhythm.

CELTICS 96, CAVS 82

Preseason Game No. 8,at Value City Arena, Columbus

What Happened

The Celtics outplayed the Cavs completely in leading by double figures from start to finish despite resting some top players. LeBron James again struggled shooting the ball, and guard Mo Williams briefly got into a shoving match with Celtics forward Shelden Williams. The Cavs allowed 58 percent shooting through three quarters in their worst defensive performance of the preseason.

The star

Eddie House ripped the Cavs" slow-moving defense, repeatedly getting open for jumpers and hitting them to the tune of 21 points.

Highlight

In the first quarter Celtics guard Rajon Rondo tried some trickery by faking a behind the back pass and going for a layup but LeBron James caught him from behind and blocked his shot into the stands.

Lowlight

The Cavs allowed 50 percent shooting.

Shaq still learning the team's playbook: Cavs Insider
For various reasons the Cavs haven't been able to get as much out of the preseason as they wanted. Coach Mike Brown has even started routinely saying he thinks it'll be a few more weeks before there's any sort of rhythm. That rhetoric was verified with this one; the Cavs looked like they were a step slow and a second late all night.

"The way we lost the game was disappointing," Brown said. "I hoped we'd be further along but that's part of what this process is about. We're not going to be all together right now and if we try to get better in areas we're lacking we'll have a chance to be a pretty good team."

While the game was refreshingly intense for the preseason -- both sides were very physical and there was even a minor altercation -- the Cavs did not look like they are as ready for the real thing.

Boston sat normal starters Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett plus key reserve Glen Davis. Star Paul Pierce also only played the first half while the Cavs' front line played three quarters.

Regardless, the Cavs' major problem was on defense. Brown hasn't been thrilled with the team's defensive effort all month, though Tuesday night they played better against the Dallas Mavericks. This, however, was more than a setback; the Celtics were able to get whatever they wanted.

Boston shot 50 percent overall and was at 58 percent after three quarters, so they were having a hot night. But it was made somewhat easy by the dribble penetration the Cavs allowed over and over again, combined with general slow rotations. Not exactly the Cavs' way or what Brown wanted to see in a game with regular season intensity.

"We have to be more physical," Brown said. "The amount of direct drives tonight to me was horrific."

The Cavs coach called a few angry timeouts, including once after Mo Williams allowed opposite number Rajon Rondo a free drive to the basket because he was arguing a non-foul call at the other end. After a while, though, Brown just sat down and watched, perhaps just letting things unfold so he could build a better teaching tool with what turned out to be some ugly game film.

At one point during the third quarter the Celtics' lead stretched to 21 points with Williams, LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal on the floor.

Indeed there was injury and sickness, but after eight preseason games the Cavs were allowing opponents to shoot 46 percent. Which, of course, simply won't do when things get real.

"At the end of the day it's a preseason game and you don't want to look far into it," James said. "But we did want to play better and we have more than enough days to get better."

For the rest of the bad news, James had a second consecutive poor shooting night going just 6-of-15 on his way to 18 points. He shot 45 percent in six preseason games, which isn't bad, but was just 9-of-28 in the two games this week. Historically James usually plays his best at the end of the preseason.

O'Neal did play well, attacking Celtics' big men Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace with plenty of success. He scored 16 points in just 20 minutes and hinted at how he can attack the Celtics in the regular season. He ended up shooting 52 percent during the preseason.

Williams, meanwhile, was outplayed by Rondo as he had just one assist in 30 minutes. At the end of the first half he got into a shoving match with Celtics forward Shelden Williams. Shelden Williams pushed Mo Williams down as the buzzer sounded and Mo Williams got him and returned a shoulder blow. Both were hit with technical fouls.

The Celtics had five different players in double figures led by Eddie House, who was fastest on open jumpers permitted by drive and kicks, plus slow rotations. He scored 21 points and hit three of Boston's nine 3-pointers.

"It is a little bit of a setback," O'Neal said. "Next week it will be no excuses, it will be the real deal and we'll be ready."

I don't look too far into it, it was only pre-season, but we really, really, need to tighten up our perimeter defense and stop the dribble penetration. Dribble penetration has the ability to totally break down the best of defenses

Re: Boston Celtics blast Cleveland Cavs

It's preseason.

They wanted them to go hard body for a preason game. Nah.

We'll see Tuesday.

It could also be that it's a preseason game so everyone isn't really going 100 percent, and some are a little lead footed from training camp, and the preseason game from the night before.

I don't think you can really know anything about the team from watching preseason games. We have no idea what the players are supposed to be doing. The object of the preseason games aren't to win, they're to continue to grow as a team, so even if you lose all of the games by 40 points, if it's making you be the team you need to be win the season starts, so be it.

The only teams who take the preseason serious in terms of wins and losses are the scrub teams who are insecure and need the momentum so that their fans get excited and buy tickets for opening day.

I know it was only pre-season, but that sure was some pretty ugly play with some concerning events. Both offensively and defensively we looked very confused. Individually, LBJ, Mo and Moon all looked turrible. Moon's defense was probably my biggest unwanted surprise. Looks like a lot of work to do before next Tuesday...

I beg to differ. I'll take someone who shoots better than 40% from three on a team that has LeBron James and Shaquille O Neal in a heartbeat.

Okay; I agree with many of your posts most of the time, but you are not seriously trying to tell us you would take Boobie over Delonte, are you? Because if you are, give me some of that stash you are taking as it must be some damn good stuff. Boobie can't hold someone else's candle to Delonte, let alone hold his own. I agree that Boobie can help the team, but please stop trying to compare the two of them as Delonte brings sooooo much more to the winning of a title than Boobie does on his best days.

Guys are still trying to get completely over the flu bug...nothing to worry about. They have 5 days to rest up. We'll be ready for the 27th.

Seriously... Lol @ everyone panicking.

Especially about LeBron. I cannot believe everyone is expecting LeBron to take a bunch of shots and drive to the basket and get hacked in PRESEASON. I want him to be passing the ball to the new guys and helping them get acclimated to the offense and team... Not watching him get beat up while doing things we already knew he could do.

As of right now we are 0-0. All the seven games before this mean absolutely nothing now. It was basically just like having practice against another team. Plus, you don't show your opponent all your cards 5 days before you have to play them again. This preseason was all about getting the new guys to gel with the old guys while getting healthy for next Tuesday... You guys are better than that.

The thing that concerns me is that Moon kept getting raped off the bounce by Marquis. I was really disappointed in that, everyone keeps saying he’s a lockdown defender. Cats were toying with him from the wing AND the block.

This will make Rondo weep at night

Unfortunately, Mike Brown has 1 card - and it's a Go Fish reject.
