Re: Gov. Rick Perry: The Candidate Obama Would Fear the Most

Dont forget about the 400 lb elephant in the room - Chris Christie.

For the GOP to take back the White House, the VP choice is going to be very critical. Some combination of Christie, Perry, and Romney would have a shot.

:chuckles:

He said he's trying to lose weight. I love CC. He doesn't spend like a drunken sailor, he's honest and straight forward and he's out to get the job done and unafraid of what others think of him. He gives off somewhat of an isolationist standpoint that Max mentioned in an earlier thread that I think this country needs. I'd love to know how this would translate to foreign policy, given that I consider ours far too interventionist and a big distraction from the problems we currently face in our country.

Just a matter of time til CC's traded to a large market team for prospects though...

This is what makes me nervous about Perry. He's surrounding himself with a few of the d-bags that were a disaster under Bush. I read this quote the other day and wanted to put my head through my keyboard:

"He's a cowboy," said Michael Goldfarb, former senior staffer on John McCain's presidential campaign. "You have to assume he'd shoot first and ask questions later -- which would be nice after four years of a leading from behind, too little too late foreign policy."

Re: Gov. Rick Perry: The Candidate Obama Would Fear the Most

Tea Partiers (as perceived, if not true blue fiscal conservatives)

Michelle Bachman 28%
Ron Paul 27%
Herman Cain 8%
Rick Perry 4%

Total of 67%

vs.

Establishment

Tim Pawlenty 13%
Rick Santorum 9%
Mitt Romney 3%
Newt Gingrich 2%

Total of 27%

(These totals don’t add up to 100% because of rounding and candidates with less than 1% and the “scattering” figure.)

The warmongering, high-spending Republican establishment can eat my balls.

Distracted,

I don't even know what those percentages are intended to represent.

And Noonan...shoot-first, ask-questions later is the absolute last thing we need. IMO we need an accountant to run this country. Christie seems to think like an accountant, but has an alpha dog personality. I do think he probably needs to be a VP or run and build his publicity before he could get elected. But depending on his opinions on foreign policy, he's one of the few candidates in my lifetime that I could really get behind.

I think Marco Rubio here in FL will pick up steam around this time in 2015.

The numbers represent the Ames, Iowa Republican straw poll results that just occured yesterday.

Give a goddamn title or some frame of reference for what you're talking about when you throw percentages up.

Re: Gov. Rick Perry: The Candidate Obama Would Fear the Most

I didn't realize it was such a leap in logic to recognize the results of an event not 24 hours prior which has framed the national political discussion for the past week. It would be so hard to make that connection.

I mean I could have been listing each candidate's body-fat percentage or the results from a recent poll of stray dogs.

Re: Gov. Rick Perry: The Candidate Obama Would Fear the Most

The Iowa Straw Poll is there to weed GOP nominees out, doesn't really say anything beyond that though. It's going to demonstrate who can win the base. Pawlenty realized he had no shot in hell, and thus dropped out.

Romney's gonna have problems, unless the GOP establishment can swing things in his direction. I think the big thing it has shown though is that there's gonna be a big battle for the direction of the GOP, and you'd have to assume social conservative (Perry/Bachmann) camp will win it out - no signs point towards moderation in the modern day GOP.

I think you guys are also underestimating what a difference it is down here in Texas. Having moved from Ohio to Texas 3 years ago, you'd think you were in another country.

There are jobs here. People are pretty friendly and not so angry as they are in the north lately.

I'm not saying it's all Rick Perry, but given the alternative, I think he's doing a damn good job with the state right now.

Gallup: Obama job rating sinks below 40% for first time

By Michael A. Memoli

August 14, 2011, 10:31 a.m.
President Obama's summer woes have dragged his approval rating to an all-time low, sinking below 40% for the first time in Gallup's daily tracking poll.

New data posted Sunday shows that 39% of Americans approve of Obama's job performance, while 54% disapprove. Both are the worst numbers of his presidency.

Obama's approval rating has hovered in the 40% range for much of 2011, peaking at 53% in the weeks following the death of Osama bin Laden.

But Americans' view of his job performance continued to tick downward as the debt-ceiling debate heated up. By the time he signed legislation averting a federal default, he was mired in the low-40% range.

The polling setback comes as the Republican race to unseat him has kicked into overdrive. The past week has been dominated by the activity in Iowa ahead of the Ames Straw Poll, and the entrance of a new contender in Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The candidates have routinely assailed Obama's leadership in appealing to conservative activists who dominate this stage of the nominating contest.

Obama is set to launch something of a counter-offensive on Monday with a three-day bus tour of the Midwest, a trip that includes two stops in Iowa. The White House denied that the itinerary was politically motivated, however. :chuckles:

The three-day tracking poll was conducted from Aug. 11-13.

Re: Gov. Rick Perry: The Candidate Obama Would Fear the Most

Gallup is noteworthy as it's "registered voters". Wondering what Rasmusus poll will have to say as it's based on "most likely voters" who are registered. Only a minority of voters who are registered actually vote. Although, I'm thinking turnout in Nov 2012 will be high... not meaning to say young voters are who will be voting. I believe young voters are going to be totally turned off and tuned out at the end of next year. The negative campaigning is going to be at an all time high for this election. The GOP will not only state the differences, but also state the actual record of Obama. Obama doesn't have a good record to run on, so he will certainly be negative. How negative this will get depends on who the GOP nominee is.

As far as comedy potential goes, I could definitely get behind this guy being our next First Lady.

The idea of a Romney/Christie ticket is dangerous because Christie will appeal to Midwesterns. He won't carry his home state against Obama; that's not happening, forget it. But, he could potentially bring Pennsylvania further into play which is that game changer the GOP needs. If things keep going south a Romney/Christie ticket sounds pretty damn good to any truly independent voter.

..I'm not an independent voter, but just saying. ;)
