2012 Cavs Summer League

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I was going to stay up and watch this game last night. Luckily, I checked the box score first and saw that there was a total of 81 FTs. In a 40 minute, summer league game. That sounds totally unwatchable.

Waters did finally "pop" a little at the end of the game. Extremely frustrating to see him throwing the ball around the perimeter with Sloan. Caught a couple of glimpses however of what the CAVS saw. Hope we see more of that. Zeller looks like a 12-15 year starter in the association with possibilty of being a 20/10 guy. I think we can see after 2 games that drafting him 17 was a misdraft. If he is not a top 10 pick I dont know what one is. Guess the only reason he went low was he was a senior. Comparing him to Drummond is a joke.

I mean I just don't know what to tell you other than no amount of games in the summer league could ever tell you this.

He slipped to 17 because teams preferred to go with the younger, less experienced big prospects ... so the result is not unexpected. Tyler is more experienced, more refined, and he's delivering. Whether he can do the same against NBA competition is one big question and whether those other guys will ever surpass him is another.

Trade Dion already. I'd rather have Norris Coles! Everyone should know by now that summer league is where you make your mark in the NBA!

lol... Dwayne Wade only averaged 13 points on 39% shooting... yep he sure made his mark.

but i do hope that was sarcasm

I saw a bobcats fan start a thread on RealGM predicting playoffs because their team won their first summer league game. Now I see cavs fans ripping a player after two summer games. Both are overreactions. Does anyone remember that Coach Scott treats exhibition games as just another practice and runs them hard the day of games so they are already tired when the game starts. I know he's not the coach for the summer league, but I would expect the team to have a similar philosophy. If he's still shooting sub 40% in December, perhaps it will be time to be somewhat concerned.

When it comes to sports realgm is the arsehole of the internet.

You can probably have better discussions about sports on 4chan.

I think shooting percentage is an incredibly unimportant statistic in summer league. The sample size is way too small, and the flow of the game much too different, to draw any conclusions over what it would be like during the season. The real purpose is to see whether marginal players have the athleticism to make it, how hard they work, etc., so things like rebouncing and blocks might matter. Otherwise, the absence of any real plays or organized offense creates too artificial an environment to judge how they'd shoot during the season. And frankly, a team that can play a decent zone in the summer league is going to be able to shut down a lot of teams.

Until we see Waiters, Zeller, etc. playing with a real point guard, using plays designed to break a zone, and with real NBA defenders out there, we're really not going to know much about them.

Summer league is really for the scrubs.

I don't know if anyone has posted this but here are Dion Waiters highlights from the first summer league game against the Bobcats. The only clip that brought me some optimism was 1:45-1:52 he does look almost Dwade-eske attacking the basket.

He did a lot more of those Dwane Wade-esque splitting/sidestepping the defenders tonight in game 3. I see the D-Wade comparisons in D-Wait but he didn't finish as much as I would hope for. I'm not even going to talk about his jumpshot; I'm hoping he's in a rather nasty slump right now. Tonight certainly gave me some hope for the future. His skill level was clearly above the other gaurds on the court tonight, but that is to be expected with a #4 pick. If he can get that jumper to start falling he'll be opening some eyes.

Scott still treats regular season games like exhibition games too. I dont think the Cavs have yet to play a real game yet in Scotts eyes

Post-game interview, he does say that he is usually a pretty good shooter but is just in a bad slump. Also, that he tries to mimic Dwayne Wade and Deron Williams on how he attacks the basket.
